Pekrska Gorca - 351 m - Slovenian Calvary

Yesterday I was visiting Maribor and since I don't just sit inside, they took me to the Maribor excursion spot - Pekarsko gorco also called Slovenian Calvary. It's a lonely hill kind of in the middle of the Maribor plain. It lies on the eastern side of Pekr. This tonalite hill lies on a geological fault - high only a mere 351 m. The northeast side of the hill is forested, the southeast has planted vines. They make famous wine there - Perkčan. The vineyard is exemplary maintained and fenced. From the eastern side of the hill past the Regional Center RTV Slovenia - RTV Maribor leads through a little forest to the top a marked pleasant path with four renovated chapels of the way of the cross. In the chapel are combined three stations of the way of the cross - in the chapels there are wooden sculptures. At the top there is a nice small Mary church built in 1830, which replaced the cross erected in 1664. On the church I saw a notice that here once a month there are masses - religious ceremony. Near the church there are benches and even a table and a viewpoint and a big panel with a map of Maribor and surroundings and of course the history and importance of Pekarske gorce. On the northeast slope Bloudek built in 1955 a 70-meter ski jump, where international jumping competitions took place still in the seventies.
Really, this excursion spot is so close to the city that it is worth visiting. Old and young walk up there, I saw runners. Near the RTV center are Urbani vrtovi - ecological gardens. Such shaped gardens are the first of their kind in Slovenia with nice garden sheds. Of course you can't just walk around them because it is locked - worth viewing, even from outside. Nearby is vila Rustika, where there are excavations from the Roman period and later Slavic cemetery - worth viewing.

Sometimes they jumped there - one competition I watched long ago in 1973. .... It's a shame that Pohorje fox took away winter primacy from ski jumps. There was a crowd at the competition.
