Hello hikers! I'm tempted to do this circular path alone tomorrow, on a workday, in the hills west of Kočevje: https://www.kocevsko.com/sl/aktivnosti/pohodnistvo/trimckova-pot/ First time in these parts, interested in bear encounter chances? Any comment on doing it solo on a workday, with fewer hikers and less forest noise? Better to do the full path later with someone? Path long, winter time, wouldn't like to miss it somewhere. Only pespoti.si map on phone. Currently well marked and fairly passable? At least crampons yes or no? Thanks for help and all the best on hiking paths in 2019!

I go often on weekdays to Mestni vrh and surrounding peaks. In the last 10 years met him once on Požgani hrib. Small encounter chance but you never know. Tracks seen several times. Ask if all paths are passable after the last storm. Luck.

Was today. Kočevje - Kalanova path - hut at Jelen's Spring - a bit back - viewpoint under Mestni vrh - Mestni vrh - descent other side to road at Fridrihštajn - Požgani hrib - south of Fridrihštajn return via Grajska path... whole path well marked... other season with gear some climbing on Fridrihštajn, Livoldski vrh and maybe Ledena jama and more... ran short on time due to late start, too much rest, excessive photos (especially from viewpoint tower) and mainly chatting with local hikers... latter useful especially first time... solo here not quite to dark finish... later spotted some night hikers from parking... one lady said bear den surely somewhere on Mestni vrh... maybe wolf too... got info that it's a bit harder, probably due to mentioned storm, from hut direct to Mestni vrh and also from hut past turnoff for Ledena jama to Požgani hrib...

Obviously Skala is a big fan of the hut at Jelen's Spring. We continued the course here this weekend, all first-timers. April weather continues. Some rope technique practice, some hiking to Mestni vrh and Fridrihštajn castle. Ascent on demanding climbing path and demo and practice of anchors, rappel, belay. All instructors tried very hard, grateful students too. Hut and surroundings exemplary maintained, caretakers tried hard, friendly, helpful, food very good. Paths newly marked, perhaps new visitor misses some direction sign. No bear encountered, good that way.

After a good experience at the hut at Jelenov Spring, we wanted to show it to our hikers too. Guide Marko prepared a hike suitable for all, moderate, via Kalan Path to the hut. A little refreshment, forest berry strudel super. Continuation to Mestni vrh, after heavy rain, on Saturday wonderful views towards Kočevje, Kočevski rog. We enjoyed the easy walk, conversation and companionship. Continued to Livoldski vrh. Followed by ascent to the ruins of Fridrihštajn castle, where 600 years ago the love story between Veronika Deseniška and Friderik Celjski took place. We returned via Castle Path. Total 14 km and 800 m elevation. In Kočevje we can't miss our colleague Olga, admirable how they renovated the former abandoned mayor's house, surroundings, what two exceptionally capable, hardworking ladies can do.

Fridrihštajn in a slightly different way. The film shows the reconstructed appearance of Fridrihštajn castle, as it might have looked 600 years ago, when it was still the proud fortress of the Counts of Celje. Today, only ruins of it remain, but its story lives on — in legends, memories and in the hearts of many who climb this 974-meter hill. Veronika Deseniška and Friderik II. Celjski. Forbidden love that marked Slovenian history and survived 600 years. Short film reveals their secret refuge at Fridrihštajn — and the story that still lives.
