I quite agree with popotnik.
Regarding GPS use here or on pzs.si/forum there is quite a lot written. I think the following facts are important
RASTER NAVIGATION
-if skilled in computer tech, then definitely something based on Windows Mobile or Symbian OS, where you can choose different programs for raster GPS orientation. I use (P1i, UIQ3) SmartComNavigator or QuickGPS program, with that I pre-prepare raster map with drawn path I will follow. Meanwhile the track is recorded, and for analysis I made a short program, so already on the path I know length, speed (ascent, descent),... Also super because I can take such track from others and analyze it,...
-if not skilled, then definitely suitable GPS devices like Garmin, where everything is already prepared, but it is as it is, in most cases nothing can be changed. I think on forums about each type much is written.
VECTOR NAVIGATION
I also have Garmin XT app installed, which for my taste is a navigation disaster, but has at the moment the best and most updated map of Slovenia and wider. Much better program for vector orientation is TomTom, but for Symbian devices it has outdated map, especially no mountain paths.
Decision not quite simple,..., when buying device inquire about
-updatability of base (map), possibility of adding own bases
-possibility of recording track, and later export/import
-possibility of adding/import/export of interest points (waypoints or POI)
Regardless of GPS, I still have that part of map where I move scanned/printed on A4/A5, with added data on huts, lengths, directions,… and such map I carry in pants pocket so always handy, large map in backpack.
"popotnik", if up for some exchange of experiences, tracks,..., send me private message.
