Every year I go to the mountains several times and notice that there are fewer and fewer signs and markings. At the end of June I was on Pokljuka and wanted to go on the circular trail described on the board. When looking for this trail I couldn't find it at all. Three foreigners joined me in the search who also wanted to go on this trail. We wandered for a while searching for signs and finally gave up without finding even part of the trail. Finally we decided to go to Blejska koča. After about five kilometers we reached a rest area with nicely arranged benches. There is also a board saying iron ore was once mined there. But nowhere is there a sign for Blejska koča. So we headed on the trail to the right and noticed a modest sign for Sport hotel. We came to a clearing, a pasture and headed to the house assuming someone lives there. We were very surprised when a woman stepped out of the "house" and chased us away asking what we're looking for there because everyone walking there disturbs her. Then we were running out of time for that day and headed back to Pokljuka without reaching Blejska koča. I describe the incident to warn that everyone goes on a trail for the first time once; that's why signs and markings are needed. I think caretakers and those delivering material to huts could sometimes take care of a sign. After all we who go to the mountains and visit huts don't go to harass them but leave them a euro too.

Trail markers work each in their own district for a daily wage payment around 13 e. If a path is not marked then something is wrong: lack of time, uninformed about this part, organization of the trail markers section responsible for this part, or the path is not in the register of hiking paths (there not marked). Some sections have lots of paths, few trail markers and can't renew all at once, you must also be aware that paths and path sections which are generally more dangerous have priority. Hikers, if you have the desire for this work, contact trail markers in your municipality, and they will be glad for your joining them, there you will be informed about the procedures for performing this work. Car, just curious how long you've been a trail marker. Lp

To your question how long I have been participating: 8 years, of which good 4 years without course (license). Don't misunderstand me, I am not among the most diligent either, there are other obligations too, but I try to participate in group actions which often take place on Saturday or Sunday since during the week there is no time for major repairs. The problem is also in the organization itself, that there are more of us but we are tied to jobs so sometimes two or three are enough since one alone can hardly work (except marking) because it is not only that work, there is a lot of other work which is sometimes tied to group work and it is sometimes hard to set the date for the action. I joined voluntarily without obligations but it is like that that one must show willingness to work not only at the beginning (so that they send you to the course to get the trail marker badge), then it all fades (main thing I have the badge) WRONG, this can last only one year, if you are not active anymore they don't extend it, because if you don't work the president can't submit the annual report on work actions and the work of each individual on which the extension depends, so one must make a little effort not to appear lazy. Thanks for the frank answers, CAR. The problems you mentioned I know, I myself am the leader of trail markers in PD. I wish you much success in work on mountain paths. Lp

CAR, thanks the same!!!! We'll turn around two more times and we'll mix the paints again. In our club we work without daily allowances and youth... Probably more or less the same elsewhere too.

Which color is the most durable for markings?

Markacists use ordinary tesarol paint; before the action in the evening I add a bit of nitro thinner, mix well and leave open overnight. The paint thickens a bit, so it's easier to work. We order the paint from the president and he procures it, since we all use the same paint. As for durability, yes, that's how it is: paint the marking 2x so it holds for a while and during the annual inspection renew those that are already bad as needed.

Does anyone know what those green triangles next to the markings are for?
