Monte Carone – on Italian battle positions above Garda

Above Garda everything is full of WW1 remnants. Along the peaks around there ran the demarcation positions of Austria-Hungary and Italy. Monte Carone was Italian and due to its exceptional view extremely important.

There are several paths to it, we did the one from the village Pregasina and with ascent to the summit along the path * Sentiero Alpino Bertolotti Elio *. In between we also climbed Monte Lacio and Monte Vivo, which have a direct view of Lake Garda. These two are also full of First World War remnants.

When you walk in these hills you can't marvel enough at how much of it there is everywhere. We met two who were combing a meadow with a metal detector hoping to find something from those times. Apparently there used to be soldiers' accommodation barracks there and something still turns up.

We did the descent approximately along the access direction, although from the top an extremely interesting secured path appeared with deep views between mighty rocks. Later I found out that it's the path * Sentiero Agostino Tosi *, but unfortunately no time for it. Let something remain for next time nasmeh.

Starting point is the village Pregasina, parking is located under the church right at the end of the narrow streets. Coordinates are: 45°51''01.6"N / 10°49''26.9"E

Monte Carone is a 1621 m high peak near Lago di Ledro lake. We visited it already last year, this time we went to it via another path. Besides it we planned to hike the steep military Tosi path, noticed already on the first visit. Since we don't like repeating, this time we chose the starting point in the village Pre, about 20 minutes away from Lake Garda. We parked at the large parking lot in front of the market in the lower part of the village. No signs for the path here yet, they are on the opposite side of the bridge over the stream. The first street towards the hill leads here, as do the second and third.

We followed the signs for path 421. We plunged into the steepness on a partly concreted, partly poorly asphalted narrow road. We thought it was a bit more arranged access to the pasture, as is usual around here. But we were greatly mistaken. This is the only access to the village Leano and even a Panda 4x4 is almost too wide a car for it. The surprise was complete when one slowly drove past us eek.

After touring the village the path led us to the pasture Malga Vil. Right after it we turned right onto the branch marked 114 and a while later at the next junction onto 113. All together it's a former military mule track and accordingly pleasant and even. In this direction you also get to the summit of Monte Carone the fastest.

From the summit this time we descended along the already viewed steep military Tosi track. Again we could only marvel at how they managed to route this path. It elegantly overcomes all natural obstacles and is richly secured at all difficult spots. Whoever is around here should definitely hike it. We returned to the starting point via the summit Cima Traversole, saddle Passo Nota and hut Baita B. Segala. All in all it was a bit roundabout, but we saw a lot and got ideas for next time nasmeh.

Some useful data:

Starting point: Pre ... 45°51'57.7"N / 10°47'27.1"E (Google Maps_Android)
Path length: 29 km / Ascent: 1700 m
Duration: 9 hours

Village Pre. It is located along the main road between Lake Garda and Lake Lago di Ledro1
All three narrow streets in the direction of the hill lead to the bridge and the first path markers2
View back at the village3
This path provides the only access to the village Leano. Later the surface is much worse, but Pandas still drive here4
Part of the village Leano. I counted at least 15 houses5
They also have a little church. The original was built already in the 16th century6
Interior of the chapel7

Remnants from WW1 are used for the monument11

Sentiero Tosi elegantly overcomes all natural obstacles14
Despite the steepness there is nowhere a feeling of exposure15

Hut Fratelli Pedercini, good ten minutes below the Passo Nota saddle17
In the hut and its surroundings everything is full of such inventions :)18
He, he .... mountain solarium :)19
Upper hut, Rifugio Alpini. It is far from matching the charm of the lower hut20
For shooting goats :)21
Baita B. Segala, another remnant of WW1 that has gained new life. Pleasant and scenic.22
Monte Carone from path 421 past Baita B. Segala23
The path also leads under overhangs24
At the pass Passo Guil we turned towards the mountain pasture Malga Vil25
Malga Vil was basking in the sun on the return. No more livestock, the pasture has closed its doors for this year26

We have been to Monte Carone a few times already, but it can be approached via different paths. This time we tackled it quite broadly and connected several surrounding peaks into one complete tour. Each is interesting in itself, so I chose Monte Carone as the title theme only because of the highest elevation velik nasmeh.

We set off from Pregasina, a village above Lake Garda. The initial part followed the road marked 422B, then we quickly turned onto the ridge above the lake. Here the path becomes a trail marked 422A. The steepness increases, the views too, and everything is of military origin. Caves and remains of structures reveal the front line where Austrians and Italians fought. No wonder, as with such views they had everything under control. The highest point is called Punta Larici, which is popular for taking various selfies with a beautiful backdrop.

The next scenic point was the peak Cima Mughera. We had visited it years ago from Limone sul Garda via the extremely steep path 136, this time arriving via the much gentler 130. We continued to the Passo Guil saddle, then along the military road 421 to the turnaround point at the next saddle Bocca dei Fortini. Path 105 finally turned us towards Monte Carone. To the summit we went via the attractive military access with lots of cables, which is definitely worth visiting nasmeh. The summit has an interesting marker, the highest point is another hundred meters ahead along the ridge.

We returned via a different direction and visited another nice viewpoint Punta di Mois. This peak is particularly prominent from the lower road where we had walked a little earlier. The path to it was once even marked, now one needs to watch for the faint but still traceable trail. From there it was just the return to the starting point. That was about 6 km, following 422. It is a mix of forest paths and gravel roads, which brought us all the way back to the start. We had a great day, full of sun, beautiful views and colorful autumn nasmeh. More in the photo story…

Starting point coordinates (Pregasina):45.8505756N, 10.8242561E
We drive into Pregasina, which has quite a few parking spaces for such a small place. All are free.1
All paths lead in the same direction, but ours will be the one marked 422B a bit later.2
This is the main fork. We continue left, we will return right.3
The pleasant macadam is just right for morning warm-up.4
Soon we turn left onto the ridge via Sentiero della Cresta. The path is EE difficulty.5
Nothing bad, just more strenuous. The trail is broadly eroded.6
Deep vistas follow one after another. Below are structures where lemons were grown.7
View towards Riva del Garda and Torbole8
Good that the army set up the passages :)9
One of the numerous caverns10
The current path also goes through some of them11
We move like this all the time ...12
The highest point of the ridge, Punta Larici. Here photos are mainly taken of cyclists with raised bikes13
Also the personal ID14
The view is really beautiful. Only the morning cloudiness slightly spoils it15
The next goal is Cima Mughera16
Never seen before, the beds are still in their place :)17
The path is fully equivalent to some more alpine variant18
Only the views are a shade different19
We feel absolutely no strain, everything is interesting20
Among the rocky outcrops, the narrow path is barely noticeable21
Super day, hiking is pure pleasure :)22
Probably a former military facility, now locked23
Comfort with a capital C :)24
We continue towards the upper sign25
Military road that cyclists use very gladly26
Emil, what mountain is that up there?27
Punta di Mois. We will visit it on the return28
On the side we visit a few more rock shelters29
We have walked this road many times already, but it is never too much for us.30
Baita Segala, nicely maintained shelter with the obligatory fireplace.31
At the saddle Bocca dei Fortini we turn the direction of travel and slowly ascend along the 105.32
We stick to the 105. It's EE again, but more to scare tourists than due to any special difficulty.33
From somewhere, unwanted fog has sneaked in.34
First steel cables...35
The date says it all.36
Attractive passages line up one after another.37
Additionally secured carved steps.38
View back. It's demanding, but still comfortable and under control.39
Signature of the defenders of this area.40
Beautiful trail, I recommend :)41
Towards the top the terrain flattens, and variant 131 joins.42
Summit monument.43
This one is of a special kind, made from military remnants.44
On the descent from the summit we also follow 105, this time on the opposite side.45
Autumn chestnuts.46
The descent is comfortable, running in numerous hairpin bends.47
Here we turn towards another summit that is not indicated on the signposts.48
This is the viewpoint Punta di Mois, which was once even marked.49
We descend to the road leading from the valley to Passo Guil.50
Info board with numbered engraved trails.51
Only the descent along 422 back to the starting point awaits us.52
This one is also panoramic. Below the village Pregasina is already visible.53
Rarely seen, a very special sign for two-wheeled racers.54
Photo finish...55
We are already at the starting point by Chiesa di San Giorgio. Parking is right below it.56
It was a nice day. We hiked 18 km and 1400 m elevation gain.57
