Mali Karman / Monte Cuarnan

Yesterday I was hanging around in Friuli and also jumped to Little Karman. Starting point Montenars, southern path 714. The sign said 2.10 h, I needed about half less. Most to Little Karman actually go from the west side, where you can drive to the alpine pasture. Descended the ascent path.
Mali Karman / Monte Cuarnan on the southern slopes a lot of rose hips can be found1
Mali Karman / Monte Cuarnan the summit is already appearing2
Mali Karman / Monte Cuarnan behind also Veliki Karman3
Mali Karman / Monte Cuarnan some gentle slopes above the Friulian plain4
Mali Karman / Monte Cuarnan chapel on the summit5

Mali Karman (1372m)
Yesterday according to the description in Andrej Mašera's book Western Julian Alps we did an afternoon circular ascent or traverse to Mali Karman from the parking in Jouf hamlet. (Access via old road between Videm and Humin). Paths (714, 715 and 716) completely dry, well maintained, freshly marked, even around fresh rockfall. On top around chapel on 8.3.2014 still some snow patches. E.Pischiutti shelter just below summit got new roof last year and now decent building.

Ladylike little hill with even more ladylike views and interesting amphitheatrical south face. Ridge path 714 towards the summit, where the ridge narrows a lot and opens views into gullies on both sides, exposed spot. Everything else (CAI 715 and 716) non-exposed, easy and fun.
Climbing in Falesie del Glemine officially not allowed (pic 11).

Little Karman surprised us nasmeh. Not so much the summit but the path from *below*. We never expected such smooth and pleasant paths.

So we started from Humin (Gemona) and ascended towards the summit on pleasant path 716. Higher up at the fork we chose the left path past bivouac Ricovero Pischiutta, crossed the ridge and summit, and returned on the right. No snow here anymore, which doesn't apply to Great Karman and its ridge. There's still quite some white there, but the Venetian plain will soon take it. Definitely recommended path nasmeh.

Park in the old town center at one of the public parking spots. Most are private, clearly marked velik nasmeh. To the starting point, or first path signs, go on the paved sidewalk through a short tunnel. You see it on the right when arriving by car almost to the parking. Then another few 100 m to start.

Parking coordinates: 46°16'31.5"N 13°08'30.5"E

Our path 716, later at the junction we took path 715 towards the bivouac.1

In the old town there's also a parking garage, but the parking on the terrace above it is larger and free. Anyway, the parking mentioned by @bagi is usually not too crowded, about five minutes away.

In Gemona, next to the church, there's an interesting earthquake museum, 100-200 m ahead from the church towards the center, showing the 1976 earthquake in pictures and words, epicenter not far from here at Monte San Simeone. A bit further, on the other side of the old core, remains of the church collapsed in the earthquake.

Beautiful trip, path without highlights, summit and upper descent a bit too crowded for us loners. After the tour to dear Humin for a walk and crib viewing. Great day nasmeh

For this approach to Little Karman we chose last year's route of the T3C trail marathon (Trail 3 Castelli … KLIK ), which runs every year through the hills around Gemona. We adjusted it a bit and got a nice circular variant, 20 km with 1500 m ascent. Start and finish on the edge of Artegna.

First steep climb to the ridge where Monte Faeit and Monte Campeon reign. Initially not the friendliest path improves soon. At the other end of the ridge down to the saddle and gently on along the slopes to Little Karman. Return past the renovated hut to the paraglider takeoff, then across Bulons village all the way to the Waterfalls Path along the Orvenco river. It goes through an interesting gorge full of waterfalls cascading over mostly artificial barriers. Gorge ends in Artegna, right before the start. Nice tour for cooler days nasmeh.

Start coordinates: 46.248153, 13.158545

We parked on the outskirts of Artegna at a smaller parking lot1
Along the narrow road we continued towards the forest up to the junction for M.Faeit. Up to here the marks are poorly visible2
Soon on the steep, stone-paved path, remains of last year's running track T3C appear3
Jambor (cross) on M.Faeitu4
They are economical. LED lighting, at the base of the mast there are accumulators and a generator5
Further on follows a branch to Monte Campeon. It is something small from the direction6
The summit apart from the view has nothing special, but it is artificially levelled and has some entrenchments7
On descent to the saddle many beautiful hides appear, Italian Roccolo. They are characteristic of these areas. The sign explains their role8
One of the hides. In them they caught birds for food. Today unacceptable, in the past survival9
Junction to Mali Karman in the saddle. There were quite a few cars parked here.10
Along the path there is plenty of dogwood, which doesn't have the right taste yet.11
Soon we rise above the forest line. In the background, the almost bare ridge of Breginjski Stol.12
Mali Karman, still far above us.13
View back at part of the traversed path14
We are already right below the summit, which however was deceptively close all the time.15
The summit was well visited, most came from the direction of Gemona.16
View of the bare ridge of Veliki Karman.17
Elio Pischiutti shelter, renovated and strongly, strongly supported.18
View towards Gemona and the upper parking lot.19
Here we turn left.20
In the background, the traversed Monte Campeon and the saddle from which we ascended to Karman.21
Cross at an important intersection. The direction is past it.22
Another marker of the T3C running trail, this time the longer version.23
Even in these parts, the wind felled trees, but the paths here are already cleared.24
After a short walk through the village of Bulons, we reached the Waterfall Trail.25
Once in a while, you have to cross the stream like this.26
The river Torrente Orvenco was obviously torrential. There were plenty of regulatory barriers.27
There is constant moisture, which is evident from the moss and the chill that went to the bones.28
The gorge is interesting and worth seeing. At high water levels, it is probably difficult to pass.29
Cascade after cascade.30
Even for the beautiful pools human hand has taken care.31
One of the larger waterfalls. In my estimation it is about 10 m high.32
In between the path rises and bypasses the impassable part of the gorge. In the background is Gemona.33
Conclusion of this path in Artegna. To the starting point there are only a few meters left.34

As usual (today fifth time) from Jouf up. This village high under Karman has crept under my skin, as soon as it warms a bit I visit it by bike from Humin up. Warm-up to viewpoint Zuc de Cros, then a bit higher at junction right and after short flatter traverse steeply up to the ridge. Along it to church Del Redenetore, upper part of path snowy, track hard and icy, but it was possible to step safely along the whole track or its edge without aids wearing crampons. To summit cold but no wind, views somewhat impaired by hazy clouds and fog. Up top found lee corner, tied my soul there, then quick descent as it started to pull. To paraglider takeoff it pulled nicely, also cold, as soon as under ridge it calmed. To junction where I turned right uphill not far, from there to village or car same. Today first time alone on this path, first time only my car at parking, also first time whole dear day no one anywhere, not even in village. Paths normally passable, snow no obstacle, and thaw will probably take even that in few days. Beautiful spots, if stars don't say otherwise surely not last time nasmeh

We visited Little Karman in the past via various paths and time for something new. Finger on map created new, length-rich and especially scenic route nasmeh. Quite some elevation too. For start we chose Humin exactly the epicenter of the destructive earthquake from recent past. This time only we two shivering from cold and quickly off on the path.

Ascent on path 716 all to takeoff and past hut Elio Pischiutti to Little Karman. Continued along ridge and lower at yellow-red mark turned left to barely visible path Sentiero di Redentore. It leads over steep slopes of Karman to side ridge with summit Monte Duou and further to church Santa Maria Maddalena. A bit further on there's hidden but marked turn left to Vedronza stream. Crossed it over Roman bridge and after ridiculous ascent on other side found ourselves at start of Perst village.

After short break among many starting branches found path 730 and headed through valley to saddle Foredor. Quite far as need to cross numerous gullies. Final ascent to saddle keeps receding with endless switchbacks, but we won velik nasmeh. Followed not-too-easy descent on path 713 back to Humin. More in photostory ...

Start coordinates: 46.275663, 13.141794
We park under the church Santa Maria Assunta and set off to the tunnel.1
On the opposite side of the tunnel a signpost directs us left up the hill.2
The path is gentle, very hollowed-out, still shady and uncrowded so early.3
The first sun rays greet us much higher up and because of the cold we are delighted by them.4
View back to the densely populated Gemono.5
Along the path …6
Just above the forest line another signpost awaits us. We choose the left path past the take-off site.7
We ascend a rough, washed-out pathlet. Due to the beautiful views we don't notice it at all.8
The take-off site is already behind us. For now only the clouds have successfully risen :)9
The marker on Mali Karman is still far ahead …10
First we reach the unmaintained shelter Elio Pischiutti.11
In the lower rooms there is a day room with a typical fireplace, upstairs there are bunks.12
A bit higher we see the ridge of Veliki Karman for the first time.13
We are already right below the summit. Some clouds do not disturb the views.14
Due to the still cold wind we immediately continue the descent on the opposite side of the ridge.15
View back at Mali Karman.16
Beautiful ridge :) We hiked it on the Alta via CAI Gemona path in 2018.17
This time we explore a bit lower. In front of us is Monte Duou, which we will also cross.18
We leave the ridge of Mali Karman. Slowly we will circle it completely to the left.19
Over steep slopes friendly markers lead us. We follow the Sentiero di Redentore path.20
Church Santa Maria Maddalena. It is visibly tilted and unsightly concreted.21
Still turning left and simultaneously descending towards the bed of the Vedronza stream.22
Everywhere is full of crocuses, especially beautiful in the shaded areas.23
We follow the yellow-red markers. It will be so all the way to the hamlet Pers.24
Lowest point of the descent, Roman bridge over the Vedronza stream.25
A rest follows on the other side. To here from the stream bed a considerable amount of steepness still needs to be overcome.26
From Pers we turn left again, specifically onto path 730 towards the Foredor saddle.27
The terrain on this side of the stream is much more rugged than on the already walked parts of the path.28
The saddle looks quite close, but quite a few deep ravines lead to it.29
In one of them there are collapsed safety devices. The new passage variant is routed lower.30
Right above us is the ridge from Veliki Karman to Lanež.31
Foredor saddle with typical marker. But I don't know why there's a rooster on top :)32
We leave the saddle towards Gemona and then only descend further.33
Along the path …34
Soon we reach the upper edge of Gemona. We still stick to the left direction.35
This is the church near which we have the car parked. We complete the loop.36
Santa Maria Assunta from the 12th century. Here was the epicenter of the earthquake in 1976.37
The interior is beautiful and powerful, no consequences of the earthquake are visible.38
One of the side altars.39
Memorial for the devastating earthquake that also razed our border villages.40
GPS track of the walked path. It came to 22 km and 1900 elevation meters.41

Yesterday, for the first time on this beautiful viewpoint, but the drive and the path to it also greatly contribute to making the day and the trip even nicer. Really, the drive through the Kanal Valley and further through the Julian landscape always excites me a lot, especially now when some peaks are still nicely snow-covered and beautifully adorn this spring landscape. The views into the waters of Bela and Tilment are something you simply can't miss on this path, so the two-hour drive passed like a flash, but without exaggeration.

On the top, a wonderful view of Great Karman and its ridge to Lanzež and further, Kanin mountains, Triglav, Kanjavec, Krn, all listed under Julian Alps. Only Triglav shyly hid so you almost didn't know where to look for it. On the other side, views to the Carnic Alps and Dolomites, even the highest peak Antelao showed part of itself. In the distance over the Friulian plain, the sea glittered too. On the descent from the saddle, we marveled at the huge rock debris under G. Karman, which blocked even the upper part of the concrete road.

On the return, we drove to the Ponte di Braulins bridge to see the crystal water and vast gravel beds of the Tilment river more closely, from where beautiful views open to the Karmans. Really a perfect day!

ločanka,
beautifully and vividly written, really beautiful spots. Shame you didn't jump to that little church too, quarter-hour walk from parking in Braulins. On the other side of that beautiful bridge is the village Braulins, small parking under the hill, there is the start for Monte Brancot. Ten to fifteen minutes' walk higher is the church, from where nice view to Humin, Tilment, with luck you see griffons, bearded vultures often soaring over Brancot. This is the church worth seeing:
