Jeronim Loop

We haven't hiked much above Vransko yet, so the goal this time was to make the most of the day. A nice circular variant around Jeronim Valley emerged, starting and ending right in Vransko.

To start, we headed to the ridge right above the highway. The path to it isn't marked, in snow it was questionable in places. We turned onto it at the end of the village right after the marker signs, which we deliberately ignored. When we puffed up to the emergency bivouac on Rigeljn, that was also the end of searching for the poorly visible path. In the continuation there are tons of them, just need to pick the right one zavijanje z očmi.

From Srobotniška planina onwards we followed markers all the way. Some hiking ones, some E 6, some Jakob's, sometimes combos of all listed, quite a few unmarked gravel roads too. Again the biggest trouble is choosing the right direction among tons of possibles. We stuck to the valley slopes and kept height towards Smolnik. One more hop onto it and we started descending to Lipa saddle. Here we finally started turning east nasmeh.

Continuation went towards panoramic Sv. Jošt and the highest peak of the day ... Tolsti vrh. That one isn't panoramic at all, so we left it quick and continued to Sv. Katarina and Čreta. So many religious and partisan monuments piled up you rarely see anywhere. Then descent to the nice hut on Čreta with friendly staff and after the only longer stop of the day final descent past Prilopov into the valley. We got to the start from the opposite direction than planned in the morning.

Total 28 km path and 1700 elevation. With a bit of orientation sense the first part over Rigelj isn't too tough velik nasmeh. If anyone needs GPS track, can get it from me. More in photo story ...

Start coordinates: 46.245889, 14.953085

Jeronim Loop Vransko ... morning start1
Jeronim Loop At the end of the village towards Trojan there is a cluster of markers. Right behind them we turned onto an unmarked path2
Jeronim Loop On the poorly trodden path we slowly ascended above the valley3
Jeronim Loop Ancient feeding trough. Tree moss has already thoroughly covered the edge of the roof4
Jeronim Loop View to the opposite side of the valley, which we will traverse much later5
Jeronim Loop Emergency bivouac at Rigeljn ...6
Jeronim Loop ... and its modest interior7
Jeronim Loop From the bivouac onwards the path is well visible8
Jeronim Loop Part of the route is on freshly churned cart track, ideal for new shoes :)9
Jeronim Loop The abundance of turn-offs can cause plenty of trouble with the right direction10
Jeronim Loop The snow cover was thicker on the north, considerably thinner on the south side or absent altogether.11
Jeronim Loop Despite extensive fallen trees in the past, the path is mostly cleared of debris.12
Jeronim Loop Obviously it will still be winter :)13
Jeronim Loop In many places the path runs along the Styrian variant of Jakobova pot.14
Jeronim Loop At the edge of Srobotniška planina it was blowing fiercely.15
Jeronim Loop Here it was the worst in terms of wind. The open space allowed strong through-draft.16
Jeronim Loop Despite the wind we progress, the sun does not help much.17
Jeronim Loop Some new pitons ...18
Jeronim Loop The marked path is occasionally well snow-covered.19
Jeronim Loop Here also passes the European footpath E6.20
Jeronim Loop View back at the ravaged slope where we walked along the lower edge.21
Jeronim Loop Junction to Smolnik, part of Savinjska pot.22
Jeronim Loop On the summit23
Jeronim Loop View slightly below the summit.24
Jeronim Loop Lipnik saddle with countless markings.25
Jeronim Loop Chapel at the saddle with faded but beautiful frescoes.26
Jeronim Loop Towards Jošt.27
Jeronim Loop St. Jošt28
Jeronim Loop Jošt is an excellent viewpoint.29
Jeronim Loop ... and we are already heading towards Tolsti vrh. Fallen trees dictate another direction.30
Jeronim Loop A few centimeters of snow, just right for the atmosphere :)31
Jeronim Loop Tolsti vrh, the highest hill around. Unfortunately no view in any direction.32
Jeronim Loop Almost immediately we head towards Čreta33
Jeronim Loop Snow tongues ...34
Jeronim Loop Old homestead, still full of life35
Jeronim Loop He barked all the time, but needed only a little petting :)36
Jeronim Loop Sign for the viewpoint37
Jeronim Loop What would we do here without all sorts of crosses :(38
Jeronim Loop view39
Jeronim Loop Towards Čreta. We continue on the Savinjska route40
Jeronim Loop St. Katarina with a quite special belfry41
Jeronim Loop Official markers42
Jeronim Loop Belfry up close. Probably had to lower it due to lightning43
Jeronim Loop Čreta is not far now44
Jeronim Loop In the middle of nowhere is also the 16th-century church of Our Lady45
Jeronim Loop Same church from another perspective46
Jeronim Loop Hut on Čreta, our first longer break47
Jeronim Loop Pleasant interior with friendly staff48
Jeronim Loop We head towards Vransko ...49
Jeronim Loop Grey path, lead me ...50
Jeronim Loop Already descending ...51
Jeronim Loop Views52
Jeronim Loop Pleasant, never too steep53
Jeronim Loop There is a huge number of markers54
Jeronim Loop Garfield :)55
Jeronim Loop We continue past Prilop56
Jeronim Loop A very special trail marker :)57
Jeronim Loop We are already in the valley58
Jeronim Loop Vransko59

Nice trip! Since I haven't been to the "lower" end yet, your afternoon pics invited me to Rigelj, Plešnikov vrh, Blednik and panoramic meadows above Jakovi Dol. Thanks for the idea... If you're ever back in these parts, recommend detour past Srobotniška to meadows with view to Menina and to top of nice viewpoint (Žlajfe). best, Andrej
