I've already looked for something on this topic, but couldn't find it. So, I've had a problem with my right knee for some time (I think this shape is quite common). It torments me with pain that starts approximately after 0-5-1h of walking, of course downhill. The pain activates all of a sudden, but it's very annoying. I've heard there are some knee exercises to slowly solve this problem. Maybe some strap would help? As I notice, it seems that during downhill walking some pain activates, it hurts when pressing on the bent knee, and pushing off with the equally bent one (if the leg is straight, it usually doesn't hurt). I think it's also a bit conditioned by when the legs are already tired from a longer hike (then it starts even faster at the beginning of downhill walking). Of course now I want to start solving this problem, because I don't want to always 'suffer' the last half hour. Grateful for all advice and experiences. Best regards Pero_24

I have the same problem, haven't found a solution yet . Tried knee elastic bands and stretching right after the hike. Wasn't much better. Sometimes pain lasts a few days after the hike, depending on the hike length.

Advice from orthopedist (I have chronic knee pain and wear): - bike (stationary, trekking,...) - knee exercises (find on net or visit physio) - orthosis/knee brace (helps me a lot downhill) - TENS electro stimulator - painkillers (use only when really bad) - tablets (glucosamine...), hyaluronic acid injections: helps some, not others Best Anja

Uhh, thanks everyone for such quick and massive response. I have a bike in plan, assembling a road one again, which I rode very actively a few years ago, and if I remember right, back then I didn't have these issues on descents, it appeared more after I stopped active cycling. Maybe memory deceives me, but hope it helps I'll try some other listed things too.

Oh, and this: walk with poles, that's the best way to relieve knees.

For those suffering from knee wear: http://artros.si/pogoste_tezave/obraba_hrustanca/ It's wrong to think wear is irreversible. Of course it costs, as insurance doesn't cover this treatment. But very successful in treating knee wear. Depends on method chosen and how bad the wear is. To all most successful treatment and safe steps from under beautiful Golts, Janez

Colleagues tried litozin and say it helps. I wear elastic sock when knee hurts and do knee ligament exercises for over 30 years. Magnetotherapy helps with injury too.

Spruce ointment helps me, I massage it (15 minutes) into the knee then wrap the knee with food foil (transparent). May it help you too Pero 24

A thought and warning … knee cartilage treatment and what can happen My dear one decided for surgery of the meniscus at the beginning of the year after injury. She got the injury at Struška while pulling ticks from a hole in the bushes. The surgery succeeded fully as expected, she also received preventive injections of her own blood plasma using the Orthokin method to prevent cartilage wear. Everything was great and during the year we walked almost 2000 km of trails of all difficulties. No problems. Since Orthokin method works only about half a year, the orthopedist suggested advanced and longer cartilage protection with hyaluronic acid. Tested a thousand times and safe, but unfortunately not in Mateja's case. Her immune system smoothly rejected the hyaluronic acid, and her legs swelled from the knees up like balloons. Multiple knee punctures and piles of targeted medications unfortunately didn't help. The body persistently rejected the injected fluid, fever was rising and nothing left but a more radical intervention. Triple laparoscopy of the knee and removal of the knee capsule completely grounded Mateja and currently she can't walk more than a few dozen meters. Long-term rehabilitation with uncertain outcome awaits her and we can only hope that one day we will continue with endless trails. So be careful with decisions for treatment with such method. More on private messages.

Bagi, thanks for the warning about treatment with hyaluronic acid. Really horrific photo of the consequences of cartilage protection with hyaluronic acid. I wish Mateja quick rehabilitation of the injury and that you two soon enjoy endless mountain visits again. Good luck!

This seems horrible to me, what Mateja is going through, I really wish her the quickest recovery . Everything that grounds you is torment for us hikers. Otherwise I swear by Rokovnjacica's advice, spruce ointment (can be made at home), evening a little knee massage, then overnight wrap with food foil. A few years ago I healed my knee quite well this way, but forgot that after a few years you need to repeat this therapy. Well, now I'm applying again because the knee acted up again. But it's already better .

Emil thanks for writing what is happening with Mateja. I wish her the quickest recovery and also. Let's hope everything will be fine. It would really be a shame if she couldn't visit your trails together. We would be deprived of many of your trip reports. Merry holidays and happy 2025.
