The road connection from the Soča Valley to the Kanal Valley is important not only today, but was also an important link in the past. Mountain passes under mighty mountains and paths over them enabled the flow of people. In that turbulent history various armies lingered in our regions, Napoleon's didn't bypass us either. Even more so, on one of his conquest campaigns in 1809 the French army marched towards Predel Pass. On May 18 that year a fierce battle erupted near the then kladara (fortress) between Austrians and Napoleon's soldiers. According to some accounts around 400 fell in three days of fierce fights. On the 200th anniversary a grand commemorative ceremony took place today in memory of the fallen at the mortally wounded lion on Predel.
