Landslide on the path to Vodnikov dom

So, notice to all who are heading to Vodnikov dom these days. On the path between Studorski preval and Vodnikov dom there is a large landslide about halfway along the path. Caution and will are needed and it can be overcome. We hope the rocks will be removed as soon as possible.

On the PZS site it says that the Rudno polje - Vodnikov dom path is closed due to landslide. Does anyone remember what happened to the Austrian boy last year when they went to Mangart on the closed path? zmeden

No doubt the landslide can be crossed! Probably not even too difficult, the question is just who should tackle it and whose responsibility it is if the attempt fails in any way. So, the path is officially closed, crossing the landslide is accordingly dangerous, so it might be wise to suggest alternatives to this otherwise fastest and most common approach, which leads from Rudno polje, over Studorski preval, under Tošec, to Vodnikov dom.

To Vodnikov dom (if you want to go there) you can also get from the "lower floors": from the hut at Vojah (good 3 hours); from Kovinarska koča in Krma over Bohinjska vratca (4 hours); from planina Blato (possibly past Planina pri Jezeru), over Planina v Lazu, over Lazovski and Jezerski preval (good 5 hours).

Perhaps this unfortunate landslide can be used to discover something new on the way to Triglav (I mention it because it's the final goal of most passers-by)!

It would be nice if this notice was also somewhere else besides just the PZS site, since we don't check that site for every path to the mountains. We crossed the tunnel anyway, like some others, some turned back before it and got angry because there was no prior warning.
We should warn about such things also at starting points with signs, not just on websites.

After the publication about the landslide and path closure it was possible to read on most mountaineering websites. Of course this is not enough, as not everyone has access to the internet, foreigners may
not even find their way around our websites or understand the warnings.

I completely agree that at least when closing such important (read frequent) paths it would be necessary to provide information (at least also) at the most crowded starting points and somewhere in between. But this is of course a matter that needs to be settled centrally (PZS), while currently, if I'm correctly informed, the PD that maintains it is responsible for securing and closing the damaged path (at least that's how it was understood when closing the Slovenska pot on Mangart). Of course it's not necessary that the PD maintains all paths that connect to the damaged(=closed) one and from this comes a possible problem in organizing the placement of warnings at the starts ... No point philosophizing: it'll be good if we all learn something from this event and do better next time! Until then we'll have to rely on luck again, which isn't necessarily the smartest but certainly the most commonly used! smile

By the way, spoty, is there currently a warning sign right before the landslide (on both sides)? And if so, in which languages?

There is no warning sign anywhere before the landslide from either side. As for publications on the net, some of us don't browse all sites, and there was no warning on this site. It was published only after I wrote the warning on this site myself.

Maybe (I hope) two days later the situation is already different and warnings are posted (of course I didn't mean the warning signs literally).

Otherwise, the Commission for Paths of the Alpine Association of Slovenia has "closed" the path (=published a message on the PZS site) already on 26.5. The same day the information (with added photos of the landslide) was republished on gore-ljudje.net. From there on, the PD Gorje will probably have to roll up their sleeves, which (according to the path cadastre and list of maintainers available to me) is responsible for maintaining this path. Usually I'm not too critical of the work of diligent volunteers, but here it just seems to me that from 26.5. to 1.6. enough time has passed to write clear warnings on both sides of the landslide! At least to relieve responsibility, if not for other reasons ... Hm. Namely, with the new law, which (even without subordinate acts) came into force on 1 June, responsibility for maintainers is apparently much more concretely defined and also sanctioned.

Judging from the photos I've seen, the landslide is quite extensive. First they should take care of multilingual warning signs at Rudno polje and Vodnik hut, assess the stability of the rock in the break, secure it if possible, and rebuild the path with the only solution, to make a nice passage right next to the wall with smaller rocks and leave the larger boulders as a souvenir, or lesson from nature that world environmentalists need to get more practical and not just thrash empty straw at conferences - if we're not already a bit late for that?! Here I will praise the maintainer of Hribi.net for the constructive contribution to the News section! I mean the "news" titled: "How to get to Vodnikov dom over the rocky landslide?"

The path is still closed and nothing suggests they'll open it soon.
