Goriški rob

I'm going on the tour in the afternoon completely on purpose, since only then does the sun shine into that corner where I was headed. From Skala the road to Dol pod Plazmi is already quite bare, from there onwards to Ravni Dol there's still plenty of snow, of course only possible with skis. The flanks above Ravni Dol are smooth this year like a baby's bottom. Cold night and cold day did their bit and the snow froze well, plus yesterday evening a snow shower added a few cm of snow that stayed dry and provided enjoyable skiing. I skied from Goriški Ridge to Ravni Dol, then there was some pushing on the road and with a few intermediate ski removals all the way to the car. Nice tour, but I must warn that this is bear area, last year at least two were hanging around there :-)).

Locals call this end Plazjanske Loupe.

I apologize since I'm not a local, but still I'd teach the local that I know very well where Plazjanske Lope are, namely above Dol nad Plazmi, which is not above Ravni Dol where I was and unfortunately I haven't met any local up there yet. By the way, Ravni Dol was also once called Ravna dolina and Plazjanski Vršac locals used to call Plaski Vršacnasmeh.

Igor was really in the valley above Ravni Dol below Veliki Špič, if I'm not mistaken. Otherwise a small correction, instead of Dol nad Plazmi it should be Dol pod Plazmi according to the 1:20000 map, Julijske Alpe 1983. According to the map the area by the first hunting hut is called Polog, then Dol pod Plazmi, in the flattening of the basin with the source of Suhi Potok it's called Zajezero, a bit higher where the road disappears it's Ravni Dol with a ponor source at 1540m below Plezjanski Vršič.

Hello!
A nice discussion has ignited, which is good. Every info is useful. "viharnik" has already correctly identified the names. Regarding names, I advocate (local rule) names used by locals. Anyway, this Zlodejeva tour is in "Slovenija Turnosmučarski vodnik" by Igor Jenčič (Sidarta 1998), described even more in detail. More info for those unfamiliar with the terrain there under the walls of Veliki Špič. Tour description under name Plaski Vršac page 141 of this guide. Description: starting point, ascent, descent, best period, difficulties, tour length and map. Partially demanding. The mentioned guide is, I'd say, the "bible of ski touring". No hard feelings!
Best regards and happy in the mountains, Swiss!

I won't get into the debate about names (exceptionally this time zadreganasmeh), but I like that Igor gave this article the title Goriški Ridge. Sounds and (over)reads great!
Bravo Igor! mežikanje

Since same starting point, same direction I added it here so it stays together. It was another afternoon one, also fully intentional, but our intentions didn't fully materialize. Through Krbuljnik the road is mostly bare, followed by move to Dol pod Plazmi. Through the forest it's bare and you have to carry skis for about 10 minutes, from there we go straight up to Plazjanske Lope, where the scree fields are nicely smoothly snow-covered and appropriately hard given the temperatures of recent days. The sun barely peeked from behind Kuk and Labrja, but it warmed pleasantly. The ascent was pure pleasure, skins and crampons gripped well, Rafkot was in a hurry somewhere and had quite an advantage when we arrived under the wall. Since we expected the sun to at least slightly soften the snow, we sat under the wall for almost an hour enjoying great views and the play of shadows of the slowly setting sun. We started skiing at 17:15, but the snow didn't soften at all, on the contrary, where it had softened on ascent it was freezing back now. Nevertheless we enjoyed immensely, although it rumbled occasionally a bit. The Lope follow one another and the lower we were the better the descent. Definitely need to return to this beautiful corner. Haven't seen a bear yet :-)).

Igor is certainly one of the best experts of Julijske Alpe, but I note that he still doesn't know where Plezjanske Loupe are. They are exactly where Raubšic wrote, the place where he was on the second tour are Loupe. I'd also correct viharnik a bit, the place where a lake forms during heavy rain that sinks in 2-3 days is not Zajezero but Jezera while Polog is not along the path to Plaze through Krbuljnik, but along the path from Skala to Plaze, either on the path that turns right uphill a bit before the ramp or on the forest road. But I'd advise against the tour that Igor did under Loupe in March and April under normal snow conditions in the afternoon, as frequent spontaneous avalanche releases occur, especially problematic are Loupe because they have no pronounced gullies through which avalanches go. Best regards

One thing is the map made by highly educated cartographers from Ljubljana, another are the names used by simple locals on the ground. An acquaintance from Soča knows Plazijanske and Trebiške Lope, hasn't heard of Goriški Ridge, Veliko Špičje doesn't sound very local to him either. But obviously what the cartographers drew counts and probably in time only the "official" names will prevail completely.

In my post I just wrote how we locals call these places and no map can change that. I heard this from people who actually knew every stone there when they herded sheep and sometimes stole something. Among other things even Lepo Špičje were always just Ščanevce for locals. What is more correct, the name used by locals or a name someone made up when passing by is another story. In no way is it my intention to polemicize with anyone, just to add some info that most probably don't know. Best regards

Actually I'm also interested in how they named things back then, less in what someone heard. It surprises me that the locals allowed such naming and didn't oppose it back then. I look at and use existing maps, never intended to mislead anyone, moreover I'm one of the few who signs with name and doesn't hide like most on this forum, and I can read too and Goriški rob is written on the map Julijske Alpe-western part, PZS Publishing, cat. no.209, year 2001, and today I was up there too, and it was really greatnasmeh.

Hello!
Bravo Igor. That's what I expected. The right answer
to the polemic that unfolded unnecessarily. Otherwise take advantage of a couple more days of really exceptional conditions for ski touring. Especially in those areas.
LP and happy in the mountains!

Yesterday afternoon I headed again to Goriški rob to ski down that beautiful flank ending in Ravni dol once more. Description at: www.turni-klub-gora.si under Current conditions, but here I'd add a very useful link to Primorske stene website (http://primorskestene.com/), which my friend, established alpinist and now editor Peter Podgornik has been editing for some years with great effort and passion, with whom I occasionally collaborate on editing the site. Goriški rob is mentioned here too: http://www.primorskestene.com/zgornja-soska-dolina/skupina-spicje/zadnaj-lopa-malo-spicje-in-goriski-rob-sz-stran, describing Špičja group. Primorske stene website not only for alpinists, ordinary hikers and mountaineers can find many interesting and useful info there too. A few more pics.

Yeah I stumbled on that website purely by chance last time, and it's pretty goodnasmeh. You get quite some info about mountains in that area. I was mainly interested in Kanin area with all surrounding hills.
