Otmar's Path

First a short explanation. Otmar's Path is not the same as Otmarjeva ferrata in Gradiška Tura, but both are named after Otmar Črnilogar, a priest, enthusiastic mountaineer and man of many talents. The described path connects ten surrounding churches into a circular route and was created on his suggestion. We learned about it completely by chance and we perk up our ears for novelties nasmeh.

I didn't have much data for planning the route. All that's available is a not very readable map on PD Vipava (here), a little description of the path and that's it. I couldn't find GPS tracks anywhere. So I drew the known connections on a digital map, the rest we decided to solve on the go. I also counted on dedicated Otmar's Path signs and I was way off velik nasmeh. Locals know the route and they didn't put up signs despite the long tradition of the mentioned path. We're not all locals, so we had to find our own way.

We succeeded. We visited each of the ten churches, only the part from Griž to Sv. Tomaž we apparently walked our own way. We didn't find the poorly drawn connections on the map, so a local woman from Griž advised us the path via hamlets Sele and Stomaž. Probably a bit longer, but based on what we saw we didn't regret it for a moment. Everything else was straightforward, so we could enjoy exploring new places nasmeh. More in the photo story, GPS track is now available from me.
Otmar's Path We park at the church of Sv. Urbana, two kilometers from the Vipava motorway exit.1
Otmar's Path This is the first of ten churches on Otmarjeva pot, about a kilometer before Podraga.2
Otmar's Path We reach the village quickly, barely having warmed up. The bora can be quite cold in the morning.3
Otmar's Path Beautifully renovated chapel, to which the Slovenian Jakobova pot Society has greatly contributed.4
Otmar's Path We are still in Podraga, just going to the village church.5
Otmar's Path It is called the church of sv. Mohorja and Fortunata and is the largest on the entire trail.6
Otmar's Path Still a nicely made info board, but unfortunately we cannot view the interior. Closed.7
Otmar's Path Next to the church is a monument to Otmarju Črnilogarju, after whom the trail is named.8
Otmar's Path Immediately above the village the path climbs steeply uphill. No signs of Otmarjeva pot are visible.9
Otmar's Path View of Podraga embraced by the first sun. We are still in deep shade.10
Otmar's Path We have been following the Jakobova pot markers for a while, as a section coincides with Otmarjeva.11
Otmar's Path Another nice info board, unfortunately the last one. All following churches lack explanations.12
Otmar's Path Sv. Socerb. This one is also closed, so we can only view the exterior.13
Otmar's Path A bit on forest paths, a bit on cart tracks, we continue to the next target.14
Otmar's Path This is Sv. Ana. No more info boards, Jakobova pot has also said goodbye. Now we follow the map.15
Otmar's Path Nothing can be seen inside, so we go on.16
Otmar's Path Vrabče, through which we have just passed. One of the former presidential candidates hails from here.17
Otmar's Path Now we are already approaching Jakovce.18
Otmar's Path The architecture of some houses is quite special, adapted to communal and personal needs.19
Otmar's Path Even the logs are protected in a very special way :)20
Otmar's Path Sometimes there was no water pipe, just four of them21
Otmar's Path Village Tabor with the church of St. Mary. Already the fifth church in a row22
Otmar's Path The sore knee protests a bit and every crutch comes in handy :)23
Otmar's Path It's not that I have anything special against asphalt, but this fits better anyway :)24
Otmar's Path We are already in Griže. Right at the entrance we spot an interesting object, unfortunately no explanatory plaques25
Otmar's Path There is a lot preserved in the yard too, but we can't figure out much26
Otmar's Path St. Martin in Griže. Bell towers are a specialty of these places, almost all churches have the same style27
Otmar's Path We continue the path on the recommendation of a local. Direction Sela and Stomaž, then Sv. Tomaž28
Otmar's Path Elegant, long-legged, obviously on a diet. Or maybe it's a more economical variant :)29
Otmar's Path We won't wait for the bus, it probably doesn't run very often :)30
Otmar's Path Village Sela. We bypass it along the right edge31
Otmar's Path We need to cross the Kranjšček stream, so we descend deep into the gully32
Otmar's Path Luckily there is a bridge there, otherwise we'd have to go with shoes around the neck :)33
Otmar's Path On the other side we climb up again and exit the gully at the vineyards34
Otmar's Path Šent Tomaž = Stomaž. There are tons of such local concoctions in Slovenia35
Otmar's Path Interesting sign. Along the stream we just crossed, there were once 7 mills operating36
Otmar's Path This is the church that gave the village its name ... St. Thomas. This one also has the same bell tower style37
Otmar's Path Slowly we finally descend to the valley along the Raša stream and for a while it will be more level38
Otmar's Path Crops are already nicely greening, trees are a bit behind39
Otmar's Path Approaching Mahničem, a forgotten hamlet in a beautiful and peaceful valley.40
Otmar's Path The next church, already the eighth in a row. It is dedicated to St. Anthony.41
Otmar's Path Already ascending, this time literally to Hribe :) Yellow cars are not allowed to park here ...42
Otmar's Path Here blue ones :) And with all these signs, there's space for a whole truck, not just cars.43
Otmar's Path Hribi, a village with an unusual name. But appropriately steep up to here.44
Otmar's Path Just when we think Hribi is the most remote hamlet, the path leads us to another one.45
Otmar's Path The steepness is tough, the sun hot, excess clothing quickly moves to backpacks.46
Otmar's Path Bogo, like it or not. Houses are of the older kind, we meet no one.47
Otmar's Path Sv. Katarina above the village. A charming little church, far from the daily life of us valley dwellers.48
Otmar's Path The bells carry wishes to the sky. Perhaps one of them will come true :)49
Otmar's Path Back on the yellow path. This one will lead us almost to the starting point on the return.50
Otmar's Path Not immediately. We still have to see another beautiful village named Štjak.51
Otmar's Path We are alone, but surely curious eyes watch us through half-open windows.52
Otmar's Path The last one ... church of St. Jacob. I have walked here before and it stayed in my memory.53
Otmar's Path This was my first long-distance path ... Jakobova pot from Slovenska vas to Trsta.54
Otmar's Path Now we really return along the yellow markers all the way to Podraga.55
Otmar's Path The path is beautiful and comfortable, the views magnificent.56
Otmar's Path Arrives in Podrago from the other side than we walked in the morning57
Otmar's Path The final kilometer is the same, just much hotter :)58
Otmar's Path Despite the nice weekend, there aren't that many parked :)59
Otmar's Path Our track. It came to 30 km and 1200 elevation gain60
