Planina Zajavornik

Sometimes one of our acquaintances "well-meaningly" hints to us that we spend way too much time with our girls, that we keep "dragging" them everywhere, saying kids can organize their vacation days just fine by themselves. But we advocate encouraging children to spend their free time actively in nature and occasionally introducing them to a new adventure and giving them a new experience... Experiences of all kinds enrich us all, young and old...

So yesterday we took our younger daughter snowshoeing for the first time. We went from the Sport Hotel on Pokljuka to Planina Zajavornik and back. Just long enough to get a "taste" for snowshoeing and just short and easy enough not to be too tiring and so she doesn't get turned off right away.

A snowshoe track was already waiting for us. Good thing. There's tons of snow on Pokljuka. At first we got a bit stubborn, saying we didn't come here to walk on the track, we'll go right beside it, through the deep stuff, so her first snowshoe experience is the real deal… "Yeah right"... mežikanje …we quickly changed our minds when we were knee-deep in snow even with snowshoes on… eek …and so we nicely followed the track that continues towards Lipanci…

No words needed about the beauty of the landscape under the thick snow blanket… simply gorgeous. And peaceful and solitary. Except for a few cross-country skiers gliding elegantly on perfectly groomed ski trails, we met no one.

Already on the way back, the daughter announced that today was so nice she'll "put her impressions into words" too… for her memory… and she ended like this:

"This was my favorite winter trip ever and I'll never forget it. It was fairy-tale like and wonderful. Even though I fell into the snow many times, especially at the start, I can't wait for the next snowshoe trip…. nasmeh"

And what do we think? … Yay, one zero for us... mežikanjenasmeh

wonderful pics you've made, maybe based on your description of this day some parent finally sees that it's not all just computers, but [you] need to give [the] child such incentive too and in [the] end realize[s] you won and [the] kids were very satisfied

@GITA As always, great. To acquaintances "well-meaningly" say what they sow now, they reap in future. With [the] difference that your harvest in future [will be] much more fruitful compared to "well-meaning" acquaintances' harvest. Which you know best. Let them not read only permissive upbringing books and [let them] better read some study how not to screw up kids, your acquaintances that is. Good luck with your teens.

@GITA,
wonderful day for family outing. Description and beautiful photos, nothing to add. [In my] thoughts also thumbs up for your family.
Nothing [is] more valuable than time spent with family. Kids don't measure family happiness by wiped dust, perfectly tidy room, washed dishes .... but by [the] time parents spent with them. Remember our childhood.
Take care and enjoy.

Surprised by the nice response, thanks! I actually doubted whether to post at all, since it's more of a "walk" than a "tour". But I posted at my daughter's urging, who said... "why not post it if it was so nice..." nasmeh

@mukica, yesterday that was the one and only track made by previous snowshoers; we "tested" it for the first few steps also "on foot", but it sank a bit since the track was not compacted like hikers would make it. Maybe it's different today or in the coming days. It was visible that this track leads further towards Lipanca. We unfortunately had no time for that "extension". We went "holiday-like" late from home and were further delayed by renting snowshoes for our daughter.

Maybe useful info for someone: in Ljubljana at Iglu on Vič, we couldn't get them, all rented over the weekend and not yet returned; we tried our luck at Iglu in Lesce, got them there. Rental for three days is 6.99 EUR (50 EUR deposit required, which is returned upon return of the snowshoes).

As for kids, I say this: such things work if the kid is "for it". You can't force anything, you can only encourage and offer various options. Since the older daughter "stepped" into her sixteenth year, she has no more "time" for such joint adventures. We only hope that the "seed" we planted in past years is healthy and strong enough to survive a couple of years and maybe then "sprout"... that the memories and experiences are beautiful enough to pull her back to the mountain paths one day... hand on heart... we too had a decade-long "pause"... and then suddenly one day memories revived like a "bolt from the blue" and nostalgia became so strong that it was almost "painful"... and it started again...nasmeh

@GITA,
why would you be surprised? From your descriptions and photos always radiates so much positive energy.
You never complain, never scold, never argue, never belittle anyone, never sting anyone ... something that is a true rarity in today's time.

GITA,
wonderful ramble immortalized with beautiful photos. Nice that you share these fairy-tale experiences with us. This way children learn how gray the cities are and how alive nature is. Your genuine love for nature shines through, which you pass on to your children. That's a great investment in their future, which is quite uncertain these days.
"If one truly loves nature, one can find beauty everywhere."
(Vincent van Gogh)
PS: Also on your "walk".
Best regards and safe steps from under the beautiful Golte, Janez

Winter paradise is Planina Zajavornik. Huts thickly covered, ski trails groomed. I went to check the road too. Around the pasture towards Rudno polje it's not plowed. From the Kranjska dolina direction there's quite a lot of snow on the road. With a "4x4" maybe possible. The path to Lipanca is also trodden. And I saw bear tracks in the bushes, interesting ramble..nasmeh

Today instead of Monday the Monday walkers -retirees of PD Škofja Loka -due to weather to Pokljuka to find the little-known pasture Velika Raven. We drove to the trail junction for pastures and found the right path. No signs for this pasture. Somehow you discover the path to the pasture. Here the path ends and turns onto the pasture. On the pasture there's just a small hut and a hunting observatory. The pasture is a grazing one. Then we continued to Planina Zajavornik for sour milk and to buy excellent cheese. From the pasture to the main road where the bus picked us up. This time we had youth with us. Weather was nice.
We have arrived at the starting point.1
We are in the national park area. According to this sign, picking mushrooms and picking flowers is prohibited.2
