Yesterday (Wednesday, 5th May). I left the car at the passing place between Križevec and Pusti rovt. To the Kočna saddle it was mostly dry with larger snow patches in some places. The southern slope of Ptičji vrh was also dry all the way to the top. Similar conditions further towards Suha saddle, except that in the forested slopes on the Austrian side there's still quite a lot of snow. The path along the ridge to Krvavka was soaked and slippery. On the Austrian side the snow drifts are huge. The summit was in fog with a few centimeters of wet snow. It started raining, and the south wind was blowing the whole time anyway. I gave up the ascent to Golica, which I had quietly planned, and descended in minimal visibility straight down the grassy ridge towards the hut. At first there was still quite a bit of snow (interesting: more snow to the west than to the east) and it went comfortably, somewhere in the middle the not quite level and wet grasses were covered with just a centimeter or two of whiteness. It was slippery, just in case I grabbed the ice axe and sighed in relief in the lower part before the cableway. The path along the southern slopes of Krvavka towards Pusti rovt is littered with avalanche debris in some places, approximately at the base of the peak, an avalanche carried away about ten meters of path, but no issues. Below Ptičji vrh I was really glad for the grassy eastern ridge, I climbed onto it and in the manner of modern mountain visitors climbed this peak once more. Then along the grassy ridge path, dashing jumping past the white border stones to Kočna saddle and through Pusti rovt to the car. In summer and nice weather this tour is probably an exceptional and panoramic stroll. The natural elements - wind, rain, fog and slippery paths and grasses took away some of that nice uniqueness this time, but certainly enriched it with a bit of magnificent primal charm. That's good too!
