Does it only seem to me that there are tons of forest mice along the paths this year, or wasn't I paying attention in previous years? This weekend I saw so many I stopped counting... cheers

Yes, apparently it's really a "mouse year" . I've been seeing them all spring, but mostly up to 1000m altitude. Higher up not anymore. They say consequently more snakes and reptiles , but I wouldn't know much about that. cheers and have fun.

maybe they don't have natural enemies (snakes, birds...), that's why they've multiplied so much, just thinking aloud....

They were scurrying on the forest floors when I went towards Veliki vrh on the climbing route (pl.Korošica), at home I saw 3 vipers in 1 week, yesterday I almost got one in a bucket to scare the folks at home a bit since they fear snakes so much hehehe

If there are lots of mice, then there obviously aren't many more snakes, if anything too few... All this is consequence of the winter that wasn't a proper one...

There are also lots of squirrels. At least it seems so to me.

This year there are lots of mice because last year was beech mast year. Beech has every 6 years a period when it produces large quantities of beechnuts. Beechnuts helped mice so they had something to eat over winter. So mortality was low.
Nice mouse greeting. And beware of mouse fever raging this year.

This week we had camp in Koča pod Bogatinom. In whole area around Komna there are tons of mice. And they are not shy at all, could eat right from hand. In hut at Triglav Lakes they supposedly caught 250 already this year. This one in pic is suspicious too... looks blind.

Don't snakes feed on mice too? Then it's logical that there are more snakes too.

What kind of logic is that? By my logic snakes are obviously lacking if too many mice.

predator populations always lag behind prey.

@bojann: There are usually fewer predators than prey. Mice are especially known to reproduce fast (much faster than snakes and other predators). Otherwise they'd be gone long ago, many predators feed on them (raptors, snakes, foxes, cats...). Otherwise, as lynx says: Predators follow prey. Where mice are, snakes will be too.

It's true, this year there are lots of mice, some even making weekend cottages in the hills. Photo from last week on path to Dobrča.
