Hike in the footsteps of Valentin Stanič

Yesterday the hike on the paths of Valentin Stanič took place. Start in Solkan then to Sabotin, along the ridge to Vrhovlje, from there to the top of Korada then just descent to Kanal ob Soči. The trail is along extremely scenic paths, so along the path the Julian Alps accompany you all the time on one side, Friuli on the other and views all the way to the sea. Length 25km

Today there was a hike along Valentin Stanič's path, which many hikers joined. Our group started walking at 7:15. From Solkan over Sabotin to Vrhovlje. From there to Korada. From Korada to Kanal, where the tour ended. Quite long. It came to 25 km. Then by bus from Kanal to Solkan at the starting point. First time I joined this hike. Weather was favorable to us. Hikers came from all over Slovenia.

I didn't know that the ridge was so long.

We stop for a short break at the hut on Sabotin.

And we say goodbye at the starting point in Solkan. It was a long but nice tour.

7.5.2022. Although the weather wasn't exactly nice, yesterday's hike on Stanič's paths was interesting. Quite a few of us walked the entire path from Solkan to Sabotin. And through the hill to Vrhovlje. Then along the road, paths to Korada. And descent to Kanal. There the bus transport to the starting point was waiting for us.

It's quite long, once I went the whole path though. Otherwise we from PD only walked to Vrhovlje. And almost always had rain. nasmeh

Nice Darinka and company,
we this year due to force majeure didn't go on the hike, otherwise present more than 10x and that along the whole trail, in that is the charm, in rain, bora, sun .....

Majda the trail isn't hard. Except the initial ascent to Sabotin no steep parts. It's more walking on flat. In such weather it's easier to walk. Although the path was slippery on descent. Be more careful. But it's long. No hike for two years. Next year better weather nasmeh

Regular buses and trains also run. Just check when they depart.

Memorial hike 25.03.2023. In honor of Valentin Stanič, priest, educator, humanist and pioneer of alpinism in Europe. We started walking a bit after six in the morning. This year two borderlanders joined our three. That forecasted rain until ten in the morning didn't come. Nor the sun. When we continued from Vrhovlje along the road, thunder started and rain. With hail. We walked in rain all the way to the hut on Korada. Then it cleared and from Korada snowy Julijci were visible. Eight hours of walking and just under 25 km.

6.4.2024. Above all fields, above all valleys silver fog glistens. Here I am like an eagle above the blues near the sky. (Srečko Kosovel.) This year participation was numerous 500 hikers gathered. Day without rain and thunder.

In the mountaineering association Valentin Stanič Kanal we successfully organized this year the jubilee 30th traditional hike In the footsteps of Valentin Stanič.
On this 25 kilometers long hike, where hikers overcome 1200 meters of elevation and it runs from Solkan to Sabotin and along the ridge above the Soča river to Vrhovlje, then up to Korada, followed by descent to Kanal, hikers can really enjoy beautiful views from the Adriatic Sea, Dolomites, Carnic and Julian Alps.
Uncertain weather forecast deterred many from participating, but still almost 300 hikers from all over Slovenia and also Italy joined.

At Vrhovlje the youth section of PD Valentin Stanič Kanal joined us. Disabled mountaineers from the inPlaninec committee were with us too. Some started the trail already in Solkan, some at Vrhovlje. Congratulations for perseverance, both to the youth and inPlaninci.

The day passed without raindrops and despite cloudiness it offered beautiful views. The cheerful mountaineering group finished the hike at Kontrada square, where the closing event also took place, organized by OŠ Kanal and OŠ Deskle.
At the closing event, nice words and congratulations for the excellent organization were expressed by hike participants and also by the deputy mayor of the municipality Kanal ob Soči Mrs. Barbara Fejdiga Perše.
At this point thanks also to all event sponsors and GRS Tolmin, which ensured the safety of participants.

Hike along the paths of Valentin Stanič. (28.03.2026) The three of us hiked the entire trail from Solkan to Sabotin. Continued to Vrhovlje and to the hut on Korada. Then descent to Kanal. Along the way, we decided to visit the chapel of St. James. We've gone down there by the road several times. The path is nicely traceable. The weather was nice. Windy on the ridge from Sabotin onwards. A lot of us gathered. Even familiar faces. The trail distance was 25 km. Some elevation gain accumulated. 1279.

In the Alpine Association Valentin Stanič Kanal ob Soči, we successfully held the traditional commemorative hike in honor of our fellow countryman Valentin Stanič, after whom our association is named, last Saturday in March.

Despite the storms that affected many parts of Slovenia in the past week, the paths in our area were passable and safe. The weather was also favorable to us, as the hike took place in beautiful and stable conditions.

We started the hike in the early morning hours in Solkan, where a good number of hikers from various parts of Slovenia, including from neighboring Italy, gathered. The hike route follows the paths along which Valentin Stanič walked. From Solkan, it leads past the remains of the chapel of St. Valentin, across Sabotin to Goriška Brda to Vrhovlje pri Kojskem, then ascends to Korada (812 m), the highest point of the hike. The path continues past the chapel of St. Genderca and ends in Kanal ob Soči.

The entire route measures over 25 kilometers, during which hikers cover more than 1100 meters of elevation gain. Participants are offered two shorter versions of the hike – the southern and northern half of the route.

The hike took place in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. Participants enjoyed the beautiful views and socializing, especially at the top of Korada. The conclusion of the hike, where refreshments were provided, was held at Kontrada square in Kanal ob Soči, in the immediate vicinity of the famous bridge over the Soča River, not far from Bodrež, the birthplace of Valentin Stanič.

In the association, we sincerely thank all hikers for their participation and all volunteers who enabled the safe and successful execution of the event with their work.

Special thanks go to the Municipality of Kanal ob Soči and the companies Incom and Swisspearl for their support and sponsorships.

This year, we will donate part of the registration fees to the Tolmin Mountain Rescue Service, which was also present at this year's hike, as we wish to support their important mission.

The hike remains an important part of our tradition, as it connects respect for Valentin Stanič's heritage, love for nature, and the importance of socializing and active leisure time.
