Yesterday my long-planned wish came true, to ride a loop around Golaki through Trnovo Forest and climb with the MTB to the very top.
I start the tour in Gozd pod Sinjim vrhom, continue at the chapel right towards Zadlog to the pass. There, after a few hundred m at the larger intersection of three roads, I take the right forest road, which cuts through the northern part of the Trnovo Forest plateau. After 31 km of nice mountain road, at Ledenica a marked 2h SW path branches off along the Golaki ridges, quite uncrowded, long with difficult karst rocky terrain, overgrowth, logs, short 3m cliffs, but the most beautiful approach to the heart of Golaki. On this trail I dragged the bike the whole way, carried it, climbed over cliffs; in between only a couple of times 20m rides, where you have to cross quite a few intermediate peaks and descents to saddles with a narrow path, before spotting the real Mali Golak, quite strenuous! Also from the top to Iztokova hut there was no riding, karst rocky terrain so that my shoe got stuck in the rocky crevice a few times. Next, a not too short return awaited me through the southern edge of Trnovo Forest this time. At Predmeja I refill the empty bottle from the friendly local, hunter Toni. The chat turns to old times 50-60 years ago, when carabinieri went to the taverns of Trnovo Forest and rubbed their boots with the best local prosciutto so they shone better. Back then they were valued and esteemed gentlemen. On the plateaus under Golaki now hired Bosnian loggers with branded domestic horses haul wood in autumn for sale to Italy.
The tour to Golaki is three-quarter-day with asc+traverse 60km, over 800m elev on path; I recommend at marked path spot Ledenica continuing straight on the road around to Iztokova hut and from there to the top, much easier, shorter. Golaki is an extremely wild area, beautiful nature; per the hunter's tale in this part of the territory about 15 bears and other diverse game are permanently stationed, in fog you get lost quickly here, because in the heart of Golaki even in broad daylight I myself didn't know where the real Golak is.

, topic - mountain biking -! I also doubt anyone has described the other approach variant to Golaki yet. So for a loop tour you need to go by car along the road as to Iztokova hut, there at the junction straight to Ledenica and Smrekova draga, where right by the road we spot markers signpost on a tree. Marked trail to summit called Čez škrbino, described online. Part of the team or one goes back by car to Iztokova hut, ascends to top and waits for mates.

Another weather-climate peculiarity from Trnovski gozd is that the slopes of Cavna, at similar height as Iztokova hut, are much warmer in winter due to sea influence and possible snowfalls melt quickly. Comparatively, the area inside the plateau at Iztokova hut has sharp, cold mountain climate, with more snow falling too. Hostess said by phone they had 1m snow in winter and temps down to -16°C!. Most illustrative growth of weather-geographic conditions shows in the heart of the park depression Smrekova draga, where in the hollow temps even in summer don't exceed 10°C. Below nothing grows except resilient bushes, a bit higher only spruce forest, higher on the warm dwarf beech, all at 200m alt. Hut open from Friday afternoon to Sunday, in summer longer too.
