Vipava - Podnanos - Nanos Pleša /transmitter/ - Nanos Abram - Sanabor - Vrhpolje - Vipava

One of my nicer circular hill tours, where you'll cycle just under 50 km and gain about 1,300 elevation meters, very suitable for a half-day Saturday or Sunday trip even in autumn time and these days. The old military road to the saddle, where the Hunters' hut is, is asphalted and quite comfortable, not overly steep, as it winds in long switchbacks. The second half to the top, after an initial slight descent, is more demanding further on, but steep sections are partly asphalted partly concreted, the last forest section under Vojak's hut is gravelly and quite annoying if the surface is too dry. Gentler and very nice terrain towards Abram, from there down to Sanabor just enjoyable descent. Variant or extension of the tour is to turn right under Abram across Blažon to Podkraj and across Col then descend towards Vrhpolje. One more warning: in shaded forest sections, especially on the northern side of the hill, roads are damp and slippery, so adjust your speed on descents.
Although cycling paths are marked on maps, unfortunately they are not in nature or in practice, so you must orient yourselves by other markings. (Map: Primorska - Coast, Karst and Trieste region 1:40.000, Kartografija).
And to all those who don't ride just for the clock and time, it's worth exploring a bit around Nanos and looking around, and the same goes for the very nicely arranged old part of Vipava town with the renovated Lanthieri Palace and the springs of the Vipava river.
I recommend, including the foot ascent to the Old Castle (also marked as hiking trail).
Nanos - 1262m Starting point Vipava, view of part of the town below the old castle, park easiest at the fuzbal field.1
Nanos - 1262m Road Podnanos - Postoja, here we turn uphill to the old military road to Nanos.2
Nanos - 1262m Moderate slope along a comfortable asphalt road.3
Nanos - 1262m ... soon the first views down into the Vipava Valley.4
Nanos - 1262m Also one tunnel must be crossed on the uphill road.5
Nanos - 1262m Markers of the ascent covered, 7 km is about halfway to the top.6
Nanos - 1262m The real cycling starts from the saddle (hunting cottage) onwards.7
Nanos - 1262m Towards the summit ... the landscape somewhat resembles the ITA Dolomites.8
Nanos - 1262m On all major slopes, some asphalt is laid next to the concrete.9
Nanos - 1262m The last section through the forest below Vojkova koča is gravel ca. 2 km and quite tedious.10
Nanos - 1262m This view of the transmitters at the top brings new strength and energy.11
Nanos - 1262m At the top by the characteristic telecommunications antennas.12
Nanos - 1262m The view in fine weather is truly fantastic.13
Nanos - 1262m Mandatory visit to the chapel of St. Hieronymus.14
Nanos - 1262m What a pity that it is not possible to look inside it too.15
Nanos - 1262m Here we turn towards Abram.16
Nanos - 1262m followed by some steep climb and flatter sections17
Nanos - 1262m at Abram the biggest attraction is still Medved18
Nanos - 1262m downhill road on the northern side of the hill, if the sun does not shine on it, it is already wet and slippery in autumn19
Nanos - 1262m first half of the enjoyable descent to Sanabor village already behind us20
Nanos - 1262m and the second part follows through Vrhpolje village21
Nanos - 1262m Vrhpolje, cultural heritage of the place - old and new22
Nanos - 1262m in the centre of Vipava in front of Lanthieri Palace23
Nanos - 1262m ... with a bit of imagination - some Venetian architectural flair24
