Holy Cross above White Waters

Sunday morning 21.12.2008 before lunch my friend and I wanted to visit Holy Cross above White Waters (1054m). We drove towards Mozirje and into the valley where the Ljubija stream flows (before Mozirje right - direction towards Logarska). Beautiful valley all sparkling in the morning frost. We drove past the water intake (for Velenje and surroundings) and soon the macadam starts. The higher we go, the more snow on the road and the narrower the valley. Soon the car starts sliding with its undercarriage on the snow. The snow is icy and I don't feel the best (despite new winter tires). Soon in a steep slope - it won't go anymore!! No way to turn around and reverse back - soon the car pulls into the roadside ditch and we stop. Can't go forward - nor back. The clutch already smells a bit and the tires too - to the nearest house cca. 1 hour walk.. With spruce branches after quite some effort we finally push out and after 200m drive back we spot space to turn. We sigh in relief - decision for today is - enough challenge, check out Ljubija spring - for a beer and home for lunch. Ljubija Spring In picturesque gorge between Golts and Brloška peča in Triassic limestones lies karst spring of Ljubija. Spring is Vokliški type, permanent with flow 60-100 l/s. Gets its water underground from northern part of Golt and from streams flowing from impermeable rocks of Smrekovec and sinking at contact with limestone. Connection with these sinks proven by dyeing. Approx 150m lower from spring is intake for drinking water supply for Velenje municipality and surroundings. Trip remains in debt for holidays. Regards

You could go around to Velenje, past Šoštanj and Florjan to White Waters. The road is asphalted, regularly gritted and plowed! At the Savinek inn leave the car and continue on foot along the road that branches off behind the inn towards Sv. Križ and Smrekovec. The branch is marked. The walk along the road is less than 10 min to the sign, where the footpath to Sv. Križ branches off, also marked. Thus you are at the top in a good half hour! LP

This variant we will use next time. Probably, but this approach isn't so picturesque as this one? Do you know the Gorenje - Skorno approach? They advised us this (only later, when we had already returned ) Lp

This path runs partly along Martinova path (Gorenjski klanec - Sv. Anton Skorno), Šaleški path (Sv. Anton Skorno - Punčuh farm), then Šaleška joins the Skorno - Bele vode road, the path to Sv. Križ branches right (a bit before Ojstršek farm). This road, from which the path branches, leads further also to Ljubija spring, so I think you wanted to climb today exactly to this branch and then to Sv. Križ! But if there is some other approach also from Skorno, I haven't discovered it yet! LP

Thanks, for now. I'll inform you if we go to Sv. Križ during the holidays where our path will run. This one, where we drove today, will probably be impassable for some months if it doesn't thaw - for ordinary road vehicles. Also in spring the snow in this narrow ravine probably lasts very long. Lp

Today morning rushed to Sv. Križ. Wandered a bit in fog Gorenjski klanec - Skorno. Then found it. Quickly ascended in fog to summit. Met no one - from fog to sunlit landscape would need to rise at least cca. 200m more. Road suitable for sled descent. Quite some PVC remains around chapels and on path. Lp

(July '12) Can someone write GPS coordinates (or some others and I'll recalculate them) for Sv. Križ above Belimi Vodami? I don't know exactly where it is, so I can search for it on one of the web maps. P.S.: looks like I found on geoprostor.net: 46.40387, 14.94983 ?

Southern path (along ridge), which pika mentions, unfortunately not marked. At least we didn't spot any sign for path to St. Cross. But there was on one farm further from junction at Kovač (Bele Vode 59) sign for connectors' transverse (TV)

Path not marked, but traceable. From Kovač go along road then left past farm and wooden building uphill to saddle. There you'll see weekend house, past which TV (at least as I remember) turns straight towards Šoštanj. From weekend house left uphill continues forest road, just follow it and then cheerfully on towards Holy Cross (a bit by feel, since several side paths).

Two questions, if someone maybe knows: -Is it possible to continue path from Ljubija spring along gully to Brložnik and to Dom on Smrekovec? If yes, what's the path condition? -What do the green-blue markings on upper picture no. 29 mean? thanks

Of course possible and at least by two paths. Easier one along road through Ljubija gully to meadow and up it right shortcut or further along road and around by road to Sp. Brložnik. Harder over Brloški vrh, from it a bit down to meadows and left along them to road leading past Sp. Brložnik. When we reach road we're already on marked path to Smrekovec. Closer is the second, which is also more interesting. For better idea see: http://www.hribi.net/trenutnerazmere.asp?slo=1&gorovjeid=3&id=6383 Regards and safe steps from under beautiful Golte, Janez

Thanks for answer, Janez. We "youngsters" don't know so well and prefer to ask and along the way learn something new about Brloške peči, Konečka jama and Konečka planina. There's something in these areas that attracts again and again! Still don't know what those markings represent, blindly I'd guess Šaleška mountain path or TV - Couriers' path! Maybe someone knows?

The planned tour for this morning was postponed by heavy morning rain to next time... A little before nine, the precipitation partially calms and I use the backup plan. While driving on the most destroyed road in Slo. (Polzela - Andraž - Velenje), the rain intensity increases. I don't worry anymore. At Zdravc we drink coffee and head to Florjan/Beli Vode. We park and in light rain up the muddy slope. The higher we climb toward the top, the steeper it gets. Fog accompanies us and occasional rain drops. At the top, a moment of clarity and then it closes again. So we miss every view from the otherwise panoramic peak. We walk a bit around the church in southern snow and descend the road, which we cross in snow via shortcut through the forest. After 2h:37min and 9km we are dry at the starting point. lp
