In the last part of my vacation I wandered around northeastern Austria. If you're already there it's of course a sin not to go to Vienna for at least one day (even if you've been there countless times). Well, then I went a bit along the Danube valley. Of course Melk, St. Pölten,... obligatory! Well then I also stopped in the town called Dürnstein. The town is interesting from a hiking point of view due to numerous opportunities for rambling around the surrounding hills. Even going to the castle ruins is about a 45-minute ascent. Well, I went a bit further to the hill Vogelberg. The surroundings here are dark, granitic - views of the Danube loop, hills, vineyards and the town of Dürnstein below are beautiful. It somewhat reminded me of the Rhineland around Koblenz. Even nicer views were from the path I took down (Vogelbergsteig). The path is officially closed and 'Verboten' due to falling rocks. Well I just went along it, of course with a helmet, as I assessed that the danger of falling rocks is no greater than on Triglav or Mangart, and the ban mainly applies because of the numerous tourists who don't come to Dürnstein with hiking gear. What real falling rocks are I experienced later on Hohe Wand a bit further south but about that in a separate post. The path down is a bit exposed in the upper part but equipped with cables.
