Kum - 1220 m

Ascent to Kum (1220m) - highest peak of Zasavje

Before the traditional Sunday ascent to Kum, which takes place from Trbovlje, we go to check and see this year's conditions.
The climb to Kum undoubtedly belongs to the first league and among Top 5 Slovenian mountain biking goals. From the Trbovlje bridge over Sava it's cca 9km steep ascent on asphalt, at the end another 2km addition on macadam, so for recreational riders and those who don't ride for time, it's more suitable to mount a mountain bike.
The road is relatively nice and wide, quite shady, to the village Dobovec, except at the giant Trbovlje chimney, it doesn't offer many views, but for that you are abundantly rewarded at the top, where a mountain hut stands and an old church, opposite it a large RTV transmitter, which is visible from almost everywhere far away anyway. The ascent is relatively hard or demanding, so I don't recommend it to casual cyclists.
Kum - 1220 m Starting point, parking at Trbovlje railway station, behind the notorious eco-controversial cement plant.1
Kum - 1220 m Coal, once a feature of Zasavje areas.2
Kum - 1220 m Intersection at the bridge over the Sava ... and signs for Kum.3
Kum - 1220 m From the valley, hiking trails also lead to Kum.4
Kum - 1220 m Wide, but soon steep asphalt road.5
Kum - 1220 m Several hairpin bends must be driven to the height of this chimney - 360m.6
Kum - 1220 m The road to Kum is shady, side turn-offs are well marked and you cannot get lost.7
Kum - 1220 m Dobovec - the only larger settlement on the way to the top.8
Kum - 1220 m at the church in Dobovcu - first steeper slope (about 15%)9
Kum - 1220 m in Dobovcu - road intersection above the fire station, the direction to Kum is well marked10
Kum - 1220 m info board about some local curiosities11
Kum - 1220 m already past the Lontovž ski area12
Kum - 1220 m last 2 km on macadam13
Kum - 1220 m view towards the summit14
Kum - 1220 m just below the summit15
Kum - 1220 m Kum - at the mountain hut, behind a free-standing bell tower16
Kum - 1220 m opposite the chapel stands a large RTV transmitter17
Kum - 1220 m back to the valley ... or a little further around18

Trbovlje - Kum & Dobovec – Župa – Čimerno – Zavrate – Jelovo – Radeče – Hrastnik – Trbovlje

End of May is a very suitable time for ascent to Kum, just enough greenery, not hot yet, asphalt is spring-fresh, last 2 km of gravel under the summit are just right compacted so tires don't slip. Well-prepared recreational cyclists sometimes did the about 11 km demanding climb under 1 hour, but better racers only around 40 min, but years take their toll, now have to settle for some 5 min delay over the hour.

If you have the will and time and some curiosity for discovering new places I recommend, at descent in Dobovec turn right towards village Župa, from where continue through above mentioned hamlets all the way to Radeče, on narrow but nice scenic asphalt road, up and down a bit, you'll meet almost no one. There aren't many signs and markers, but at all important junctions there's a suitable signpost.
From Radeče, when you reach Sava, mandatory along the right river bank to Hrastnik, where on the narrow road cars also don't drive (except those few rare locals living there), in Hrastnik from the local Glassworks hall, then just 5 km of wide main road to Trbovlje … and you've done an interesting, nice and scenic loop.

In this video you will enjoy fantastic views that encompass almost half of Slovenia, fairy-tale nature and everything else that the ascent to Kum and descent on forest paths into the valley offers.
