Don't beat me on the butt if this topic is out of the context of hiking or mountaineering, but these devices work great just in the hills and mountains.
The record in this part of Europe was set in 2006 from our Kanin to Cimon (2165m) in the Apennines over a distance of 330km. In England they set a record of more than 500km. eek A month ago I talked from Slavnik with such a device to someone in Bologna, that's 250km!

I'm talking about radio stations operating on 446 MHz frequencies, and no exam is needed to use them. Also, no permit fee is required, unlike in Italy for example.

Quick about the station ->
The device has 8 channels and many so-called subchannels. Function with subchannels is desirable, but not necessary. Transmits with 0.5 watts power, so it performs excellently in the open and 'at high'. Obstacles can be blocks, trees, thunderstorm clouds etc.

In the PMR446 world it's customary to make first contact on channel8 / sub tone 0 or channel8 / sub tone 8 and then continue the talk on another channel by agreement with the interlocutor.

So excellent hobby that pairs well with poles and crampons. nasmeh

Happy 2011
