Vipava - Podnanos - Nanos Pleša /transmitter/ - Nanos Abram - Sanabor - Vrhpolje - Vipava One of my nicer circular hill tours, where you'll cycle just under 50 km and gain about 1,300 elevation meters, very suitable for a half-day Saturday or Sunday trip even in autumn time and these days. The old military road to the saddle, where the Hunters' hut is, is asphalted and quite comfortable, not overly steep, as it winds in long switchbacks. The second half to the top, after an initial slight descent, is more demanding further on, but steep sections are partly asphalted partly concreted, the last forest section under Vojak's hut is gravelly and quite annoying if the surface is too dry. Gentler and very nice terrain towards Abram, from there down to Sanabor just enjoyable descent. Variant or extension of the tour is to turn right under Abram across Blažon to Podkraj and across Col then descend towards Vrhpolje. One more warning: in shaded forest sections, especially on the northern side of the hill, roads are damp and slippery, so adjust your speed on descents. Although cycling paths are marked on maps, unfortunately they are not in nature or in practice, so you must orient yourselves by other markings. (Map: Primorska - Coast, Karst and Trieste region 1:40.000, Kartografija). And to all those who don't ride just for the clock and time, it's worth exploring a bit around Nanos and looking around, and the same goes for the very nicely arranged old part of Vipava town with the renovated Lanthieri Palace and the springs of the Vipava river. I recommend, including the foot ascent to the Old Castle (also marked as hiking trail).
