Rž 2538m

Such a high mountain, but no word of it on the forum. Sadly it's in the wrong spot, so nobody visits it. If it were e.g. near Črna prst, it'd be a real hit, but since it's a bit off the main pilgrimages to daddy Triglav, few know about it.
On this enchanting day I came to visit it from Kredarica. It's less than 20 minutes away, I only needed my camera, as the path mostly goes along the ridge or the southern sunny side. But watch out. Don't step on the ice, or you'll be at Stanič's too quick!
Rž 2538m Right Rž, taken 19.12. this year from Kredarica. Today there was even less snow on the southern slope.1

Lijaneja, you rightly complained! I see that peaks near the giants are always neglected. And such good shots, they captivated me. Correct, this mountain also deserves its own thread title.

Ugh, I had no idea it was so easy to reach the summit. Last weekend I observed it from Kredarica summit, but somehow didn't get motivated to proceed towards it. Next time...

... From Stanič's hut towards Rž there are no signs, just need to cross the scree, of course if you know where. But the narrow ridge even in summer is full of fine sand, not for "risking". My sister and I rather skipped visiting this peak, even though we were soooo close...

From Stanič's hut there's also the upper, comfortable marked hiking path in summer towards Kredarica. It reaches the ridge west of the summit and mostly follows it towards Kredarica. From the marked path to the top of Rž it's no more than 10 minutes.

From Kot to Stanič's and on to Rž. Really don't know why the mountain isn't more visited. Apart from the steep scree, no major problems to get up. On the ridge even poles aren't in the way. Views in weather like today, super. And I even hopped to Visoka Vrbanova špica. The most tiring is walking on wet and smooth rocks around the little spring towards Debelem kamnu.

On picture 22 is Plesišče, capitalized, barely visible; the light platform under Spodnja Vrbanova špica. The green patch on Visoka Vrbanova špica could also be a dance floor.
Nice tour. Good luck.

Thanks Mrki, I've gone several times from Spodnja to Visoka, and always thought that was the dance floor.

On Wednesday afternoon on the way back from Triglav I visited Rž for the first time and agree with Tinky that the mountain deserves more visits and even a stamp. After all, it's a peak higher than e.g. Rjavina and Skuta. I came from Kredarica direction on the path to Stanič's hut, then turned right up to the summit. The path is quite crumbly and full of rocks, so caution on descent, I cut across the scree down, since I continued to Stanič and Visoka Vrbanova špica, then back over Prag to Vrata.

Yesterday from Krma to Malo polje and further along the hunting path to upper Krma, then over Apnenica past Dovška vratca. Where the path branches down to Stanič's hut I continued diagonally across the northern slopes of Rž to the transverse path to Kredarica and then steeply up off-path to the notch and on to Rž summit. From there back to the transverse path and to Kredarica.

The northern slope of Rž is largely covered with hard snow, with old icy steps, so I used crampons there, but on the ridge to the summit of course not needed and I took them off. On descent over hard gravel under the notch, half-covered with frozen snow, I also took the ice axe. The secured path to Kredarica on the north side of the ridge is only partially snowy in places (chains are visible), on southern slopes nowhere.

At Kredarica I was the only Slovene among visitors for a while. Just before me a group of Slavic-speaking hikers headed down to Krma valley, all but one carefully put on helmets before leaving. On descent, around 4 pm, about 200m below Kredarica I ran into four Hungarians asking if there's a shortcut to Aljažev dom where their car was. I explained no real shortcut here, have to go back to Kredarica then far down a not too easy path. But they weren't worried at all, calmly sat on the ground and cooked something on two stoves.

Kredarica provisioning is back in meteorologists' hands, so coffee is of course excellent again. Glowing larches and beautiful views all day in all directions celebrated autumn shining in all its beauty.
Hut (supposedly once a shepherd's), with the best view far and wide.1
Rarely visited Rž is actually a remarkable mountain!2
Rž is also among those Slovenian mountains that have their own window.3
Frozen snow on the northern slopes of Rž.4
Notch just before the summit: as if someone had sawed, broken, and piled up stone elements of dripstone structures.5
On the summit the eye naturally first rests on Očak.6
And the other giants of the Julians are worth a thorough viewing.7
Škrlatica with its entourage - as if at arm's reach.8
Rjavina, right both Pršivci to which the path leads through the distinct Kravja valley. Arrow indicates approx. location of the unfortunate bomber's remains (behind the ridge).9
The secured path to Kredarica is only partially snowy here and there.10
I spotted this bird when I looked from below Kredarica towards Rž. Probably not the first one, but I saw it for the first time.11
And this too: there is no stamp on the summit, but carefully stored among the pile of stones on the summit is the marker of the triangulation point.12

Yesterday, on Sunday, a few randonnée skiing enthusiasts randomly met in the neglected Kot valley. Dom Valentina Staniča is partially destroyed, as (probably) gale-force wind tore off part of the roof. Conditions for ascent solid, for skiing very good. Above 2200 m snow in gullies gives way under walkers (even deeply), partly frozen crust. At the top of Rž ridge a strong cold northerly was blowing. eekvelik nasmeh

Strange. A month and a half ago we informed the hut owner about the damage. If he hasn't done anything by now, the damage won't be negligibleeek

Sadly, repairing a destroyed roof on a hut above 2000 m isn't like in the valley. In my opinion, it'll take longer. Helicopter hour from 1500 EUR/h flight onwards plus TNP restrictions etc. I hope they manage to fix it ASAP, because with rain the damage and leaking surely only increases. But is the bivouac at Peter Skalar already repaired?

I'll send the photo again to PD Javornik Koroška Bela. Access in snow is difficult, but they could at least protect it a bit. There are also young hikers to whom snow causes no problems. Thanks anzecokl..

Hello.
We partially patched it, after May 15 we'll go up and replace it. Thanks for the info. Best, Olga (PD response)

From afar it looked like they tried to put some protection up there, but in such wind it all tears off... Probably a solid renovation of that roof part is needed to withstand the tremendous wind forces up there. Let's hope the damage isn't too great.
When I used the search to find Rž, it wasn't found in the conditions, so a new topic was created (obviously by mistake).

On Friday I used the last gasps of nice weather and drove to Kot. Ended up on Rž. The lower part of the tour was still concrete despite the late hour (noon) and I walked it with crampons and skis on my backpack; higher up super for skis and ice axe. The late hour helped on the descent when the sun at least a bit softened the northern slopes under Rjavina. The avalanche paths stayed icy and I avoided them. Back on solid ground in a good hour. Half an hour to the car.
