Košuta Traverse

Today I ran the Košuta ridge from Veliki vrh to Košutnikov turn. At the end I also climbed Tolsta Košuta. On the way back I ran through Dolga Njiva, Tegoška planina, Pungart, Šija and Kofce. Weather in the high mountains was super, while there was fog in the valley - I think luckily on the Austrian side even a bit denser.

Long ridge of Košuta from A-Z. But Tolsta Košuta which will remain for another time. So from Veliki vrh to Košutnikov turn with all goodies that come in between nasmeh
Long and strenuous, but full of adventures nasmeh
The first morning rays illuminate the Julian Alps.1
The first ray of light illuminates Kofce.2
The path underfoot, the path is still long...3
The locals are not too happy to see me, so I leave them in peace.4
Children are playing :)5
On Kamniške, obviously a NLP is parked???6
Flying saucer on KSA :)7
Only the lonely ...8
Košuta's ridge is long. Planina Pungrat is kitschily green below :)9
Telemark skiing paradise. I'll probably be here many more times in winter.10
During the snack it was bothering me between my legs.11
Veliki vrh is already far behind.12
I also found the culprit for the cloudiness that day. A volcano named Storžič :)13
Košutnikov turn reached, now a long way back awaits me.14
On the way back I disturbed this uncle during his afternoon rest.15
Now through beautiful pastures back to Kofce.16
Planina Pungrat.17
Planina Pungrat.18
A little more and it will clear up.19
Planina Šija.20
And finally Kofce :)21

Hello,
interested if anyone has already gone along the entire ridge of Košuta? So from Veliki vrh to Košutni turn or vice versa... How many days could this path take (with some rest day), how many mountain huts on the way and how demanding it could be - options?

Thanks in advance for your kind, constructive opinions velik nasmeh

Regards, Ksandarela

Constructively, first get the Storžič mountaineering map, which costs as much as three beers in the innvelik nasmeh, read descriptions on this forum or PZS site and first study everything calmly at home.
If you're out of shape, you really need two days, otherwise the tour will remain in bad memory. If you exercise regularly, I suggest as soon as possible when days are long, drive to Matizovec and via Kofce towards Veliki vrh. To the Turn along the ridge, back under it, where there are quite a few pastures for refreshment.
Happy trails and lots of enjoyment I wish you.

On Sunday first time on Košuta. As usual, I make a circular hiking-cycling tour. At night I leave the bike at Mrzli studenec and drive by car through Mrzla dolina and Penatca to the Košutnik junction. I start hiking at 4:30 am. Almost full moon and first signs of day help me find the unmarked path junction to Pl. Zgornja Dolga njiva towards the Turn. Also a wooden installation at the entrance to the logged scree helps. Nice and not too steep path through scree and on steep slopes leads to the border ridge and then to the top of Košutnikov turn.
After the western path junction, the real ridge poetry begins, first over Macesja rocks, then over Tegoška gora meadows. The path is wild, barely marked, with loose protections, romantic, beautiful and completely solitary.
The wild romance suddenly breaks at Škrbina, where the path from Pungrat joins. From there crowds of people accompany me and muddy path over Kladivo to Veliki vrh and then to Dom na Kofcah. There I don't treat myself to struklji because of incredible crowd, and after two Unions I head to Mrzli studenec. With the bike downhill in a moment back to the car at Košutnik.

They say Košuta with its 14 km long ridge is probably the longest Slovenian mountain. Given that on the ridge you climb and cross as many as 11 peaks over 2000 meters, it could be true. So on 13.9.2022 I crossed the following 10 two-thousanders: Veliki vrh, Toplar, Kofce gora, Malo kladivo, Kladivo, Pungartska gora, Tegoška Gora, Užnik, Macesje, Ostrv, Košutnikov turn, and below the ridge Gamsovk, descended to Zg. and Sp. Dolga njiva alpine pasture, crossed Tegoška planina and after 10 hours, 27 km walk returned to the start at Planina Pungart, where I left the car in the morning. The path is beautiful, but long and strenuous, in the second part also technically somewhat more demanding, and without emergency exits.
In the morning I start at Planina Pungart.1
Across Planina Šija.2
on the serpentine path to the top of Veliki Vrh on Košuta.3
From the summit towards Očak.4
This is the ridge.5
towards Kofce6

along the ridge9
from the ridge to the starting point.10
Čijajnik, along the path. Two years ago I climbed it.11
Window in the ridge.12
And on the top of Košutnikov Turn. The ridge took me less than 5 hours.13
At Planina Dolga Njiva the beer hit the spot.14
And back at the starting point.15

Yesterday I successfully traversed the Košuta ridge from Veliki vrh to Košutnikov turn. Whenever I looked at this ridge it wouldn't let me rest, yesterday I finally tackled this feat. Path without special features, well visible and marked, just in the last part some wire a bit loose. Of course the path drags on, you go down and up several times substantially. Timetable: total with breaks 14 hours, pure walking I'd say 12 hours. At 5:00 start below Matizovec, to Kofce 1 hour, at Veliki vrh from 7:30, to Kladivo 1 hour. For the whole ridge from Veliki vrh to Košutnikov turn 5 hours. 1 hour for descent to Dolgih Njiv, then walk across Tegoška planina, planina Pungart and Šija to Kofce, which took 3 hours. At Kofce well-deserved štruklji and another 1 hour to Matizovec.

On 7.9.2023 I climbed Tolsta Košuta and Košutnikov turn, on 3.10.2025 I traversed the rest of the ridge from Košutnikov turn to Veliki vrh with descent to Kofce. It was wonderful weather, blue sky without a single cloud, icy cold and partly frost on the path. Video about it is available on my YouTube channel (Andrej Friedl YouTube) under the title Košuta, traverse under the blue sky, 3.10.2025.
