Mousala - 2925 m and not 1925 m, highest peak of the Balkans! I was up there four years ago. Otherwise good description!

Primož, good description of the hike to the highest peak of the Balkans and Bulgaria. Here you really get to see interesting nature with lots of lakes and surrounding peaks. We were there with our hiking club last month (22.6.) and some small lakes were still under ice, but we had fantastic weather, which we spiced up the next day with ascent to the second highest peak of Bulgaria - Vihren 2914m.

Primož, only now I see that you took Bulgaria "seriously". wink I read from back to front - like a newspaper. The Bulgarian mountains are really exceptional in summer and winter. All huts are open and supplied mostly year-round. There's more and more visits from our hikers despite the slightly longer drive. A few winter ones from Musala smilewink

Going on vacation in mid-November almost 1400km away is, at least weather-wise, a big lottery. And I must say, this time we hit the jackpot: out of eight days of travel, only the last day had "bad weather". There's quite a lot of material and it would fit better in some travel blog, so I'll limit myself to the mountaineering.
On Monday 16.11.2015 we arrive with our off-roader via curves (Vojvodina, Džerdap gorge) at the renowned Bulgarian ski resort Borovec in Rila Mountains. We planned to take the gondola the next day to the upper cable car station at about 2300m and then on foot to the highest peak of the Balkan Peninsula, 2925m Musala. But the month-long cable car maintenance prevented that, so we had to do the whole way from Borovec (about 1400m asl) on foot, even though there's a road (for off-roaders of course) up to well over 2000m. Because of the nature reserve they don't let vehicles up, even though the whole area is riddled with ski slopes. Instead of less than three hours we used a full seven, which in November means practically the whole day. To the last cable car station we went straight across the ski slope, then on a bad road through pines to the first mountain hut and past beautiful lakes (see previous route descriptions to the top!) to the next one, which is closed at this time. Path beautiful, no snow, views wonderful, only temperature wintry: at 2700m minus 6°C, at the top in the morning a full minus 10°C! Luckily we could sleep at the meteorological station on the top. In the morning we experienced a beautiful sunrise and later returned to the valley in nice weather.
Next was the ascent to the highest peak of Serbia Midžor, but that's another story! A short description can be found at Other countries, Serbia – Midžor..

Second part of the vacation we planned Balkan tour...a bit of hiking on the highest peaks and a bit of tourism and history refreshing...
With gondola we drive to the starting point of most walkers and start through nice surroundings past many small lakes and three huts to the top of Musala. We return along the ridge to the gondola...
The peak really has a lot of visitors, people friendly...country cheap and quite cleansmile
morning crowd in front of the gondola1
the mountain and its surroundings are crisscrossed with ski slopes, in winter it must be a real ski paradise2

Interesting, it pulls you in. But I don't understand, in your first message you write about a peak that's not even 2000m high. Now it's a bit higher.confused

I really enjoy reading your descriptions of bold via ferratas, interesting paths in the mountains, as well as contributions from abroad. But I'd be lying if I said that I'm as interested in what percentage family setup you did a certain tour in as last year's snow.
Definitely I'm much more interested in how much snow fell last year, the year before or even more years ago, than the size of your family on a certain tour.
Nice, nice, nice, nice, nice, nice please, continue to delight us with nice descriptions and conditions on tours, spill family problems somewhere else.
Thanks in advance!

Unacceptable Primož, how is it possible that after the height fix five years ago, jprim is still splitting hairs. A deep apology is warranted

Hey, is there something wrong with that. Normally one says ... For example
: I apologize for the mistake ... And the thing gets fixed.
Why do you all think my comments are ill-intentioned. Not true. Just correct it if mistaken somewhere. Some heights don't allow certain remarks.

Primož, thanks! Nice that you're cheering us up with such witty comments and excellent photos. Plus we get news that belongs to the top of the yellow press or even "rumor mill". Enjoy your well-deserved break to the max! nasmeh nasmeh

After visiting Midžor in Serbia, Boris and I slept in Pirot, the next day 16.07.22 we headed to Bulgaria to climb Musala. We planned to ascend the same day. Unfortunately at the border crossing in Dimitrograd there was such a queue that we had to wait over four hours to pass. So that day we stopped in Sofia too and late afternoon drove to Borovec where we slept. Morning of 17.07.22 we took the gondola up to Jastrebec. From there to Musala Hut 40 min, then to the shelter another 1h50min and from there to the top 25 min, so total with breaks 2h10. Descent took a bit longer as we lunched at Musala Hut.

Ascent to Vihren, second highest peak in Bulgaria, located in Pirin National Park. Plan was by car to the hut just below 2000m. Plan failed, parking full, ranger directs us to parking just below 1800m. No problem, quickly at the hut and continue ascent to Vihren. Elevation gains quickly, nice views all around. Trail not technically demanding. In under two and a half hours at the top. About one and a half hours back to the hut. Food and drinks extremely cheap, all tasty. Then from the hut to a couple of lakes nearby. Total 18 km and 1800m elevation. Seven hours with breaks.

Fairly long tour on Vihren the previous day and easy jaunt to Musala the next, but it wasn't. We find out the gondola to the highest point doesn't run on Tuesdays. What now? After some searching we find Sitnyakovo chairlift, which runs on Tuesdays but takes to the other side of Musala. To just below 1800m. Don't know the trail, read it's nice, more gradual, long through forest and nicer than the classic which most use for Musala. Great. Just... long but no problem. Chairlift up and start the trail, really very nice, through forest, well-maintained and marked. Follow marks to point where we'd descend to Musala Hotel. Here I check the map and realize we can do a loop, instead of descent to hotel, up to ridge and via Mala Musala along ridge traverse to Musala summit. Great decision. Trail not marked but fairly easy to follow. Cairns for help. Some easy scrambling, fixed cables at points. To Musala summit traverse 3 peaks along ridge: Deno (2790m), Ireček (2852m) and Mala Musala (2925m). Trail to summit takes us 4 hours. Nice views of surrounding lakes, ridge ahead and summit. From top descend classic to Musala Hotel, there our path branches right and along marked trail to chairlift arriving an hour before closing. Easy tour to Musala as planned initially turned into almost 23 km with 1600m elevation. Still very nice. Eight hours with breaks.

Attaching photos from both peaks. First 18 from Vihren, rest Musala.
