Kriška planina

I haven't come across anyone writing about this main grazing and touristically important Krvavec pasture yet.

We can go up by gondola and walk to the pasture. The route by car will be more interesting for us. We can stop the car at the top of Ambrož and go along the forest path, which is well marked; only the start has no signs, as it begins right before we turn to the farm stay Pr Ambružarju on the left. After about five minutes of walking there's a path junction. We can choose the left or right variant. The left takes us past the paraglider launch site and brings us a bit further left to the left side of Jezerce pasture, the right to the right side of it. Or we can drive by car to the large parking lot at Jezerce pasture. There's a ramp; a wide asphalted road leads here. Now we can go straight along the road and turn right at the sewage plant and reach the pasture. It's nicer to go from the parking lot right towards Jezerce pasture and soon at the big panoramic viewpoint board turn left on a nice path. The path leads us under Kržišče, which is actually the right side of Kriška planina, a wonderful ski slope in winter with remains of jumps. Now we actually see a yellow field of pasque flowers. What narcissuses are for Golica, that's Kržišče on the Jezerce pasture side for pasque flowers. This path brings us opposite the parking lot under the apartment complex, which are now mostly privately owned; years ago they were from factories. Part of this facility is also a pleasant inn. Kriška pasture is important in winter because a nice ski piste runs here. From here we ski to Kržišče or take the lift back to the central Krvavec ski slopes. Here on the right we have four accommodation options in summer as well as winter. First is farm stay at Vižinčarju; highly recommend, an eagle totem greets us at the entrance. Above it apartments, whose owner I don't know. Then Apartments Pr Škrjancu, who have a nice farm - the last one in Stiška vas. The last is inn or farm stay Pr Florjanu, who also have a wonderful farm stay at the top of Ambrož called Pr Ambružarju. They also have a nice hut on the far right edge of the pasture, reached from Kamniška Bistrica or continuing to Koren pasture and on to Košutna pasture or Kompotela, but open only in winter. So plenty of reasons to visit. We can sit comfortably and enjoy home-cooked food. From here continue the hike to Krvavec along the comfortable ski piste that brings us right under the Krvavec hotel or along the path above the inns right to the hotel and Plečnik chapel. Really a suitable trip with kids, for slightly older ones who can't walk far but want to breathe mountain air. Attaching a bunch of nice pics.

On Sunday I climbed to Kriška planina. I started the route at the lower cable car station at Krvavec, then ascended through Lukenjski graben to Ambrož below Krvavec, from there continued to planina Jezerce and on to Kriška planina.
Descended along Trdovnik ridge.

This spruce on the 13th picture reminded me of a similar one that once grew on Mali Poljana under Tolsti vrh, but it's no longer there. I too wondered at such sprawling branches - I need to check my archive, as I know I photographed it. Seeing it's not a lone specimen, I "googled" a bit and surprisingly found it could be the so-called Snake or Serpentine spruce, which
is like that due to mutation of genetic patterns. Apparently only about 10 specimens known in Slovenia.
Tadej, if this is IT we can be glad we stumbled on this rarity and noticed it without knowingnasmeh

I've seen some snake spruces already and it reminded me of that first too.

The spruce in picture 13 is a common spruce.
I wrote to the Slovenia Forest Institute and got this response from Kranj branch, publishing part of it, and thank them for the detailed answer.

"From the picture it's clear it's a common spruce. The spruce was obviously damaged several times in the past, had the top broken off, and each time several branches took over the top role, leading to this interesting bushy shape. Bushy spruces with multiple tops are more common around mountain pastures. In the mountain world strong winds that break the top are more frequent, individual exposed trees can be hit by lightning multiple times, trees on pasture are also more often damaged by humans or livestock. Condition for such growth form is that the tree had enough light from all sides all the time, so it grew standalone all its life on open pasture surface. Due to frequent and strong wounds such trees are usually sick - fungal infection enters through wounds, most often red rot appears. As rot progresses, the tree becomes less resistant to external factors. Static stability decreases especially, which over time can lead to felling of the whole tree or individual branches (windthrow, snowbreak), which unfortunately is visible on your picture too."

Lots of talk about accesses, so today I said to myself, let's do one from as low as possible. From P at the Velka station through Korošica valley, which of course is no longer in the shape we liked to drive to the sandpit. Already the entrance to the valley is gone, then the 'road' and stream share space all the time. Above Markovo left to Kriška planina, where the lower part of the path basically no longer existszmeden you look a bit for marks, and you're sort of in the right directionnasmeh on the planina this year's calves are grazing too, well, resting by moms more. Over Kržišče and along steep connecting ridge towards Planjava. Even a shepherd's cleaver is found. Before the path catches the slopes of Kamniški vrh then left back and soon steeply down a nice trail. At Markovo I find hunter's traverse towards Mokrica, at junction then down to sandpit. Return over Brsnike dragged on. Whole day alone, so in the crowd upon return to civilization seeing Irish car plate I remembered internal joke: globally some billion is traveling thousands km from home every moment. Second billion frantically planning on web how to do such trip soon. Third and fourth thinking tomorrow really need to check web where to travel soon... Yeah, we remained restless, even Serengeti warthogs can hide from usmežikanje cheers
Roughly like this - up the blue track, back the orange one.1
