The starting point for the tour is Val Tochel, best reached from Forgaria via the Prat plateau (Altopiano del monte Prat). You can also get here from Avasinis via Cuel di Forchia saddle, but since the road between Val Tochel and Cuel di Forchia is damaged, I advise against the route from Avasinis. In Avasinis there should be a warning that the road to Forgaria is impassable, but there isn't one in Forgaria. I know that VW Golf and Ford Fiesta drove the damaged section, but based on what I saw with my own eyes, a larger vehicle might have trouble - the asphalt is eroded and missing about a quarter of its width on the already narrow road. At the starting point there's a bench and table next to the pond, so it's nice to sit there after the tour; a canned drink hidden in the car or pond (to keep it cold) won't hurt. Path 817 to the summit is partly dilapidated and somewhat exposed in places, mostly nicely walkable to open terrain, where on steep grass and loose stones you need to carefully follow the marks, as off the trodden path it's unpleasant. The path to the ridge exits right of Cuel dai Poz, further right is Monte Cuar, our goal to the left. After ascent to Cuel dai Poz, descent under Flagjel, then nice mule track with one secured spot leads under the summit. Last part through forest, cairn at junction from mule track. Summit above large cross, best views at cross. Descent possible via three paths: in any case climb back to Cuel dai Poz - from there descend the same way as ascent, or to Malga Cuar pasture and then to Cuel di Forchia saddle, or continue along the ridge to nearby Monte Cuar and then to Cuel di Forchia. On the way to Cuar, some snow in forest just below summit, no obstacle. I did the whole trip safely and comfortably in low shoes. From Cuel di Forchia to starting point 20 min walk, we went by road (slight uphill in between, no problem). Great trip!

Friday, 2.5.2025

Started and finished at Val Tochel, free parking, tables, benches and pond there. Ascent to Flagjel via abandoned path 817, which is nicely passable. Where dilapidated, well trodden around, cairns everywhere, of course marks still there. Below Cuel dai Poz I went by nose to avoid descent from it, when I hit the path between Cuar and Flagjel it wasn't far to the latter. Greet some folks already up there, and I sit for break, taking care of hunger and thirst. Meanwhile some griffon vultures fly by, regulars on my trips around Humina area. Beautiful birds. After break I go higher into forest to true summit, cross stands lower at viewpoint, then back same path to Poz and continue to Cuar. Views fairytale-like, though somewhat cloudier and less enchanting than usual. At bell couple of shots, then a bit more to Maria, sit again for break. Wherever I look, mountains, valleys and places so familiar I feel like coming home when heading there on foot or bike. On further descent to Cuel di Forchia chat with couple, he Italian, she Czech, bit Italian bit English, with lady even few words in Slovenian, she said Slovenian sounds better to her than Italian. During chat pet their dog thoroughly. From Forchia to car by road, quite hot, had to laugh when I caught myself seeking shade from trees at edge. What when real heat hits. At car use bench again, change shoes, rest, air car, then home, no choice. Short stop at Monte Prat plateau for last peek at hills I roamed, and another Carnic fairytale ended nasmeh
