Hello.

I've only been a hill and mountain hiker for the last two years. I don't have enough experience with real winter conditions yet, I mean winter with normal weather. I'm tempted to use winter or when there are still winter conditions to visit mid-mountain areas and maybe some higher mountains.

More demanding hiking-climbing trails are out for at least this winter. I recently acquired the previously missing crampons suitable for those trails, and an ice axe. I almost always hike only on marked trails, which I should stick to even more in winter. I'm not afraid in the mountains, but I hike within my abilities and progress gradually. Something slightly bothers me from the instructional video: How to Survive in Winter II., which is otherwise really great!:

Some of you have probably watched it or have enough experience yourselves. The warning in it is quite interesting, which - I have to admit - I didn't know: NEVER USE SKI POLES TOGETHER WITH CRAMPONS! Best for everyone to watch from 0:45 onwards until the mention of the above.

This is probably meant for steeper, firmer (or not) terrains, where ice axes compared to poles are smaller, easier to handle and more specialized tools for falls, slips and actually help with stopping and also easier and safer climbing. Now, if the trail in mid-mountains is under snow and not too steep, but still firm, partly icy, then poles and crampons probably go together. Ice axe also within hand reach if needed. Poles still give some support, at least to those who use them a lot.

What do you say? Best to have everything with you and act according to actual conditions, right?

I suggest company of an experienced mountaineer...some course on movement in mountains in winter...mountaineering club...or maybe even alpine school.
I listed you some variants...that way you'll get the most experience and knowledge.
Many more nice moments in the hills nasmeh

Someone has to show you, explain, give advice like that, currently there are quite a few events for safe hiking in mountains, take those youtube videos just for what awaits you. But it's a big "problem" if you don't know the summer path then in winter it's "hard" to go to mountains, it's not guaranteed it'll always be trodden or properly trodden, markers are covered, path really goes its own way a bit, but direction is known. Today I wondered myself how I'd find the right path if I didn't know the summer one. As for ice axe, crampons, poles, winter boots, helmet...they'll teach you that on the course.

As LG says, best is to attend a course, where they'll explain everything nicely and winter hiking will be a great pleasure for you. Additionally, participation in some easier hikes led by a guide is recommended, where knowledge is further built and reinforced.
