For mobile navigation, I recommend HereDrive. I think it's open source and available for various platforms. It worked well for me when my Garmin broke; apart from lacking some additional functions, it's fully comparable to it.

Yeah, yeah, Sicily has wild traffic, but if I'd stayed longer, I'd have gotten used to it and adapted. Rules don't apply, overtaking is culture.

Jeeps drive up to Torre del Philosopho. The ban sign is there. No one bothered me even in season during the day, although it was full of guides and jeeps. You go at your own risk. Piano Provenzano is on the other side. From the ban sign, continue on the path ahead instead of turning uphill from it.

The Aeolian Islands are still waiting for me!

I already opened a thread for Sicily, but the links there were to an old blog; I changed providers in the meantime, so I'm attaching the new links here (I deleted the old thread):

Some general info on Sicily, which I visited two years ago in September:

First day of hiking on Etna:

Ascent to Etna, actually due to weather conditions not quite to the top:

Thanks for explanations. Wonderful areas, especially Aeolian Islands.

Interesting report. Stromboli is really nice (I was with a guide though).
Very interesting also is the ascent to Vulcano, which anyone can do independently. On Vulcano you can see fumaroles up close - holes from which smoke billows. It smells of sulfur.

In 14 days we viewed the Aeolian Islands and circled Sicily. Currently, it is not possible to the top of Stromboli, nor to the top of Etna.
