Jelenk (Jelenik), 787 m

Print

Because the nice days keep calling into nature, after work I headed to Jelenik, the 787 m high hill above Bate (from N. Gorica, past Grgar, Grgarske Ravne towards Banjšice). From Bate towards Kanalski vrh I reached the marked turnoff to Jelenik on asphalt. The path mostly runs through forest, crosses the new power line setup which sadly roughly cut into the nice forest and ends at the top on typical karst furrows. The view was great, reaching to the Julian Alps and across all Banjšice.

Today I visited Banjšice again, which always lure me anew although I have to drive quite some km to get there. You can just walk around the plateau, mainly known for fierce battles during WWI. In autumn 1917 during the 11th Soča offensive on Banjšice 40,000 Italian and 10,000 Austrian soldiers died. On the edges of the plateau there are many military cemeteries. You can do interesting circular tours on individual parts of the plateau or just climb individual peaks, Sv. Lovrenc, Zgorelec, Vetrnik, Jelenk, with wonderful views on villages on the plateau, Julian Alps and even Dolomites, Sveta Gora, and sea too, depending on which peak you stand. Today I only climbed Jelenk, as the grandkids spent too much time exploring shooting trenches, caverns, and also interesting museum in Lohke village where a local collected many items. Our starting point was Bate village.
The path runs through a varied forest.1

On Thursday - 23.09.2021 we Škofja Loka retirees PD Škofja Loka - Thursday group drove past Cerkno to Kanal. Meanwhile they are widening the road and semaphores slowed us several times. From Kanal from town center on marked path Three Sanctuaries. Soon sign for our goal - Jelenk appears. In less than an hour we reached village Kanalski vrh. From village sign directs to Jelenk. Marked path brings us in one hour to rocky summit of Jelenk. Below summit of Jelenk we spot nice little tower with stamp and logbook. Summit of Jelenk is distinctly rocky with typical škraplji. These are undercut channels on bare surfaces of hard limestone formed by running water. Along rocky ridge we can walk to summit marker. The fire brigade one was made in village Kanalski vrh. Path was dry. Made about 600 m ascent. For path up and down from Kanal with breaks about five hours - valid for retirees groups.

Avoid village Kanalski vrh. It is full of loose dogs that attack people.

I went from the village Dragovica to Jelenk on the marked path. Pleasant rocky summit, below it a logbox with stamp. On the side towards Kanalski vrh quite a steep drop. Rocks shaped into škarplje, interesting. Reachable in a good half hour. Along the way I picked wild garlic, pesto already made. It grows in one little valley below the summit. Well marked, signs on the path to all starting points: Morsko, Bate, Kanal, Kanalski vrh, Dragovica. Panoramic summit towards Krn and surroundings. Nice view also on the huge reservoir lake...
