Today I walked to Mirna gora. Weather forecast didn't promise much "fun" but turned out meteorologists are dozing a bit! Started in Komarni vas via Gač, Pogorelca, Škrilj, past hut to top of Mirna gora. Hut open daily (except Mon and Tue). Up and down in 5 hours with snack in Dom!

Members of PD Šmarje pri Jelšah visited Mirna gora and its surroundings on St. Martin's Saturday. They were joined by hikers from Jezersko and a local guide from Črnomelj, to whom special thanks go for the excellent leading of the hike. The hike started in Planina village (where Kočevarji once lived) with a tour of the village, then via shepherd and forest educational path to the top of Mirna gora, and on the return along traces of the former forest railway. Despite the unfriendly weather forecast, luck accompanied us. Raincoats, umbrellas and spare clothes luckily stayed dry.
The end of the hike was in a pleasant Bela Krajina zidanc, as befits "Martinovo"jezik.
Nice mountaineering greeting!

This time the Pondeljkovci, the retired group of PD Škofja Loka, went to Kočevsko into the wilderness of Kočevje Germans, who settled or were almost forcibly relocated into the wilderness of Kočevje forests. They came with families, wagons, livestock. First they had to find their place under the sun. They cleared forests and founded about 40 villages. They were Roman Catholics and built churches in the new villages. This happened in the 14th and 15th centuries. They found water sources - water was not lacking here. There was little arable land, but they had enough livestock, pigs, poultry. Many were engaged in charcoal burning. In five hundred years their language adapted and they developed their own dialect. Already by the end of the 1900s the exodus around the world began. The crisis came in 1941, when they were partly forcibly resettled to Styria - their villages were burned and destroyed by Italians, including churches and cemeteries. Their homeland of almost six centuries disappeared and after WW2 they scattered around the world. Nature did its part. Their villages were overgrown by forest. We find only ruins and in the forest fruit trees still bloom in spring.

Our main goal was Dom na Mirni gori - 1000m asl. We drove a long way on macadam through Kočevje forests. Initially we walked together. Midway, part of the group went steeply up to the hut on Mirna gora. The rest went around and only after one hour reached the hut behind the faster group. The hut was opened just for us and they prepared a good hot snack for us. The bus was waiting up there for us. We had a nice time. Sometimes it was quite windy. Paths were dry. We had fun.
We must stop in Žužemberk for a coffee.1
