I don't even know which year we decided on our first major trip to the mountains. I think it was a few years before 1972, when we went to Triglav, because then we already had a camera. In those times we went hiking completely unprepared. We had no fitness, no map or camera and the weather forecast wasn't good.
Very early in the morning we four set off from Tolmin. After an hour or two it started raining and we retreated to a hay barn by the path. When the rain stopped, we continued uphill. The path leads along the eastern slopes of Vodil and Mrzli vrh with views into the gorges of Tolminka and towards the village of Čadrg. When we reached the ridge, the view opened to the west, below us the Soča valley and further a completely dark sky over Italy. We walked along the ridge and when we saw how quickly the storm was approaching us, we ran as fast as we could and arrived at Planina Sleme just before the downpour. It rained as if the whole sky had burst. The downpour lasted quite a while and then suddenly stopped, because the storm moved further east across Yugoslavia. We set off again and arrived at Krn in the late afternoon.
There were many people on Krn that day. The morning storm completely cleared the atmosphere and gave us views of a lifetime. From Krn the best views are to the west, we saw everything from the Adriatic Sea to the Apennine hills, across the Po valley to the Alps in western Italy and then Switzerland, Austria and Slovenian Alps. Some mountaineer named the peaks and also mentioned Mont Blanc. If it's possible to see Mont Blanc from Krn, then we really saw it. The hut keeper was also beside herself, because she hadn't seen anything like that in her whole life. I don't remember anyone taking pictures, because back then people didn't have or carry cameras to the mountains. Then night fell and lights lit up before us. I was amazed how big Venice looked more than a hundred kilometers away. The atmosphere on Krn was unique, because we all knew we had experienced something incredible.
My main memory from the Triglav trip isn't even about the ascent but how shaken we were by the accident on the summit a week later. My second ascent of Triglav was 36 years later. My sisters' memory of the Krn trip is only racing ahead of the storm. I'm now the last one with memories of the incredible views from Krn where I'll return for the first time this month. Whoever was anywhere in the mountains in central Europe that day experienced unforgettable views. I'm wondering if there's anyone who remembers that day forty years ago.

It will be tough. If only there was at least the year. Good luck in searching for possible Krn visitors from back then.
