I started yesterday's tour in the village of Lavant about 10 km before Lienz. Already right at the start, a kilometer-long pilgrimage path to the wonderful church of St. Ulrich awaits me. Just above it stands another church of St. Peter and Paul, and here the asphalt surface ends, replaced ahead by a nicely maintained gravel path. The path climbs some 8 km, where it then ends in the middle of the forest. From there, one has to walk a good 100 vertical meters through the forest, after which we reach another forest path, which in a steep descent brings us to the main asphalted road coming from the valley. Some 2 km of ascent to the parking area awaits me, where the motorized path ends. Next follows a nice gravel path, which after a good 200 m brings me to the wonderful Dolomiten hutte built on a rock above the abyss. A good km of flat follows to the chapel and pasture Instein. Here the path's incline quickly increases, as it becomes all steeper. The path runs through larch forest all the way, which a good km below the top retreats, and I spot today's goal. Exceptional semicircular backdrop of peaks surrounding the Karlsbader hut. I quickly bike the remaining km. The hut—rightly I'd say a smaller hotel—is located right above Lake Laserz with wonderful views; the peaks around it full of ferratas, alpine routes, and also hiking ones. I make a longer stop as the weather was ideal for martinčkanje. It was hard to leave this paradise, but one had to return. To the Dolomiten hut I go by the same path, then continue the descent on the asphalt road to Lake Tristacher. There also stands a nicely arranged camp. The lake is for swimming. I descend further to the valley, and three flat km to Lavant remain. Great tour not only for MTBers, but hikers too will be thrilled by the exceptional nature backdrop.
