Rudni vrh (Sella Somdogna) & Rif. Grego

If you compare cycling ascents on so-called mountain roads from Dunja to Rudni vrh with Vršič or Mangart road, the first probably can't win in height and difficulty, but without doubt this road wins in length, picturesqueness, peace and relatively low traffic burden; also, you certainly won't experience pollution from car exhausts to such an extent as it happens from car-moto columns e.g. on Vršič or Predel.
Ascent Dogna – Sella Somdogna is over 18 km long, details on the fairly friendly slope, nice shady turns, bridges, tunnels, water along the path and steep parts – visible from attached pictures; generally the ascent isn't hard. Of course you have to get to the starting point in Dogna from somewhere (either from Pontebba direction or from Sella Nevea), so you need to organize beforehand.
From Rudni vrh saddle (end of asphalt) to Grego hut is another roughly 2 km more varied and steeper gravel-concrete surface; possible further loop challenges e.g. descent past Rif. Grego to Zajzera valley require already different bike types (at least good MTB, wide tires and full suspension) and more knowledge and technique. Currently this road from Zajzera (mule track) towards Grego hut is being renovated, so formally closed, but already the first section below the hut – which goes downhill along footpath for a while – requires significantly more experience and brake control over the wheel rims for really safe and enjoyable descent.
About further conditions on this road, probably someone will report; otherwise Rudni vrh saddle and Grego hut can already be nice destinations.

Nice route. This tour can be made circular without any hassle if you park in Ovča vas (Valbruna). Past Pontebba to Dunja it's all downhill the whole time and you barely warm up, that descent from Grego hut to Zajzera isn't anything special either if you don't complicate it.
I rode it with a regular rigid bike, those 400 m from the hut along the hiking path you walk next to the bike and then you're already in the forest on wide and flat cart track. Then just a couple km asphalt downhill to parking. Recommended
