Meli Košuta and Plešivec from Šajda (Geological Trail)

From Medvode to Medvodje via Šajda could be a subtitle. Anyway, I couldn't find a description of this trail here, but it's worth pointing it out. With PD Medvode today early via Ljubelj to Šajda saddle (starting point also for Obir). From here first following signs for Sedlo Potok, then Geotrail and Meli Košuta. It's a geological trail renovated in 2007 by Slovensko planinsko društvo Celovec which takes us through seemingly impassable scree and fallen trees without major difficulties to the border ridge of Košuta, a bit below Tolsta Košuta (right) or Meli Košuta (left). This part is really worth seeing. The cloudy, windy cover directed us from Tolsta Košuta to Meli Košuta (incorrectly named Mala Košuta in the description on this page). A nice border ridge path leads to it, from it some descent, then ascent to neighboring Plešivec. From there descent to Zgornja Dolga Njiva and to the hut on Spodnja Dolga Njiva, where a shower caught us. Then a walk to Medvodje, where the bus was waiting and a good 7 hours of hiking were done. If tied to your own vehicle, you'd have to return the same way, I think no circular route. You could choose Koča pod Košuto (Koschutahaus) as starting point, but I'm sure you'd miss the nice scenic part. The path from start to Sedlo Potok is nicely exposed in the central part, even somewhat less pleasant than the scree over Meli, but no major issues. From Šajda to Sedlo Potok we took under two hours, from there to Orlovo sedlo a bit less, of course consider it was a group. To Meli Košuta then about 15 minutes and to Pršivec another good half hour, for descent to Medvodje under two. Pasture open, good offer, people friendly. No usual crowds due to weather today.

This area is really worth seeing. Rarely is nature so playful as in the Meli of Košuta.
Only the mention of the name bothered me (or maybe I live in the wrong conviction). The area under the V-wall of Tolste Košute is called Meli (scree - emphasis on the last syllable). In dialect pronunciation it's Mela, which is also the basis for the German name. Mala Košuta (1740 m) is a less important peak at the end of Dolga Njiva.

This with names is interesting, yes. The name of the less important peak as the predecessor says is marked on our maps as M. Košuta, from which we all conclude it's Mala Košuta. On the signs (6th picture from the end) it's Mela Koschuta or Meli Košuta, pointing towards this little peak and the path leads there too. So probably both apply: Meli are the northern slope of Košuta, i.e. geological trail, and the peak above is also called Meli Košuta, judging by the signs. That's how I explained it at least.

@tones: I too was convinced that this less important peak is called Mala Košuta. However, on my map it just says M. Košuta which can mean something else too. But when standing at Orlovo sedlo, the signs say German Mela Koschuta, Slovenian Meli Košuta!

Was at the sea, so last week didn't deal with elevation issues.
On the website of Slovenski PD from Celovec it says this:

MELI:
The only hiking trail cared for by SPD Celovec is the trail through Meli under Tolsta Košuta in Karavanke.

geological trail GEOTRAIL MELI under Tolsta Košuta

Meli is located under the cliffs of Tolsta Košuta. With the name Meli our ancestors managed symptomatic perception of the landscape, and there is no term that names this unique mountain world more meaningfully. Meli - related to mel, to crumble, scree - means "crushed" and very vividly marks the crumbling of the rock face we can observe. Already in ancient times pilgrims walked through Meli from Carinthia to Brezje.

More about Meli can be read on the page http://www.planinci.at/poti/poti_koroska.htm
I think it's clear enough from this what Meli are. M. Košuta can remain Mala Košuta. That sign can't be controversial either, as the same directs us to the geological trail (Geotrail) and to "Meli Košuta".

Interesting.eek Thanks for the idea. As a geologist I'll head out on the trail as soon as I find time.

Today I went on this trail, which is really full of geological curiosities. Report, description and explanation: http://bojanambrozic.wordpress.com/2013/10/05/geoloska-pot-meli-kosuta/
