Yesterday my colleague and I went exploring across the border. We wanted to discover the path to Stol from the Austrian side - protected ferrata. In the end we found it, but we were already too tired to continue. That goal will remain for another time.

Start of course at Ljubelj. Already at seven there were tons of cars in the parking lot. Then along the path above the hut at Vrtače to Zelenica. There they had everything prepared for a big celebration. Then we continued towards Vrtača. At the saddle before the ascent to Vrtača onto the marked path to saddle Beljščica-1840m. This is a traverse under the Vrtača ridge - quite scree-filled, talus. Here in summer you find real fields of gentians. From the saddle descent to Mačenska planina, where Celovska hut is. Because we wanted to discover the path to the protected ferrata to Stol we headed straight from the saddle to the talus fields, which turned out to be a mistake requiring long traverse of steep talus. The talus is crisscrossed with traverses. Unfortunately we chose the upper talus track. We should have taken the lower one, which would have led us to the start of the ferrata. Unfortunately we got too tired traversing the entire talus, so we just descended to the road that leads from the valley to Mačenska planina. Here we first realized that actually from the road a path leads across the talus upwards to the start of the protected path. We returned past Celovska hut back to the saddle and went along the marked path that leads to Prešernova koča from the saddle. At the path junction in Kožnah then along the lower path to saddle Šija to the hut at the source of Završnica and back past the hut at Zelenica, where the ensemble Zarja was playing the last tunes. Playful hikers were dancing to waltzes and polkas.
