Because the nice days keep calling into nature, after work I headed to Jelenik, the 787 m high hill above Bate (from N. Gorica, past Grgar, Grgarske Ravne towards Banjšice). From Bate towards Kanalski vrh I reached the marked turnoff to Jelenik on asphalt. The path mostly runs through forest, crosses the new power line setup which sadly roughly cut into the nice forest and ends at the top on typical karst furrows. The view was great, reaching to the Julian Alps and across all Banjšice.

Today I visited Banjšice again, which always lure me anew although I have to drive quite some km to get there. You can just walk around the plateau, mainly known for fierce battles during WWI. In autumn 1917 during the 11th Soča offensive on Banjšice 40,000 Italian and 10,000 Austrian soldiers died. On the edges of the plateau there are many military cemeteries. You can do interesting circular tours on individual parts of the plateau or just climb individual peaks, Sv. Lovrenc, Zgorelec, Vetrnik, Jelenk, with wonderful views on villages on the plateau, Julian Alps and even Dolomites, Sveta Gora, and sea too, depending on which peak you stand. Today I only climbed Jelenk, as the grandkids spent too much time exploring shooting trenches, caverns, and also interesting museum in Lohke village where a local collected many items. Our starting point was Bate village.

Avoid village Kanalski vrh. It is full of loose dogs that attack people.
