Mudna dol

Mudna Valley is one of the variants of access to the area of Grobniške Alpe above Rijeka. The path runs through an attractive gorge, which is actually the dry bed of the Sušica stream. The passages are unusual, smoothed multiple times by water and many would certainly be impassable without protections. In case of heavier rainfall this applies to the entire gorge.

The path is currently passable without problems. You also have to free-climb over some boulders, which are probably there for a long, long time. I recommend shoes with good grip, a helmet won't hurt either. At the entrance to the gorge there are some remains of refugees, but they were not visible. Highly recommended nasmeh.

Coordinates of the starting point (end of the village Podkilavac): 45.403279, 14.470366

A bit more about Grobniške Alpe here ... Click

Mudna dol The sign for Mudna dol is sufficient. From the village Podkilavac this is the rightmost marked variant of access to koča Hahlič1
Mudna dol The entrance to the gorge is nothing special. There is no trace of water, which is illustrated by the name of the stream ... Sušica2
Mudna dol Partly walking on the rocky bed, partly on the path beside it3
Mudna dol Soon the first peculiarity of the gorge appears, a good 10 m high jump, which is probably a wonderful waterfall in rain4
Mudna dol Poles went into backpacks, due to smooth walls it was necessary to use both hands5
Mudna dol In aid are slightly unusual steel cables, covered in plastic tube6
Mudna dol The continuation goes through dry pools, polished smooth by water7
Mudna dol Exit from the initial pool8
Mudna dol Another smooth chute, this time without protections9
Mudna dol Here the steel cable helps again, because the chute is too steep and too smooth for free progression10
Mudna dol Exit from yet another small pool, this time by ladder11
Mudna dol We went deeper into the gorge, it was getting narrower12
Mudna dol I can't imagine the path through this gorge in rain13
Mudna dol We progress slowly, but time passes lightning-fast amid all the attractions :)14
Mudna dol Sometimes polished rocks are replaced by gravel15
Mudna dol Elsewhere again damp moss, which requires a lot of caution when crossing16
Mudna dol A few more gravel areas, just to catch our breath :)17
Mudna dol And again we crawl from pool to pool18
Mudna dol Boulders also block our path. Some have protections, some do not19
Mudna dol The gorge narrows to just a few meters in some places20
Mudna dol The rock has also yielded to the power of water21
Mudna dol Another of the boulders on the path22
Mudna dol We often thought the gorge was ending, but another surprise appeared23
Mudna dol End of the Mudna dol gorge. Towards the end, watch the markers so as not to go too far24
Mudna dol Here the gorge runs25
Mudna dol Another view back from afar. The gorge runs under the sandy part of the hill26
