From Kurja Valley through Kodrovo Grlo to Kalce

It's all Volk's fault!

About my excursions this year (© P. Plezalcek nasmeh) around Kurja Valley I've already written something, but some things of course remained unpublished. So last Friday I again fed my curiosity for the hidden corners of this little valley. A friendly chat with two hunters I met threw in a short description of the passage to Kalce. So the passage really exists! From other sources I learned there are apparently even three. And as I hiked further, I stumbled on a gully blocked by two rocks, the penultimate one on the right side of the valley, looking uphill. The phone saved the picture.

At home, together with a friend (who earns his bread as a professor), we looked in detail again at all available records, especially Volk's mentions about Kurja Valley, Kovačnica and the area around there. Hidden among the written was also a verbal key that with Uncle Google's help brought one single hit - a picture of the entrance to the gully blocked by two rocks. 12 years old, but almost completely identical to the one from my phone. Eureka! And then some pictures with details and ascetic short descriptions by the author of sparkling and humorous character. That's all this web giant had.

The decision fell instantly, the next day, Saturday (8th August), the Professor and I just went. Along the hunting path in Kurja Valley past the big rock where there used to be a stand, as the hunters kindly told me. A bit higher up we turned right to the gully and up it to the rock barrier. I bypassed it on ledges on the right, the Professor directly over a smaller boulder also on the right. We continued up the gully, then over a smooth step (II) almost to the end where the gully closes. We guessed to continue left up steep slabs (II) to the first trees above the gully, then about fifty meters horizontally left on grassy ledges to the forest.

The path or intuition led us further along the steep wooded ridge which at about 1200m is blocked by a cliff. Purely out of curiosity we traversed left under it, above the rocky last, terribly steep gully on the right side of Kurja Valley. I had visited its lower (entry) part once before. Maybe one of the remaining passages to Kalce is hidden right in it? We didn't see the bottom of the gully, but Kovačnica was like on a plate on the opposite wall. When we satisfied our curiosity, we returned about 150 meters back, where nice steps lead over the cliff. We continued up the wooded ridge, avoiding steeper areas mostly on the right side.

About 400 meters higher a new cliff awaited us and a bit left again a new comfortable passage. And then chamois trails under the next cliff. We continued left along them. During a short break - the Professor sat comfortably - we were guessing by following the trails if it's just trails or if human foot also contributed to the visibility of the path. While we gaped here and there, a pile of rocks collapsed under the sitting comrade and the dilemma about the path was irrevocably over! The convenient Professor's seat was in fact - a huge stonevelik nasmeh. Continuing we pushed a bit here and there through scree, among which extremely beautiful and untouched edelweiss grew. We missed the blood-red tarn we intended to visit. On Geopedija it's drawn about 250 meters too far north, so we didn't find it among the overgrown cirques.

Chamois trails, probably also a path, became increasingly traceable. We surrendered to them and the cirques whose valleys run roughly northwest. Without trouble we stepped on the marked transverse path at 1900m leading under Kalški Ridge. We continued on it for a while, then turned right and returned along the hunting path past the hut above Hlev to Žagana Peč. From there to the car waiting at the end of the forest road in Kurja Valley, the only stop was the pools of Bistrica, full of clean and cold water. To be honest we already missed it badly! Almost 1300m ascent, just as much descent and an exceptional experience of genuine, passionate and untouched wilderness was behind us. We met no one, no sound of a forestry motorbike disturbed the silence. The only chamois we met on the cirques seemed unusually strong, noble and sturdy to me.

The passage is extremely demanding orientation-wise, experience is essential, hard to do in fog. In the steep smooth slabs leading left from the gully and the exposed grassy traverse above them we used a rope just in case.

Beautiful and demanding trip, bravo! I think with all these posts the second wanderer slowly deserves the teacher's title for knowing this areamežikanje good luck!

J., although with a feeling of guilt it was nice to read this. velik nasmeh

Right, after such a trip life becomes at least for 'a day or two' unusually pleasantly dizzy.

Of course I'm glad that you and the Professor discovered 'all secrets' of the wild passage. Secrets... it's nice to share them, the reward of the experience everyone earns himself.
Congrats!

andi2, mežikanje.

Good luck.

Big thanks to all for kind words and opinions!

Andi2: Yes, I already went asking if they take me as teacher, they said be apprentice another 20 years, long queue aheadnasmeh...

Volk: No guilt feeling! Hope I didn't cause it with first sentence zadrega. Wrote it half joke, mainly meant as big thanks! And life after trip really like you wrote. Hope it stays like that for you and all long.

Mukica: Please no "You" formal to me. Well, maybe rethink in 20 years when maybe give me teacher title, then inform you, haha... Till then "you" informal fine...

This tour appealed to me right away so I went to check it up close. I also read the vivid description from the once serious forum and PZS forum member "spleza", I've done several of his mischievous off-trail descriptions..., so thanks back too.
One of the more interesting paths, so here are some pics..., the description above still holdsnasmeh
...I found that rocky obstacle without a problem, I'd almost say that the main orientation is solved up to here...1
...at the head of the gully a signpost figure was waiting for me, here you need to climb up smooth slabs to the higher level...2
...and along the ledge left, it looks like a small path.3
In between I went to check towards Kovačnica, in front a precipice, ...4
...in the middle of the forest a solitary signpost figure, already somewhat overgrown with moss.5
Here I turned left...6
...and past Rdeče lokve to the marked path amid the screes up there.7
...then turned downhill along the hunters' path, with nice views across and rekindling memories and wishes. Yes, a nice loop will be completed, this path is never boring even alone.8
View across the valley. Screes below Kompotelo and gully below Velbom, where another interesting path goes.9
View across ...This one tempts me too, Jermenci gully above Kovačnica and onwards to the meadows below Kompotelo.10

Yesterday (Wednesday, 27 October) from Kurje doline through Kodrovo grlo to Krvavo rdeče lokve, then also to Vrh Korena and Jermanov turn. Return along the transverse path under Kalški greben and down the hunting path.

I left the car at the turnoff to Kurja dolina, access to the entry into Kodrovo grlo I simplified a bit. Where the path turns towards the gully Veliki Krvavec, as last time, I went right on the overgrown cart track that soon turns into a path. Behind the big boulder (sometimes there was a hunting blind) right off-trail to the shallow, partly overgrown gully. Straight up it to the access to the short canyon, which is the key point of the passage. The big rock (barrier) at the start I bypassed on grassy ledges on the right, on the same side also the steep step higher up (otherwise II degree, thanks for the hint, Pastirica nasmeh).

From the canyon there are two options: one over smooth slabs more towards the end then somewhat exposed grassy traverse left or already at the start left up the steep, crumbly grassy-rocky and wet slope. This time I chose the latter. Up to a few meters below the top it went ok, the step left over small muddy and crumbly holds without serious grip gave me some thought. I put some hope in the little spruce growing up there, but it turned out the poor thing barely holds to the rock itself. When I spotted a solidly hammered PZS peg nearby that someone obviously urgently needed, I also talked to myself a bit. Well, that step turned out not particularly hard, but I sighed in relief when I grabbed the twisted tree trunk at the edge.

Further along the wooded ridge, over some fallen trees to the first rock barrier. Over it lead nice and easy steps made of high-quality Slovenian limestone. I was glad for them, as they dispelled some bad feeling from the crumbly wall and I would have gladly climbed them twice.

Here and there I thought I saw a path that soon disappeared. Near the second rock barrier I stumbled on a twisted tree with carved "K", whatever that means (Koder, Kamniška Bistrica, Kalška gora, Kalce, Krvavo rdeča lokev, Krvavec...). For the mark I made a short excursion (© Palček Plezalček) into dense thicket, but soon returned. At the characteristic rock a bit before the passage over the barrier, the path (probably just animal trail to drink at the lokva, I thought) lured me left into the thicket. Well traceable it continued through valleys between dolci, at the top of the ridge over a nice rocky passage, tunnel covered with thicket. After another small excursion (© same author velik nasmeh) left, I descended on the right side into the grassy valley a few dozen meters from Krvavo rdeče lokve. The little lake was frozen, but warm sun without a breath of wind invited to rest. It was very pleasant and solitary, no flies or mosquitoes at this time of course.

At the lokva and higher, some hoarfrost clung to shaded rock sides, grass also slightly frozen. But I had time and weather was beautiful. So I went to Vrh Korena, on the way back also to Jermanov turn. I returned over Škrbina same way, then down the hunting path past the hut. In the forest above the hut and for a while lower down the path is quite covered with leaves that required caution.

I'll remember this beautiful day well! "After such a tour life becomes unusually pleasantly dizzy for at least a day or two" Volk would say, who of course is guilty again this time mežikanje. But the effect these days reaches only me, I add. The Professor who was last time with me around here is currently wandering paella country. Good for him.

When I first went over that steep-overgrown-crumbly wall, adrenaline rose in me too, mainly because I wanted to go too directly upwards. Second time was easier.
The peg was probably hammered on descent.
Anyway the passage through Kodrovo grlo, one or the other variant, is very demanding.
All congratulations!

Thanks, Pastirica. It's really as you say. Only about the peg, hmm... If I were descending, I'd put the rope around the tree that's only about five meters higher up and wouldn't hammer a peg. Anyway, who knows what happened. It's there anyway, near the most annoying spot for me. Maybe useful to someone.
