You leave the car at the parking lot where you also go to Krn. The path to Mrzli vrh is a bit before the parking lot.
Last year they set up a parking lot.1

In the village Krn you drive at a very sharp left bend straight ahead about 200m. The parking for about ten cars is at the last house, on the left side of the road. From there you walk on a gentle cart track in the direction of the saddle visible from afar, where planina Pretovč (1140m) is and from where the path to Mrzli vrh leads. This way you save those bends of the steep road to the parking at the Krn starting point and the crossing of the slope above the village. The views are not impaired...

Today I went looking for sun on Mrzli vrh. The path from planina Kuhinja is mostly dry, here and there a patch of frozen snow. The shady side above planina Pretovč is snowy and icy. For descent to the planina or crossing I recommend crampons.

A little more than a year Mrzli vrh waited for me. Because a year ago I turned back below the summit due to too much sinking snow. This time on that section to the summit it was hard and without winter gear I would turn back. From planina Kuhinja we headed over Leskovca. Already above Leskovca we had to put on crampons because the snow was frozen. First time I went from here to planina Sleme. Beautiful views and quite warm on the way. To Pretovč it's mostly flat walking. Easy. We also looked at the well near Pretovč from Austro-Hungarian times. To Mrzli vrh those 200 meters is another story. Sometimes icy, elsewhere the snow sank. But on the summit warm and beautiful views all around, from Tolmin mountains to Soča on the other side. We descended along the ridge on the other side, where we put on crampons for the third time due to frozen snow. We did a circular tour, past the hermit cave to the starting point. It came to 16 km. We met no one on the way.
Empty parking lot. Snow on Krnska plošča is visibly receding.1

On the last June day of this year I climbed from Zatolmin via Vodel vrh to Mrzli vrh. Quite steep and muddy path to Vodel vrh, then pure poetry through pastures and meadows to Mrzli vrh. I returned past planina Pretovč and then by road to Zatolmin.

Mrzli vrh from Zatolmin. 16.02. I hadn't been there yet. We decided to go first to Vodil vrh. It's 1050m high. There at the chapel we turned into the steep slope, which didn't let up all the way to the summit. The day was pleasant. Warm. For continuing we didn't yet know if we would go right to planina Pretovč or left side along the ridge to the summit. Snow was ahead on the path. Hard as concrete in places. We put on crampons all the way to the forest, where the path was dry. The last part to the summit was snowy. Snow was softened by the sun. On the summit and on the path we met no one. Almost no wind. Beautiful views from the summit. We could hear the rumbling of avalanches there near Stador. For descent we put on crampons. Then again taking off crampons in the dry forest. Lower on the path in the shady part there was icy snow and again we had to repeat the procedure. To the junction for Tolmin. Nice sunny and steep tour on Shrove Tuesday.
we started walking at the little church. 1
at the cross, also a memorial from the First World War.2

On Vodil vrh they even have a whole sea.10

Krn is very close.14
Little remains.15

At the cross.17
The Julian Alps are really white. A lot has already slid from Batognica.18
It is also trodden from Pretovča.19
Here the snow will disappear much earlier.20
Because it is not a high peak.21
Descent.22
Carefully on softened snow.23
At the trough there is a branch for Zatolmin.24
And the end of an interesting winter tour.25

You can tell it's April with mixed weather like this, even real snowfall over Tolmin. Started above Zatolmin, Ralne. The path went steeply up right from the start, steep all the way, even used crampons because the last part of the trail was muddy with snow and very slippery. Walked the ridge to Mrzli vrh, up to 25cm new snow. Descended the other Brešca path to Zatolmin and back up between the houses where I parked the car.

Finally yesterday was the day for us too to visit Mrzli vrh. It was long planned, but never really happened.
We headed there from Krn village or rather the parking behind it. To that parking there's an extremely narrow road, so narrow it takes your breath away. On the way we were often accompanied by the sound of water, we had several water crossings, and a couple of waterfalls along the path too, which definitely made the hike even nicer. We also went to Puščavnik Cave and pondered his story. A bit even today when I read a passage about him in Ukani.
A bit above the Open Air Museum we put on crampons, not much snow but what there was, was completely hard. On the summit and along the path, wonderful views, complete calm no wind, views to the Dolomites, to the south the sea was golden. Really wonderful place, wonderful hike!

For the return we continued along the ridge where different views opened up for us and thus circled back down to Pretovč pasture. We did the hike analysis under Krn village and concluded that Mrzli vrh impressed both of us much more than we actually expectednasmeh.
Next time maybe from some other starting pointnasmeh!

Yesterday I was amazed when I saw below under Zaslap pasture all full of blueberries. Looks like no one picked them this year.

21.02.2026. To Mrzli vrh. We decided to go from the village Gabrje. On Saturday morning. Along the known path. Although we haven't hiked here for several years. We didn't even think that the path would be snow-free almost to the top. Snow remained on the northern side. On descent from the top we decided to go to Vodil vrh. And to the valley. Lots of snow on Krn and Tolmin Peaks. The avalanche that thundered a few days ago from the gully between Batognica and Krn into the valley was clearly visible. On descent toward Vodel vrh we met a hiker heading to Mrzli vrh. A local woman who knows all paths here. On the last descent along the path which at least four years ago was still usable, now overgrown with blackberries. We had to turn back part of the path that was impassable. And find another passage. Before that we viewed Sopotnica waterfall. Went to where the count's water flows. For the end of the tour unexpected view of the interior of Kofol's mill. Friendly local got talking and told many interesting things. Tour wasn't short. We walked 16 km. About 1300m elevation gain. Peak isn't high at all. But has wonderful view of the clear daughters of mountains. Views from Vodil vrh don't lag behind either.
