Krnica - Veliki Rob - Kucelj

ksena6. 05. 2012 20:53:00
On Saturday we took advantage of the dry weather morning and did a circular path suitable for a half-day walk.
N.Gorica (direction Lokve)- Trnovo - Rijavci....on asphalt road, then partly on gravel and asphalt to Krnica, parked a few 100m above Krnica and continued on foot on asphalt, at the cairn turned right into the forest and joined the marked path to Veliki Rob. The path runs through the forest, crosses a clearing and continues along a very scenic ridge with beautiful views of the Vipava Valley, to Veliki Rob. Short stop, then we continued towards Kuclj. Again on a nice forest path to the mulatjera, along it to the first marker and signpost that directed us left towards Kuclj. The summit was shrouded in fog, so we didn't linger long but descended to its western foothills and continued under Veliki Rob back to the starting point. Nice tour, in good weather offers lavish views.

On Kuclj it was pleasantly spring-like today. On the path already described, there is a lot of wind-fallen trees, but most can be bypassed easily. Apparently it's like that on all other approach paths too.

Yesterday's afternoon hike from Veliki Rob to Kuclj and back was just right for airing out with the fresh air of the Trnovo Plateau and for enjoying lavish views. Both peaks boast the same height of 1237 m. From Veliki Rob to Kuclj the path descends and ascends and incidentally we pick up some elevation meters, which I started to feel on the return. The path is mostly well marked, but I still managed to stray from it on the way to Kuclj. Along the ridge the path occasionally got lost in the grass, but when it turned into the forest, tracking was no problem. From the forest I should have continued along the southern ridge, but a well-visible path through the forest led me to a new logging trail, where I no longer knew how to proceed. Initially I intended right towards the summit rising in front of me, and where I saw the track of one predecessor in the soil. But I changed my mind, and went down the logging trail. It soon joined a narrower forest road that comes from the forester's hut higher in the forest, and continues along the old path to Vrtovina and Črnič. I had gone along the road from the forester's hut years ago, so I correctly continued right downhill and soon reached a junction where the mountain path from Veliki Rob joins. Where I got lost, I couldn't figure out even on the return when I went along the right path that runs along the southern slopes of the Čaven Ridge. Probably I strayed right under the summit where the new logging trail runs. The mountain path actually goes under this summit from the south side and just below the summit also bypasses some fallen trees that were being cleared on the other side.

From the junction the path soon heads towards Kuclj. The lower part of the path was less overgrown than I remembered, so no problems with tracking and passability. But in the thicket my heart stopped soon at the nearby grumbling. From fright I started whistling and hurried on. After exiting the bushes, with ever better views I finally breathed easier and while admiring the flowers reached the top of Kuclj. Despite the fear I returned the same way, as the path along the forest road is too boring.

I ended the day at Kobilnik, a hill above Trnovo, where there is a monument with a tomb dedicated to 256 fallen fighters of the IX Corps. From the monument open lavish views from the Alps to the Adriatic. This time the Julian Alps peaks were in haze, but the sea shone all the way to the Slovenian coast and Venice.

I parked at the end of the asphalt, a few turns above Krnica, where I saw the first direction sign for V. Rob.1

On 1.11.2014 I chose V. Rob and Kucelj from Krnica again for a shorter hike. I took some time to explore where I strayed from the path last time and found that both paths are marked. One goes straight through the forest and ends at a forest logging trail or poorer forest road, the other turns right and begins to descend along the ridge edge.
I chose the path that goes straight and tried to break through to the hilltop at the end of the logging trail. Straight to the top wasn't possible due to fallen trees, so I bypassed it a bit to the left and as I had already foreseen last time, reached the path that goes along the edge and later turns into the forest.
While bypassing the summit I saw a narrow forest road below me, but it wasn't the one I took last time. The forest road leading from the forester's hut is actually a bit lower.
On the return I went along this road to the first bend, at which on the right through felled trees opens a view to Kucelj, on the left a steep path marked with a star ascends steeply. Further on I noticed some faded markers. After a shorter steep ascent I reached a poorer forest road leading to the hilltop with fallen trees. From it a narrower gravel road branches left, which I had seen below me while bypassing the summit. A bit further another path branches right, marked with a star. I followed the star-marked path for a few steps and even climbed a small hill above it, then returned to the path that goes straight and then turns left towards the summit with fallen trees. So I still don't know where the star-marked path leads (maybe to Selovec), although I found one star on V. Rob itself.

On Sunday, 16.8.2015, it had cooled enough for a visit to V. Rob and Kuclj. The temperature was quite pleasant for walking, but the weather became less friendly with every step. Fog on Kuclj and soon after also rain, which I wanted to avoid on the return via the path through the forest. Due to numerous forest logging trails I soon strayed from the right path and wandered more than 1.5 hours on muddy forest roads. In the end I gave up and returned to the starting point and continued on the mountain path that ascends along the edge. Here I already had some problems on the way from V. Rob, as the path was quite overgrown on a few meters. Also at the fallen trees in the forest it was necessary to find passages, as the trail gets lost in undergrowth and windfalls of fallen trees on a few steps. Also just before the junction to the forest road or old path to Vrtovina one had to force a way through the thicket. Last year at this time the paths were much more trodden due to the cold summer than this year, when the heat didn't invite to the heated slopes of the Čaven Ridge.
Despite gloomy weather fresh air on V. Rob invited to continue1

Saturday was just the right day to visit Kuclj and Veliki Rob, only we chose a different starting point, even nicernasmeh.

That there were no distant views to the sea and Julijci I didn't even notice, as I read about these views only at home. The path itself was beautiful, as we started along Srednječavenska, which could be called royal. We left it at the branch for Mala gora, continued towards Kuclj, where we looked back at the walked path and admired the world opening ahead towards Veliki rob. Everywhere karst world, world of pines and junipers. Why look for Julijci when it was already so beautiful there.
Once you climb to Kucelj, you must continue further, as only less than an hour of pleasant walking separates you from V.Rob, a bit of descent and ascent balances out, as the peaks are the same heightnasmeh.

It was said that there is no visit to these peaks, but I saw people climbing both, and it's impossible that the word of the beauty of this world wouldn't spread.
I'm sure it won't be long before we wish for views from these two wonderful peaks againnasmeh.

Already last autumn we set off to this area to walk this path, but we had bad luck as there was a rally from Ajdovščina via Predmeja and Cola exactly that day so we then went from Cola to Sinji vrh. But I had Veliki rob in mind all the time, then @ločanka(thanksnasmeh) described the path so nicely that it was only a question of time when I go up. I started at the quarry and then along Srednječavenska to the branch for Mala gora, there I also turned right and straight up to the hut on Čavn, there after coffee on to Kuclj, from Kuclj to Veliki rob. Back again to Kuclj from the top then instead to Čaven to Mala gora and from there below again along Srednječavenska back to the starting point. A day as you can only wish for above Vipava, sunny and windless. Accordingly there was a visit as there were incredibly many hikers. This tour will have to be repeated in June when it's full of flowers.

Yesterday, 2.4.2019, the day before the weather change to worse, I was offered a tour that I had never done before. From Vitovelj to Čaven above Krnica along the Napoleonic path, which was built by Russian prisoners. Interesting path. Very scenic. The top of Čavn not so much, because of trees on the summit. The path further along the edge to Veliki Rob really nice. Full of flowers on the path. From Veliki Rob we went also to Kuclj and then back the same way, only that we descended to Krnica and past Kopitnik to the starting point. As much as 1250 elevation meters accumulated and 17 km walking. Only one hiker we met on Veliki Rob.

Predmeja (tunnels) - Veliki Rob (Srednječavenska pot) - back via Kuclj and past the hut on Čavnu. It added up to 17 beautiful kilometers, although in the morning it looked like it would be bad since it was still snowing on Col. Luckily the sky over Čavnu cleared and it became a beautiful day. It was blowing a bit but nothing excessive, only on Kuclj real Vipava bora. The Srednječavenska path is really beautiful and whoever is around here won't regret visiting it.
