Monte Altissimo di Nago is a panoramic peak that concludes the Monte Baldo range to the north above Lake Garda. It is 2079 m high and accessible from several directions. The easiest access is from the upper station of the gondola from Malcesine, and tourists make good use of it. We chose a much nicer circular path from the hamlet near Bretonica . Markings greet us already at the parking lot, and first we follow the signs to the Monte Varagno peak. They turn into marking 650 and later into 624. Monte Varagna lies right by the path and is a WW1 memorial site. The ascent to it took us 10 minutes. Before reaching this peak, we crossed the Malga Campei pasture about half an hour earlier. Rarely any pasture has such an excellent viewpoint. In the summer months, they offer full hospitality services including overnight stays. Unfortunately, it was already closed during our visit. The ascent to Monte Altissimo follows a gentle, easy path, and soon we were at its summit. The summit is nothing special, but it is an excellent viewpoint. Nearby there are lots of trenches and caverns from WW1. Everything is riddled with holes. Obviously, there was a strong military base here, which is not surprising given the view. Just below the summit is the pleasant hut Rifugio Damiano Chiesa. It lives mostly off tourists and is open as long as the gondola from the valley runs. At it are signposts for a thousand and one directions, and here we chose the path to the saddle Bocca Paltrane and further to the Malga Campo pasture and Monte Campo peak. The path is pleasant, descending grassy slopes all the way to the pasture. The ascent to Monte Campo from there required some ingenuity to avoid stepping in cow pats . They were still grazing on the pasture, but the view from the summit to the valley rewarded all the effort . For the descent, we continued in the direction of marks 650 to the starting point. They took us via a wonderful panoramic traverse path to the Malga di Sotto pasture. With that, we closed the loop and in the next half hour reached the start. The described path is mostly very scenic and pleasant. There is never too much steepness anywhere, and it makes a nice loop around Monte Altissimo di Nago. It is one of those you gladly repeat . Some useful data: Start: hamlet near Bretonica … 45°49''19.0"N / 10°56''24.7"E (Google Maps_Android) Path length: 20 km / Ascent on path: 1400 m Duration: 7.30 hours

We always gladly return to places around Lake Garda, especially in these gloomy autumn days. There the climate is different, there is more sun, temperatures are pleasanter. There are plenty of hills, both nearby and far away, and we won't run out for a long time . We usually park by Lake Lago di Ledro, which is an excellent starting point for all directions. There are also a shop, a pharmacy and plenty of bars, so we don't need anything more. On the first day, we usually choose some hill on the way from home, and this time it was Monte Altissimo di Nago starting from the village of Festa. Years ago we did a loop exactly from Festa, so this time we took the opposite direction. We ascended to the peak past the Malga Campo pasture, where the grazing season had already ended. The Rif. Damiano Chiesa hut just below the peak was also closed, although there were lots of hikers on the summit plateau. We returned in the direction of Monte Varagna peak and Malga Campei pasture. This one was surprisingly open, probably due to the large number of visitors. We too were quickly tempted and gladly stopped at the unexpected tavern . We were served promptly and the prices were completely normal. Satisfied, we continued and a bit lower joined the morning path. The last two kilometres of the return followed the same route as in the morning, and soon we were back at the start. Nice hike. Starting point coordinates (Festa): 45.8219808N, 10.9399625E
