On Wednesday 21.07.2010 I decided to go to Krn a bit differently. This path is not described on this website, so I share my observations and opinion about the path. I started the hike already at dawn from in front of the waterfall at Savica. I was at the hut on Komna already around seven. Then towards the hut below Bogatin and towards Bogatinsko sedlo. After less than four hours of moderate walking from Savica I was at the intersection where the start of the path to Krn is. At the gentle saddle the signpost directs left to Krn via Peske. To the right you go to Krnsko jezero. The path follows the old military road, initially the path is quite overgrown, then the path is clearly visible throughout. At the hut below Bogatin there is a signpost which says the hike takes five and a half hours. After approximately one hour of walking from the Peske signpost we are already at the so-called very wide scree field, which ends even with a fairly extensive snowfield. Soon we are at the Austrian military monument of the First World War. Then we walk along the Krn ridge for about an hour. Some places are a bit exposed, worth being careful. Everything reminds of the carnage of the First World War. The descent on concreted stairs is very interesting. Then basically only the approach to the top of Krn awaits us, which is a bit steep or towards the shelter on Krn. The summit unfortunately has neither a stamp nor a logbook. Everything is available at the shelter. The shelter is currently being renovated, which is an unpleasant surprise for hikers. I went back towards Krnsko jezero. You can descend the scree on the visible path or on the marked path to the lake. From the lake back to Komna and to the car in the valley. For this tour the day is quite short. It only comes into consideration for exceptionally well-prepared ones. I had about five liters of drink with me and nothing was left. The tour is beautiful, offers an exceptional experience of history and beauty of our mountains.

Nice circular tour, Velkavrh. Very hot in summer days. Perhaps it would be worth correcting the sentence: "Then we walk along the Krn ridge for about an hour." From the marker onwards you actually first walked between Mali and Veliki Peski, then left under Vrh nad Peski, then, judging by the description, you crossed Batognjica and descended from it to Krnska škrbina. From there onwards we can speak of Krn ...

Everything is fine. No need to apologize or thank. On the map Krnsko pogorje and Kobarid 1:25000 (and elsewhere) you can clearly see what is meant by Peski (Krn over Peske).

We did this tour twice, first time two days, with the difference that we turned left already at the remains of the barracks (Za lepočami) (I don't know why it only says planina Razor there, because in five minutes you reach the Krn sign on the right). This way you lose less altitude and save a little ascent. And you see quite a bit of history, if the weather is nice, remains of the hospital at Prehodci, Batognica. It is really a nice tour and can be very hot, we felt it last year, when from Savica to Krn it was sunny all the way and the steep ascent over scree to the marker was really "hellish", luckily we were up before noon. And as you wrote, because of the distance it's for a day for exceptionally fit ones, when you look from Bogatinsko sedlo back towards Krn, the summit seems so far ...

I also walked this path last year. It can really be hot, luckily mists accompanied us from Bogatinsko sedlo. Because we looked at all the bunkers along the path, we reached the summit only late afternoon and also slept in the hut. The next morning we watched the sunrise and the Gulf of Trieste, then to Krnsko jezero and on towards Savica. There was also a ten-year-old hiker with us and he says he's going again this year.

Soon I plan to do a circular path from Krnsko jezero to Krn. I would return via Prag or Peske over Prehodci to the hut at Krnska jezera. Interested in the walking time back.

Good three hours. But if you go via Batognjica, which is recommended (although there is a shorter almost flat connection between Krnska škrbina and Batognjsko sedlo) and later turn off the path also to Vrh nad Peski (which is again recommended when you're already there once), with inspecting military trenches and sightseeing you quickly add another hour, rather more.
