Križ-Stenar-Bovški Gamsovec

I don't know what the point is of putting 100 uncaptioned pics here, or the author doesn't recognize views and mountains on them anyway. Pics should show the actual state of the path, conditions and peculiarities or warn about facts important for repeaters of such trips. Such posts are more for Facebook fans and ego promoters. What I praise is the length of the nearly circular nice tour.

On Friday "šajba" was forecast, so we used the forecast for an all-day tour. Although somewhat less šajba was expected in the mountains , the tour succeeded perfectly. Fog spiced the tour, accompanying most of the ascent. We started a bit before six in the hard dark with headlamps. After a good hour of walking it started dawning, but darkness was replaced by fog. In bivouac IV we met two who were just waking up, after a short rest we continued towards the first goal, Križ. Roughly at the fork Križ - Dolkova špica blue showed from the fog and expectations that it would finally open were growing larger. And it did. Just below the summit of Križ it opened on all sides. On Križ we met two runners. Since warm sun replaced fog we didn't want to descend, especially not since fog again showed its stubbornness and covered everything around. We descended the same path and headed to Stenar. Fog persisted to the summit, then it opened again. Despite fog rushing all around, there was no noteworthy wind. Soon after leaving the summit we entered fog again and it persisted right to the top of Bovški Gamsovec. Initially we wanted to descend via Sovatna due to fog, but since time allowed we decided also for Bovški Gamsovec, of course hoping fog would retreat for the third time. And it did there too, but only briefly. We descended towards Luknja, where fat chamois greeted us, obviously well prepared for the coming winter. From Luknja just a nice view of autumn-colored Vrata and hydration at Aljažev dom

Skala and Sonny, thanks for the detailed description and photos! Is it better to go in the direction Vrata-Gamsovec-Križ-Vrata or reverse? Thanks for reply!

The described direction suited me fine. The advantage is that you go up (up is safer than down) on the exposed and pebble-strewn path to Bovška vratca. But it's fine either way, attractive in both directions.

Copying the same comment here too. Is this path officially still open? On 24 Aug I reached Križ via path over Bovška vratica and planned to continue on this path (over Dovška vrata) to Stenar via Stenarska vratca. First, below the summit a bolt from the fixed rope is torn out (doesn't cause problem even on descent), then a bit further it looks like a landslide happened. Another hiker had the same path idea, with whom we then pondered for a while if descent is safe and checked terrain, as path seemed buried. Then a foreign hiker came (who crossed the rocks above under the summit directly over landslide and dislodged big stones - if we hadn't hesitated, it would have hit us). Together we managed to reach Stenarska vratca, but not exactly on marked path, as it seemed too dangerous for descent.

The section of direct variant ahead from Križ is closed due to landslide, marked with X on rocks. Can be done otherwise, but awkward. Otherwise the path is below... so from Križ return back towards Bovška vratca, to the place where fixed rope starts, then cross under Križ towards Stenarska vratca. Somewhere in between the closed upper variant joins this path.

On Sunday the day was perfect for visiting the Julian Alps and with ascent over Sovatna towards Kriški podi Nessy and I started early. At 2000 m I was thinking of turning back, as weather was very unpleasant, cold, gray and windy - far from forecast. But curiosity wins and I climb a bit more to peek over edge towards Pogačnik, where weather is clear and sunny. We leave marked path under Pihavec, where we scare a herd of chamois, then head to Pogačnikov dom. Just as we arrive, rescue action on Razor, as rock flew onto someone's hand during final ascent below summit. Helicopter soon leaves, we two rest a bit, then head to Križ. On path we run into angry local ibex females, so we hurry on nimble feet. Overcome a couple of fixed ropes - here again proved I have chamois instead of dog, and around 13h we stand on top of 2410 m high Križ. Followed arduous descent past Bivak na Rušju to parking. Considering I skipped last weekend, the path went well from my feet, so we actively walked over 8 hours. Despite gloomy start we spent wonderful autumn day in heart of Julian Alps - where nicest, above 2000 m, surrounded by mighty peaks

Today's long-awaited tour finally done. Start at 5 from Vrata. (Warning: although the barrier shows 30 free spots left, we got the last or penultimate free spot. Supposedly set wrong) Via Bivak IV (because I don't like Sovatna much ) to Križ and Stenar. Descent to Pogačnikov dom and after snack to Gamsovec and down via Luknja. Weather cloudy/sunny. While ascending I was in clouds, on summit in sun - top combo. Caution on descent from Križ - go a bit back and descend nasty scree. STOP stone marks no continuation along ridge. Descent to Luknja lovely, but from Luknja to Aljaž in hot sun a real slog. 10/10 tour, recommend. 20 km, 2100m gain. Recommend helmet.
