The weather forecast for today seemed somewhat more promising for the northern side of the Karawanks, so I headed over Ljubelj to Poden (Bodental). But it was raining there, after about half an hour of waiting I decided to drive a bit further to Rute (Bärental). On the way it almost cleared up in the valley, but at the parking lot before the end of the plowed road it poured rain again. Miserably I turned back towards Ljubelj, but the turnoff to Poden tempted me again, where luckily it wasn't raining anymore. I left the car a little aside from friendly Podnar. Since there were quite a few avalanches on the road to Rute, in the general thaw I chose the safest option - Kosmatica. The path (actually a road, which on www.pespoti.si is not drawn), is groomed in the lower part for runners, from about Mlake onwards just trodden or skied by tour skiers. To the top it's not far, some 600m elevation gain and good 5km. A little below the summit I stopped for a moment at Vgrizeva planina (Ogris Alm), where there's one single old hut, the nice new one apparently burned in 2017. On the top it was blowing hard, so I quickly packed the dogs and glided down swiftly, as much as possible on the completely corn snow. I skied mostly on the road, but still cut some corners through the forest and skipped one nice steep flank which with numerous stumps and corn snow didn't appeal to me much. Well, next time... There's still a lot of snow, under the foggy cover the scree area below Vrtača and Zelenjaks was visible, quite well covered but crossed by a few avalanches. The gully will be skiable sooner or later, if not already. All the time it was foggy, cloudy, rainy, but the day didn't go completely to waste.

On Saturday we were on Kosmatica. We did a circular tour from Poden: from Ogriz to Ogrizova planina, down to Mlaka and to Podnar. The pater familias sacrificially took care of bridging the distance between Ogriz and Podnar. More at this link.
