Polhograjska Hiking Trail

More by luck than not, I found a circular trail right near Ljubljana, which many probably don't even know about. The most interesting is that it's marked on a Czech portal velik nasmeh. This trail is called Polhograjska planinska pot and was laid out back in 1987. It's about 80 km long and connects most of the main points of the Polhograjske Hills.

For us, 80 km at once is of course too much, especially since days are short and cold at this time of year. So I divided it into three parts that logistically work out somehow. We just walked the first part and were pleasantly surprised. Paths are well marked, not particularly strenuous, above all there was quite a lot new for us. We can hardly wait to continue nasmeh. How the first part of the trail went is more in pictures and words...
Polhograjska Hiking Trail The entire route of the Polhograjska planinska pot, total length approximately 80 km1
Polhograjska Hiking Trail We park near the main crossroads in Belica. There is space for only 3 cars.2
Polhograjska Hiking Trail We head towards Babna gora. It's freezing, so we have all our winter clothes on.3
Polhograjska Hiking Trail View towards Dvor. The fields are whitened by hoarfrost, the sun is in no hurry to rise.4
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Babna Gora. The name is said to come from brave women who drove away the Turks with boiling water.5
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Direction sign on the farm building. We go towards Ključ.6
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Zasel Zibel, which also belongs to Babna Gora.7
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Along the marked path, past the old house, we descend into the valley.8
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Another old homestead, this time Pr' Kranc.9
Polhograjska Hiking Trail In front of it are interesting, very cute direction signs :)10
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Soon we are in the forest. The frost has done its work and the trees have lost their decoration.11
Polhograjska Hiking Trail There are still plenty of markers and here we turn left towards the hut.12
Polhograjska Hiking Trail A track leads to it, thickly covered with leaves. We tread as if on snow :)13
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Partizanski dom na Ključu. I have not seen information about opening hours, nor that it is intended for hikers.14
Polhograjska Hiking Trail From the hut we continue to the nearby Ključ15
Polhograjska Hiking Trail The summit has no view, but even has a summit book16
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Not much, winter is here. At least we know why we barely shake in time :)17
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Follows descent and continuation more or less along the ridge18
Polhograjska Hiking Trail This is probably the marker for Polhograjska pot. We saw some already before, but there aren't many19
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Paths of all sorts, roads, trails, cart tracks and more to be found20
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Dubious ... don't know exactly who POZOR refers to :)21
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Grmada in the distance. From this viewpoint it apparently represents lying Napoleon22
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Hamlet near Škofijski hrib23
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Behind these houses the path turns right into the valley24
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Locals at rest :)25
Polhograjska Hiking Trail View in the direction of Podrebri26
Polhograjska Hiking Trail View in the direction of Polhov Gradec27
Polhograjska Hiking Trail View in the direction of Sv. Lovrenc28
Polhograjska Hiking Trail All right before Polhov Gradec. There are still many traces of recent floods.29
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Blagajev grad, which now houses a post and telecommunications museum.30
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Right behind it is a cluster of signposts, somewhat older but still valid :)31
Polhograjska Hiking Trail For a while we follow the local road. On the right is the first refreshment point since the start.32
Polhograjska Hiking Trail One variant of Polhograjska pot goes through Mačkov graben, the other across Setnica. We go across Mačka.33
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Houses are in the dark ravine and squeezed on the sunny side of the hill.34
Polhograjska Hiking Trail We too follow it diligently before we leave the ravine.35
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Farm Jelovčnik high in the slopes. From what can be seen, someone still lives here.36
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Second station, tourist farm Gonte. They have the best cottage cheese strudel far and wide :)37
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Further on we turn left towards Grmada.38
Polhograjska Hiking Trail At the top full of people who came for recreation and views.39
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Farm Jelovčnik from Grmada. Exactly down there we walked an hour ago.40
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Hikers keep coming and coming, so we quickly hurry down :)41
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Our direction is slightly left, but the path is easily missed due to the more trodden right variant.42
Polhograjska Hiking Trail The path is mostly along the ridge with dry ground, only the lower part is more slippery.43
Polhograjska Hiking Trail First houses by Veliki graben.44
Polhograjska Hiking Trail Already at the endpoint. Parking lot is full, some cars on the nearby meadow.45
Polhograjska Hiking Trail GPS track of the entire route. We covered 22 km and 1300 m ascent.46

Bagi, how many hours did you two spend on the first part? nasmeh

@Kafetarca ... 7.5 hours, including a longer stop at Pograjski dom and a short one at Gonte. We don't take intermediate breaks, walking pace isn't particularly fast, mainly due to lots of photographing velik nasmeh.

Aha, so a full-day hike (at this time of year), a light comes in handy at the endnasmeh

At the end of the year, the second part of the Polhograjske trail came up, although due to *winter* we didn't count on it much. Lack of snow called for continuation and we quickly found a free day for another visit to these places. Weather was dull and dark, but this part of the trail is beautiful and scenic, mostly unknown to us and therefore all the more interesting velik nasmeh.

To the starting point just before Koreno village we climbed from Polhov Gradec. From there we continued clockwise to Butajnova village and a bit further, descended to the start via Mali vrh and Polhograjska gora. Both peaks are also part of the Polhograjske trail. Then descent to the beekeeping hut, arrived at parking just before daylight started fading. More on how we walked in the photo story...

Meanwhile, we wish all users of this portal happy holidays, full of beautiful moments on trails and may 2024 cooperate with you nasmeh.

Emil and Mateja
We park in Polhov Gradec at the parking lot below the church1
Nicely decorated new bus station. We turn right past it2
We head towards Korenem, but first we will look for the continuation of the first stage.3
Struga Male vode is getting a new appearance. Much has already been repaired after the floods.4
Here we descended last time, so we already know this part of the path.5
Another marker that is impossible to miss. There are three parallel cart tracks here.6
In the valley there was frost, but as we gain height it gets hot for us. Although there is no sun, the inversion is noticeable.7
At this house we concluded the first part of the Polhograjska, now we continue the second part from here.8
In many places the old markings have been renewed and are clearly visible, but not everywhere.9
Appropriate for the date :)10
At the nearby road fork we continue along the right side.11
There are plenty of signposts. Here we continue right towards Samotorica and Kožljak.12
Church of Sv. Mohorja and Fortunata above Korenom.13
Spare parts :)14
View of the village with an excellent location and views to match.15
And its personal ID card :)16
We continue. The path takes us along a scenic ridge.17
Following the marker for Kožljek, an indistinct ridge peak.18
We have some forest paths, some cart tracks, and even asphalt is found.19
In these areas we encounter various thoughts that we didn't on the first part of the path.20
Samotorica with the church of Sv. Mihaela.21
We quickly go through the village and continue onwards.22
The second stage of the Polhograjska path is beautiful, full of beautiful views23
And we finally got there :)24
View from the top, which also has a logbook. Here we even meet some hikers25
Another part of the elongated Samotorica26
We descend deep into the valley and on the opposite side puff up to Butajnovo27
Good harvest will be, the church is already sprouting :)28
Mainly farms are home here, but there are also some new buildings29
Ostrich plantation, large birds that run better than fly :)30
Here however live diligent workers who are now on winter holidays :)31
From here onwards there are no markers, only a poorly trodden path32
It leads to viewless Klešča which even has a little box with registration book33
We cross the top and descend over meadows to the nearby road34
Past the hamlet of Setnik we descend into the valley35
Here the path to Mali vrh begins, which is small only by name36
The ascent is so long that we even have to rest a bit :)37
Descending towards Praproče. On the right is the church of St. Jurij38
First houses. To the left in the background is our next target, Polhograjska gora39
Praproče. This village also has many farms, some of them are very old40
At the end of the village is the junction for Lovrenc, another name for Polhograjska gora41
It climbs a steep road below the ridge towards Logar42
Chapel at Logarju43
Church of St. Lawrence on the top of Gore44
After a short break, we hurry into the valley. The day is already slipping away :)45
One more view of Polhov Gradec46
At Logarju. I can't imagine how they used to live here47
We descend on the opposite, steeper side48
Blagajev grad, which now houses a museum of post and telecommunications49
At the starting point. Due to the gloomy weather it is already almost dark50
GPS track. This time we covered 26 km and 1300 m of ascent51

Nice weather and spring-like February are responsible for the last and at the same time longest part of the Polhograjska trail. The sun rises a bit earlier this month and goes to bed later, so we counted on walking the loop in daylight. We didn't hurry particularly, especially because of the great ambience, nor did we rest much nasmeh.

We started where we finished last time, near Blagajev dvorac. We headed to the Polhograjska trail in the same direction as we descended in the second part. Sv. Lovrenc and Mali Vrh we skipped this time. Continuation is wonderful wandering through varied Polhograjci. Southern slopes we didn't know yet, so small hamlets attached to hillsides surprised us. Nice views guaranteed here, solitude too.

Trail well marked everywhere, for a few hours an excellent local guide accompanied us velik nasmeh. Little wanderer in form of golden retriever walked in front barking loudly before each junction. Otherwise completely quiet. If we missed a junction intentionally or not, he came for us and barked the right direction. Never seen anything like that nasmeh. Near Sivka we said goodbye and went our separate ways.

Soon Pasja ravan with weather radar on top, later Tošč. Only longer rest we had at Gonte. We always like to stop there, in my taste they have by far the best skutni zavitek nasmeh. Followed ascent to Grmada, then long descent to valley. It went via one variant of Polhograjska trail past Setnica to Mačkov graben, then by road to start. Here darkness finally caught us. More impressions in photo story...
We are early, still parking in the dark.1
We are already on the path. The morning offers a wonderful scarlet color.2
Everything is quiet, even the dogs don't feel like barking.3
It will be a nice day, but not really warm yet.4
The sun is slowly waking up, we continue towards Prapročam.5
The village is behind us, on the left Sv. Jurij greets us.6
We are heading towards the sun. We are still alone, no one around.7
One of the hamlets with the common name Setnik. We are going in that direction...8
Houses stand on sunny slopes, fields are in the valley.9
They have stood for a long time, countless stories have happened here.10
A little further there is a new hamlet. Such settlement is typical for these areas.11
There are quite a few farms, some more modern, others not.12
He, he ... it's already hot for him, not too much for us :)13
Hill after hill, village after village. Nice to see :)14
Follow some descents into the gully below Srednji vrh.15
Here we first encounter the signpost for Pasja ravan, where we are headed.16
We dig into the opposite slope and slowly regain the lost altitude.17
Our guide, he has been with us for a while. He barks at every junction, otherwise completely quiet :)18
Srednji vrh. This name also covers a wide area.19
Some two good kilometers further we turn sharply left towards Sivka20
These few houses also belong to Srednji vrh. Nice view, quite secluded.21
Junction of three roads and a slightly larger farm.22
We are still three :) Thinking about how to proceed with my new friend.23
At this house they know him well. Purebred village wanderer :) Farewell and we continue alone.24
The mountain trail to Sivko is closed due to foresters, the detour is right above these houses.25
First time here. The summit is spacious, the view reaches far.26
In the shelter of nearby trees there is a bench for rest and a logbook.27
The weather has also warmed up to a pleasant 11°C.28
Direction of continuation. Over there is Pasja ravan with the weather radar on top.29
Zadobje, again the same name for several hamlets.30
Just a little more and soon we'll be on the summit plateau.31
Pasja ravan, once the highest peak in the Polhograjsko hribovje.32
Towards Črni vrh...33
Interestingly painted welcome sign :)34
Almost like an airport runway :)35
I think there's no doubt about the career path of the owner of these toys :)36
The Polhograjska pot follows the left variant, so we turn in that direction.37
We are arriving in more familiar areas. Below is Selo pri Polhovem Gradcu.38
Turns right. First Tošč follows, then rest at Gonte.39
First we walk through Selo pri Polhovem Gradcu.40
At the chapel of Sv. Jedrt we turn left uphill.41
Follows almost two kilometers of ascent and we are already at the highest peak of the Polhograjci.42
Right, right … to Gonte. Hunger makes itself known, legs protest and demand rest :)43
And we have finally arrived. It is late and there are no longer many visitors.44
Inside we are surprisingly alone, on the menu however despite the late hour everything one could wish for.45
We do not linger much and soon continue towards Grmada.46
It has become a bit cloudy, and soon the day will depart.47
Still a commemorative photo on the top of Grmada …48
… and already rushing ahead. This time towards Setnica.49
Below us is the church of Sv. Ursula.50
Setnica, Polhograjska gora in the background.51
It will be tight, we still have a good half hour to the starting point.52
Left in the dark, arrived in the dark :)53
Walked path. Accumulated a solid 34 km and 1800 elevation gain.54

Nice to see and hear that the trail is maintained and well marked. nasmeh Over 10 years ago I walked/ran the entire trail in one go including Lovrencvelik nasmeh and had quite a few problems with "navigation" on the whole trail. In some sections markings were very sparse, intersections often unmarked at all.

@ A.D.K. ... There are dedicated signs for Polhograjska, but few, wooden and more motivational with various inscriptions nasmeh.

The entire route is well marked with classic markings and signposts, you just need to know where to turn. I've been using GPS for years, specific PPP is even marked on the free app Mapy.cz. Maybe this info helps someone, track can be obtained from me without problem too.
