Monte di Ragogna is an isolated peak above the left bank of the Tilment River (Tagliamento) northwest of San Daniele del Friuli. In World War I, it hosted artillery units that after the collapse of the defensive line on the Soča protected the retreat of the Italian army to the west. Remains of the artillery fortifications (Ragogna Bassa and Alta) are preserved and on display for visitors. A ridge path runs along Ragogna, along the remains of trenches you can also walk its southern part, and an asphalted road leads to the summit. We started on path No. 813 from San Pietro, which lies on the western edge of Ragogna. We ascended through the forest, crossed the road and soon reached the ridge, which in total measures less than 5 km. The path is well marked and easy to follow, secured with a fence in the central part, in between there are some viewpoints revealing mainly western and northern horizons (Carnic Alps, hills of their foothills and Julian foothills), and the meanders of the intertwined channels of the Tilment River. At the inn on the summit (transmitter) we turned around and returned via the road and paths along the trenches to the lower artillery unit, it wasn't far to the starting point anymore. The path is not demanding, some caution is needed only on exposed sections, which are secured.
