Gornja Kopica (Kopice) 2202 m

Yesterday's day was again one to shout about. With all due respect, I intend to visit the mentioned mountain. I tried already two years ago, but after the scree above Brinova glava I was "too fast", so I accidentally stepped on almost two hundred meters higher peak - the last in the Kopice ridge, which unfortunately is not named anywhere. As said, the approach is much lower. From the scree where there's also trace of pathlet, turn right at 2050m height. Initially I mentioned respect because unnamed author on internet mentions high difficulty of approach, which is far from that. Let me mention that so far I visited more than 90% of our pathless two-thousanders, and only about 30 were even easier than this. If the route is known to you and "you know where you're going", then it's a small joke. Since exploration didn't take long, I ascended also nearby Dovški križ, whose approach was snow-free and enjoyed incredible July sun on it (last 8 pics from there). Complete opposite was Oltar as approach direction is slightly turned east, so there was still quite some snow from Grlo up. Two hikers needed at least an hour and a half for descent to here. I descended past bivouac and nailed exceptionally nice tour.

Nice ridge, unfairly neglected in the shadow of the big ones in Martuljek! From Brinova glava to Dovški križ really no major difficulties, except one abseil from the horned tower towards the end.
Congratulations!

That's right, as you note, Drago. If the ridge were moved to some other environment, it would be much more recognizable, but as it is, few know about it, and it doesn't even have clearly defined peaks. Roughly there are three; The one just described is the lower (southern), the middle one is probably a bit harder to access (photo 5), the upper one (which I mistakenly climbed the year before last), practically leans on Dovški križ, approach from south doesn't exceed II. grade, it's supposed to be called Vrh Vrha kopic, height just under 2400m.

Yesterday, on a beautiful and warm day, not at all like early November, we were on Srednja Kopica. No living soul anywhere, not even human traces, wilderness is complete.
From the scree to the ridge zig-zag through very crumbly and loaded terrain.

Naming of our (high) mountains is not yet fully settled, among them also the northeastern ridge of Kopic between the karst sinks Med plazmi and Na brinju. Three peaks stand out in the ridge. Unfortunately, only the lower peak at 2202m is marked on maps with the name Kopica, Kopice, on older maps even Gornja Kopica. With this name, a mountain at 2300m is marked on rare maps. The last peak, leaning on the southern slope of Dovški križ, has no name at all, on specials only the contour 2399m is marked. I suggest we finally simplify things. Despite these mountains being very poorly visited and in the shadow of giants, they deserve their names. Lower, Middle and Upper Kopica.
To the yesterday's tour.
Just before the 10km sign I turn off the asphalt directly up the hill. After good ten minutes by the cairn slightly right from the path to the small ridge, and along the well traceable pathlet to Brinova glava. The forecast with stronger wind started fulfilling, which disturbed me higher up a lot, I even changed the tour plan because of it. In Brinja screes the pathlet gets lost slightly a few times, but doesn't disturb orientation. A bit below 2200 I turn off it into the steep scree under the foot of Gornja Kopica. With a bit of sense the slope nowhere reaches II. The most demanding is the descent from the summit to the saddle, as steep towers block the ridge path, which can be bypassed on the right side, the final jump is only about 5m, but can be nicely climbed out. To Dovški križ only another 160m up. I don't stay long there, as individual wind gusts are really strong, as said, because of that I skipped the crossing to Kukova špica. But it was quite bearable on Šplevta, where I could even dry my shirts. Mandatory visit to the bivouac, where I meet the only three hikers today. Descent through scree express, I refill water, as the lower part of the path was very hot again. At three I quench thirst at Dani's with two beersnasmeh, which I had well with the parking in Vrata.velik nasmeh

The name Spodnja Kopica is in the PDF Grebenov slovenskih gorah by author Prlet, who quotes Mihelic, who quotes the map ... reserved for the grassy knoll ca 1900m.

I don't follow possible name combinations for the following peaks. Others have already given their names, see e.g. Marjana's and Markot's record, but if every few 10 years a new set of names for some knolls appears, in the end it's just confusion. nasmeh Especially if the same name is assigned to different peaks, which in my opinion - at least in theory - can be a dangerous trap for someone.

In my description I follow the "official" naming - thus Kopice (2.202 m) and Gornja kopica (2.305 m) - done on 13.7.2024. Along the usual path to Dovški križ (and the rest nearby) across Brinja in the scree under the slopes of Kopice (Na brinju), I turn right onto a wide grassy passage and behind it turn slightly left and then slightly right through scree. I bypass the small rock step (in which a small cavity) to the left through a short gully/chute and then easily traverse right to the small grassy saddle between Kopice and Gornja kopica. From the saddle right to the ridge and left to the summit of Kopice. I descend back to the saddle and towards Gornja kopica, first on the grassy slope and then right traverse across a narrow passage with shrubs and immediately behind it left to shrubs above which a smooth wall. The key part follows - instead of vertically into the chimney right next to the mentioned smooth wall (III. grade - here I did climb it when going up), it is better and much easier to step right around the prominent rock flake (the step is narrow, exposed, crumbly - so carefully), after which a much easier grassy passage upwards opens (this variant - II. grade) to the ridge. Then along the ridge left to the forepeak of Gornja kopica. Descent to the saddle between forepeak and summit of Gornja kopica slightly right downwards through a narrow jammed chute (II. grade). Continuation much easier through scree, only before the summit a short rock step (II. grade). Return along the same path to the grassy saddle between Kopice and Gornja kopica and to the scree Na brinju. I add photos with drawn path for easier orientation.

After spending a long night in the bivouac, I head to Šplevta just as the sun rises. Then I go to the Kopice ridge. To the ridge it goes nicely, as the predecessor describes. One traverses the scree and follows a pathlet across the grassy shoulder, then a slight descent and traverse into a wide gully, where one follows the most logical direction towards the saddle. Let us not be misled by the well-visible ramp in the middle part, because behind it is a small step; if we go directly up, it is only scree. From the saddle onwards black clouds already threaten me and I do not find a good passage and go along a fallen ledge to grassy slopes and up the ridge. On the summit I get a few raindrops and quickly descend and do not go towards Gornja Kopica at all, but soon regret it as it clears up. I want to go back already, but a strong gust of wind dissuades me from the thought and the risk, and clouds gather again. Pity, because it does not look difficult on the predecessor's pictures. Over Brinje I lose the path again, ascend also to Brinova glava and into the valley, where I wander a bit more because I have a good connection only in the afternoon; this time it went smoothly with public transport and transfers.
