Mrzlica and Šmohor - oh, those huts

With a buddy, both of us doing the Vezist's transversal, we went today on a shorter trip to two points of that trail - Mrzlica and Šmohor above Laško. We started in Podmeja and in the fresh morning a bit before 9am reached Mrzlica. In the hut there was a larger number of quite noisy hikers (though it seemed to me some were already a bit tipsy - at 9am in the morning, hello?). The lady working there was fully devoted to serving them beer and didn't bother with us. Then the loud talking all over and laughing started to get on our nerves, so we headed on towards Šmohor. The trail dragged on a bit, we walked a little over two hours, and it was getting muggy. Well, the walkers sitting around the hut at Šmohor were more calm. Service in the hut was a bit weird again. My buddy and I sat outside and waited and waited. Buddy went to the hut to order drinks. He entered through the wrong door and the guy working inside yelled at him that that's the kitchen and they'll come out. Sure enough, a lady came out, but went to take the order first from the next table where obviously some of her acquaintances were sitting, though they arrived at the hut much later than us. Real nice, we think, we drink up and head back to the starting point. You go to the mountains to enjoy the silence and nature, and then rest a bit in some hut where you refresh; but you get a real little shock when you run into a racket or unfriendly service in a mountain hut. Good thing it's not like that everywhere...

Well, since you picked Sunday for the trip, I assume you ran into a big group of Mrzlica visitors from the Savinja valley, whom you meet almost every Sunday in the hut. They are really noisy, I understand it bothered you (me sometimes too). But I don't think they were already drunk - usually not. It's true that after they leave you appreciate the peace in the hut... The service in the hut depends on who you run into. Sometimes good, other times not the best.

I visit Mrzlica often (really always in the afternoon) and except for a few rare days I really have no complaints regarding service or guests. It was different before the current tenant took over the hut (of course this is just my opinion). I think that Mrzlica has in the recent time again become a popular spot for hikers and nature lovers, be it the "noisy and loud Savinjčani" or other visitors of this nice mountaineering spot. What bothers me more than loud hikers are the drivers of cross motorbikes and quad bikes who drive on mountaineering trails or even across meadows (by the way, the owners of these meadows first have to fix the damage done by wild boars, then when mowing approaches irresponsible drivers "rip them up"). I hope that regarding this opinion of mine I am not alone. Regarding Šmohor, I think that such a nice mountaineering spot would finally deserve a better provider of catering services (after several unsuccessful attempts) and the withdrawal of irresponsible motorcyclists who arrive practically almost to the doorstep of the hut.

Regarding the criticism of the hut on Šmohor above Laško, I don't get it?! I visited the hut end of June this year and was thrilled with the excellent food at moderate prices and friendly service. I don't know if the staff changed since then or something or if there's another hut with the same name

Regarding Mrzlica, I can say that the service is excellent since the new caretaker arrived. Sometimes you just have to wait a bit because there are quite a few hikers on Sunday mornings. I advise you to head to the mountains in good spirits, positively minded, then neither the service nor noisy hikers will bother you. Otherwise, it's better to stay home or go to some peak without a hut, where you can enjoy the peace and not criticize everything.

Stay home??? Criticizing everything???? Sorry, buddy or gal "eeee", I've been hiking Slovenian peaks for so long, and always stop at huts, that I think I know a bit about what noisy hikers are and what decent service is. A group of around 8 to 10 hikers laughing loudly, belching and disturbing other hikers, with nothing but beer mugs on the tables (at 9am), was really louder than the packed Aljažev dom at the door on a late Saturday afternoon. Maybe they were just some Sunday hikers, there are lots of those in our hills, letting loose on their trip? As for service, waiting is no problem for me. But it's proper that caretakers work fair play, and not devote themselves mainly to guests from whom they expect more earnings (because there are more of them and they drink), or guests who are their acquaintances! Criticisms? Some can't stand them, others try to change things for the better because of them.

When I've run into such a situation, I've gone to the bar counter and ordered what I wanted. I usually do that also in huts with a larger number of people. On Saturday (15.8.09) at Pesek we would surely have sat a long time waiting for service. At the bar counter I was done in five minutes and satisfied were the serving staff and the thirsty buddies!! Yeah, we both DID go to the counter, but we were told to sit down and wait, and nothing came of it (at Mrzlica); at Šmohor the guy working in the hut yelled at my buddy that service would come out - just after the buddy went to the counter. So one doesn't know anymore what's right.

A bit late - haven't followed this topic anymore. But that someone at Mrzlica wouldn't be served at the counter seems a bit far-fetched to me. I'm at Mrzlica quite often (40+ visits per year), and I've neither experienced nor heard of anything like that. You two must have had really exceptional bad luck.

Maybe it was really just bad luck, who knows??

I also say that service at Mrzlica is top-notch. This year I've been there already more than 30 times and there were never any problems. When the owner sees me, she already knows herself what to bring me. From my side, all praise to the owner. Keep it up, and guests will be satisfied. But there are also rare exceptions to whom nothing suits.

gabi I agree with you, maybe you can look here (and others) what happened to me at Gospodični: http://www.hribi.net/izlet/vahta_planinski_dom_pri_gospodicni_po_cesti/25/733/1324. Sure nobody believes me, but I see I'm not the only one raising my voice, while the majority is convinced that the waiter's or caretaker's authority is always right and they submit. I was also at Šmohor. Good food, there were also local boozers, well I went straight to the bar and didn't wait and did the same when paying. But I can say that they obviously don't know what a BILL is yet, though it doesn't seem to me it was terribly expensive (for mountain conditions) or that they cheated me.

On the Šmohor - Malič route found a black phone case. If someone misses it, contact me via private message...

After lunch it looks like there won't be rain today. We drive to the quarry in Liboje, leave the car there and head up the steep path to Šmohor. We return off-path towards Malič and then turn on steep meadows back to the starting point. The path is steep and the recent rain has made a real slide.

Yesterday 2.4. to Šmohor and Malič. Start from Liboj a bit muddy. Otherwise super conditions, also for biking.
