Yesterday's tour to Kals-Matreier-Torl (2207m) definitely deserves the title of tour of the season among my tours this year. With a buddy from Mojstrana, we drove to the Tauern valley to the village of Huben, which lies at the junction of the Kalsertal and Defereggental valleys. Here we started our circular tour. We crossed the bridge over the Isel river and immediately after the bridge turned left onto a narrow asphalted road, which is also a bike path to the town of Matrei. There, just above the church on the main road, we turned right into the 13 km long asphalted winding panoramic climb (later replaced by a nicely groomed gravel path), which took us to the top of the Goldried ski area. The highest point of the tour (2300m) was right after the gondola station Adler Lounge (2390m). This was followed by a good km of traversing through a steep slope to the Kals-Matreier-Torl hut. The hut is built on a saddle above the Tauern and Kalser valleys with wonderful views of Austria's top Grossglockner and the Virgen valley. We made a short stop, then followed the best part of the tour, the descent to Kals. From the hut we went on an extremely nice singletrack through the grassy slope under Blauspits. After a few meters it branches right; the left path leads to the chairlift station and Blauspits restaurant. Later the path goes through a larch forest and after about three km we reach the ski area, where a well-compacted gravel road starts to the village Grossdorf and then Kals, where we reach the main road. This was followed by another 12 km descent down the Kalser valley to Huben. Wonderful tour, which was definitely the icing on the cake of this year's biker season. The warm clear weather did its part and of course the fantastic autumn colors that wrapped our tour in beautiful views.
