Grmada and neighbouring hills

Grmada (Monte Ermada) is a 323 m high hill on the Triestine Karst. Its slopes rise to the south between Devin and Sesljan, to the north they extend into the Brestovica valley. Due to its strategic location it was very important during WWI, as the Austro-Hungarian defensive line ran over it.

There are several paths to Grmada. On the Italian side between Medja village (Medeazza), Devin and villages above Sesljan there is a network of intertwining paths. From Brestovica near Komen there is a circular path Hike along the traces of the Soča front in Brestovica.

On Sunday, 16.11.2014, I initially planned to go to Cerje. Due to clouds gathering over the Gorizia Karst, I continued driving straight to the sea. At the TIC in Sesljan I equipped myself with a tourist map and headed towards Grmada. I started hiking at the end of Cerovlje village (Ceroglie) and easily ascended to Grmada via path no. 8. At the top views are greatly impaired due to vegetation and although the sea is very close, it's hardly visible through the tree branches. From the top I continued briefly on path no. 3, then turned towards Grofova cave and followed the signs for Hike along the traces of the Soča front in Brestovica. The trail took me to the rocky hillock Jastreb, then in a steeper descent through the forest to a wider cart track, where I turned right towards Cerovlje (left Medja vas). After crossing the border I turned from the cart track onto path no. 3 and headed to Ostri vrh, which the path bypasses, so I climbed to the top via paths through the bushes. From Ostri vrh I went straight down the stony slope and then through some bushes just before the border to the cart track that brought me back to Cerovlje.

For exploring the paths with photo stops I spent a good 3 hours, pure walking maybe an hour less. That's for the first try, longer exploration to come. To conclude, a short walk along Rilke's path and enjoyment of the glowing colors of the sunset and an unexpectedly beautiful, rain-stolen day lay behind me.

Damjan, thanks. Planned walk before lunch unexpectedly developed into a beautiful day by the sea. I'm lucky that the sea is not far and I can surrender to inspiration.

On Saturday, 22.11.2014, I continued exploring paths around Grmada. This time I started hiking at the adrenaline park below Cerovlje village. Along the road closed to traffic, I headed to the abandoned hamlet Kohišče. On the tourist map I got last time, the path is marked ST (trenches footpath), to Kohišče there are no marks. The road is first asphalted, last part macadam. From Kohišče I went further down the descending road, then turned left onto a wider cart track. From the cart track I went across a larger meadow with a hunting stand and further through the forest to the top of the hillock, where there is another stand on a pine. With better visibility there is a nice view to Sesljanski bay and Devin, this time fog over the sea and views not great. From the hillock through karst scrub back to Kohišče, where locals directed me to the trenches path, reached via cart track between houses. Marked path 3a, which comes from the road from Medja vas, goes on the cart track behind the houses.

Further, the trenches path is initially well cleared and marked and interesting for karst lovers and those interested in WWI. The path is well followable to the pipeline trace where path 3 arrives. To continue the trenches path, cross the trace and then continue on the trail. Unfortunately, the path further is very overgrown, the trail barely followable and lost in thorn bushes. Somehow I pushed through the bushes to path 3. Better to go right on the pipeline trace (path slightly descends) to the junction, where path 3a joins from the right, and then left on path 3 to Grmada.
From Grmada I descended on the cart track, which is concreted in the upper part. Path marked 8 on the map and soon below the summit turns to Cerovlje. I went this last time, so today I continued on the cart track. At Gradišče na Vrtači (some collapsed wall by the path) path 8 joins. Left to Cerovlje, I went right and then shortcut on narrower cart track to the road and adrenaline park.

Not a very warm day, the sun barely breaking through hazy clouds, I finished at the water fountain at the end of Sesljan or at the Sv. Mavra settlement. After a cloudy day the sunset was really magnificent.
